Picker pines for accurate reflections
By TULSA WORLD PICKER
1/4/2007

First of all this week, we will review the top in-state sports stories for the year just ended, as voted by the media; then we'll vote.

The media speaks:

1. OU plans to sign 25 five-star football recruits.
2. Bob Stoops cuts a stroke off his golf handicap.
3. Sooners steamroll dogs on 2006 schedule.
4. Stoops dunks on his kids in backyard hoop game.
5. OU picked to win next two national titles by Sports Animal radio clowns.
6. No more rules violations found at OU.
7. Stoops not running for office.
8. OU coaches hope for raises despite off and on and back off season.
9. OU coordinators plan vacation homes.
10. Stoops considers a new visor.

Our top-story votes:

1. Pickens buries Oklahoma State in money.
2. Kelvin Sampson cheats, leaves OU basketball program in ruin.
3. Eddie Sutton retires.
4. OU backs into weak conference title.
5. TU gets lucky, keeps coach K.

Bowl notes

Name one great offense the current OU defensive administration has stopped.

It's hard to call a game the greatest ever if you lose, isn't it?

The Arkansas offense is all doink and dink and needs to become manly.

Texas A&M's offense is childish as well.

The Tennessee coach has perfected the John Cooper mode of retaining a job by winning just barely enough.

Nebraska is a reflection of its coach and has no personality.

Texas Tech has little upside left, having peaked out there on the moon.

Quarterback Colt McCoy will make Texas the favorite over OU as long he starts for the Longhorns.

The next time OU goes into a prevent defense, boos should be released.

Oregon really stinks.

Tulsa's offense took a big step backward, as the pass game became a scramble first attack.

Pat Summerall, age 111, was dusted off and did a terrific job announcing a bowl game.

Brent Musburger, usually good, was disgusting as he continually buttered-up USC.

Texas coach Mack Brown has not used runner Charles enough.

Adrian Peterson is no cinch in the pros.

Rutgers would paddle Boise State.

Michigan resembles OU of late, as it struggles to win a big one.

Kansas State belonged under a bowl, not in one.

Sports talk radio notes

Far and away the best analysis of the OU defensive collapse versus Boise State was provided by former Sooner quarterback Steve Davis on the Buzz, 1430.

Davis cut through all the baloney and said on fourth down, stop them.

Former Oklahoma State basketball coach is one of the few excellent voices on the Sports Animal.

Smart update

Last week we wrote that few in their right minds would venture into the wide world of insanity to try to coach the pro nuts.

Ex-Dolphin coach Saban is the most recent coach to run for his mental health.

Pro athletes are punks and spoiled brats, and only a recycled pro assistant who can't get a college job would want any part of that mess.

The Picks

Saturday

Chiefs at Indy (-6 1/2) The legend of Indy quarterback Poutin' Manning continues: Will his feet get so happy in the playoffs, he burrows himself into the ground?

Poutin' is even taking shots at his defense; but that's okay, they're not quick enough to catch him.

Chiefs won the lottery to get in, not the big one, something like a Pick 3.

KC quarterback Green is a bit of a mini-Manning -- no big win.

Indy by 7.

Dallas at Seattle (-3) Talk about a roller-coaster ride for quarterback Romo, Jessica Simpson to Carrie Underwood -- what's next, a complete reversal to focus on football?

Of late, Romo has resembled a cricket caught in the headlights.

Roy Williams is going to the Pro Bowl.

In uniform.

Unbelievable.

Seattle is all wet.

Dallas by 3.

Some absurd bowl, Cincinnati (-7) versus Western Michigan Heads.

Western Michigan by 4.

Sunday

Jets at New England (-9) Can't wait to see if the New England coach will dress up or dress down for the playoffs.

Standard regular season apparel was the layered look, a sweat shirt with the neck pulled down to the stomach.

Would make a good "Project Runway" puzzle next season.

Jets got in the playoffs when other contenders opted for golf.

New England by 13.

Giants at the Eagles (-6 1/2) The Giants got in on this tie-breaker: most fumbles recovered versus division foe in red zone.

They shouldn't cancel their winter holiday plans.

Eagles by 7.

Another silly bowl, Southern Mississippi (-6) versus Ohio Tails.

Southern Miss by 7.

Monday

Ohio State (-7 1/2) versus Florida So soon?

Fairly frankly, we've moved on to the NFL playoffs and college basketball.

College football the second week of January?

Who cares.

Nothing can top OU-Boise for thrills and spills.

Maybe after four or five or however many days remain until the game, we'll become more interested.

When last seen a couple of months ago, Florida was like a rich man's Boise State, full of tricks and turns, little substance.

Can't get too carried away about Michigan's thorny Rose performance.

But the underdogs have been the power in the bowls again this year.

Ohio State by 6.
