It was mentioned in the Clippers/Spurs game blog, but some of you may have missed seeing it. The Spurs' TV broadcast showed the beloved, Jimmy Chang on the sideline wearing a Spurs' sweatshirt. He was there with a 7'9" Chinese basketball player serving as his translator.

I wonder if Jimmy challenged Schoening to a game of 1 on 1, for old time sake.

Why was the basketball player serving as Chang's translator?

It's not everyday you can toss a little grammar smack at Solid D. :lol

Sun Ming Ming played for the Dodge City Legends in the USBL in the summer. He wasn't a key player.

Spurs' human victory cigars

San Antonio Express-News

Sure, Tim Duncan is a two-time MVP and perhaps the best player in the game. But when it comes to cult status, he can't match these guys — the Spurs’ human victory cigars. When these Spurs came in, you knew the fat lady had sung.

TOM COPA

Position: Center
Height: 6-foot-10
Years played: 1991-92 season
How they loved him: When the game turned to a rout, chants of “Copa! Copa! Copa!” could be heard from fans at HemisFair Arena. And when he entered — which he did only 33 times, averaging four minutes per game — the crowd would always go crazy.
What he said: “I learned a lot last year, watching all those games.” — Joking with media after the season

UWE BLAB

Position: Center
Height: 7-foot-1
Years played: 1989-90
How they loved him: Larry Brown, then the Spurs' coach, was a big Blab supporter: “Uwe's the best I've ever seen as a guy on the bench,” he said in 1990. Makes you wonder why he played Blab only seven games.
What he said: “Just call me a gunner.” — After scoring five points in 1990 to match David Robinson's output that night

MENGKE BATEER

Position: Center
Height: 6-foot-11
Years played: 2002-03
How they loved him: Although he fell victim to left patella tendinitis more than any human should, Bateer earned his teammates' respect for accepting his role. He played in only 12 games but left with an NBA championship ring.
What they said: “Four Down.” — When Gregg Popovich called for the play “Four Down,” Bateer's translator, Jimmy Chang, translated it. Into English.

ZARKO PASPALJ

Position: Forward
Height: 6-foot-9
Years played: 1989-90
How they loved him: Paspalj was famous for sitting in the smoking section of team flights. On the court, he avoided playing defense at all costs. But still, the loudest ovations were reserved for Paspalj, who played 28 games.
What he said: “Everyone says here, ‘For Zarko, America must be like a dream.' But I have a good life in Yugoslavia.” — during his one and only NBA season

ANDREW GAZE

Position: Guard
Height: 6-foot-6
Years played: 1999
How they loved him: He was a legend in Australia, but played only 19 games for the Spurs, who won their first title in 1999. Gaze didn't make the playoff roster but won over everybody with his friendly personality and work ethic.
What he said: “I have absolutely no regrets, just great memories.” — Talking about his experience after the season
