NBA Finals to begin Sunday

June 2, 2004

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (Ticker) - Three years ago, Larry Brown went to the NBA Finals for the first time and the Los Angeles Lakers were standing in the way. The Hall of Fame coach is back again, this time with the Detroit Pistons, and again the Lakers will be the opponent.

Brown has four days to prepare before the Pistons visit the Lakers in the opener of the NBA Finals on Sunday.

But coming up with a plan to beat the Lakers will be quite a challenge for Brown, who was hired exactly a year ago to get the Pistons into the NBA Finals.

The Pistons closed out the Eastern Conference finals in six games with a 69-65 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday. As it has all season, Detroit did it with defense, allowing an average of just 72.7 points in the series.

The Pistons are going to need a spectacular defensive effort to contain the two Laker superstars - Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant.

When Brown coached the Philadelphia 76ers to the NBA Finals in 2001, they won the first game from the Lakers but proceeded to lose the next four. That was the second of three straight NBA titles for the Lakers.

"Everybody knows LA," said Pistons guard Lindsey Hunter, a former Laker. "Everybody knows the big fella (Shaquille O'Neal) is a handful. Nobody can really stop him, but we'll try to manufacture ways to make it difficult for him."

The first two games are at the Staples Center on Sunday and Tuesday before the series shifts to the Palace of Auburn Hills.

The Pistons are in the NBA Finals for the first time since winning the second of back-to-back titles in 1990. link (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylc=X3oDMTBpYTg2ZTBwBF9TAzk1ODYxOTQ4BHNlYwN0 bQ--?slug=nbaplayoffs&prov=st&type=lgns)
