Host got the wrong Smith in the deal. Said JR Smith not Joe Smith. Difference is significant.

Pop hadn't heard details of the trade. Don filled him in. AI was leading the league in scoring prior to him asking for the trade. AI on perimeter plus Carmelo's inside scoring talents will be a plus.

Jeff asked Pop about the Isaiah Thomas incident in NY. Should the NBA have suspended Thomas. Pop said he didn't know how you can prove something on lip-synching (reading). Coaches shouldn't berate or say negative things to players during the game. Pop would personally hope the league would have a talk with Isaiah about his actions. If he was a betting man, he would bet that the NBA League office did have some sort of discussion with Isaiah about it.

Regarding reasons for starters being in the game late...Pop said sometimes there are long-term reasons for keeping starters in, like Manu needing to get in game shape again after an injury. Normally you aren't going to have starters in there late like that. On hard fouls, do coaches in the NBA give instructions to do so. Pop said they will tell their team to not allow easy baskets. Don't just commit a touch foul on the wrist. You want them to go after the ball and make sure they don't get the basket. It can be a hard foul but never with the intent to injure.

Caller asked about Finley and also if Pop calls every play for Beno when he comes in:

Fin cares so much and he's really hard on himself. We just try to ignore him and encourage him to shoot, even when he's not hitting.

On TP or Beno, Pop doesn't make every call. A lot of their offense is motion so they don't make calls in the flow all the time. Normally, it's after a stoppage of play or when the defense is set, then Pop will call a play.

Caller asked about why Iguodala got off on the Spurs and the 76ers played them so closely. Iguodala hit some shots in a row and he played very well. It happens very often in the NBA with that 24 sec. clock. You're never out of games in the NBA.

Pop was asked about Air Force Academy basketball. Pop said when he was playing there were only 7 people at the games and 2 of those were his roomates. :lol
Pop's buddy, Jeff Bzdelek is doing a great job there.

Gregg Popovich
http://www.atozwineworks.com/images/gregg.jpg (they actually used this picture!)
While best known for coaching the San Antonio Spurs to three NBA titles, Gregg Popovich enjoys a rich life away from basketball. Well-read, he was a professor at Pomona-Pitzer from 1979 to 1986, and is an authority on Soviet history. He has applied his thirst for knowledge equally to wine as a collector for over thirty years. Not only is Gregg an expert in the provenance of his collection but he also has a superb palate and is conversant with winemaking techniques. His eclectic 3,000 bottle above-ground cellar sits apart from the house as a retreat where he can as he puts it, "sip wine and work out x's and o's."
