from the past couple days...
Gabriel Gonzaga gets a title shot with Tim Sylvia because Vera didn't re-sign in time...
and Matt Hughes vs Chris Lytle...trying to get Hughes back on the winning track obviously...
also Rich Franklin (#5 Middleweight)* vs. Jason MacDonald...we'll see how "for real" the "TUF Killer" is...
-Jon Fitch (#7 Welterweight)* vs. Luigi Fioravanti
-Karo Parisyan (#5 Welterweight)* vs. TBA
-Mike Swick vs. TBA
-Assuerio Silva vs. TBA
Always good to see Fitch, Swick, and Karo on a card. I'd like to see a better opponent for Fitch though...he's really under-rated and never gets any airtime!

What would make Mac "for real" in your opinion?

I like Mac. Someone made the comment that he is cocky with his comments about being a stepping stone. Well, he was just telling the truth. He doesn't have the fame of the TUF fighters, and I think his wins show the novice MMA fan that there are plenty of guys who haven't been on TUF who have just as much experience and talent.
That being said, he won't beat Rich. Mac obviously isn't a standup fighter, and Rich won't make the mistakes that Herman and Leben did on the ground.
Hughes vs Lytle will be a damn good match if it happens, and a big gut check for Matt. He will need to win convincingly, which I think he can, but Leben is no joke.

Yeah, to think that Mac has to beat Rich to be "for real" isn't realistic. Anything can happen but, to judge Rich by one fight & say Silva beat a nobody isn't realistic either.

A respectable showing against Franklin...
I like MacDonald (pulled for him against Leben and Herman) but I think he'll be thoroughly dominated...

Now cut it out you two. You were cohabitating peacefully for a couple of days.
Also, I don't think an MMA forum will need a mod if we stick to the general rules of Spurstalk. If we do get one, I'd just like to see us not make 2,000 threads about the same subject like they do on Sherdog (or the Spurs section of this forum). All UFC 68 related comments should go in the UFC 68 thread, and so on. But that's just my opinion.

Yep, there were rumors that Gonzaga was not a done deal and that Couture was being kicked around. Randy is walking around at about 230 lbs right now...
This is more intriguing than Gonzaga at least!!

I have no idea if Randy is ready to compete at the HW level. Probably not. It doesn't really make much sense from an MMA standpoint. There are guys like Vera, Cro-Cop, Gonzaga, and AA who are in line for a shot. It was supposed to be Vera, but they are having trouble getting him signed, I've heard.
But all of that really doesn't matter. Randy coming back to take on Sylvia will be a big draw, and that's what it's all about.

01-10-2007, 12:37 PM
Ah man, I don't know about this one. Do you guys think Randy can take Sylvia at this point? I hope he can but this seems like a tall order for the Natural, especially for a comeback fight.

I think this case is different. I think Randy is still a very legitimate fighter who would be a challenge for anyone who stepped in the octagon to face him. Ken was an old, trash talking, washed up joke. Everything around Ken was pure hype and no substance, in my opinion.

While I agree that Randy could still be great and pose some problems for Sylvia, I see the outcome as being the same - the old champ lying bruised and bleeding on the mat after an ego-destroying loss. It's more of an emotional response than intellectual; I've always admired Couture and seeing him lose a few steps the last year or two before retiring was difficult, but to watch him attempt a comeback (for a title shot, no less) that promises a bad ending doesn't appeal to me. Perhaps I should compare it to Matt Hughes/Royce Gracie instead...
IX_Equilibrium
01-12-2007, 09:42 AM
Perhaps that will be the outcome. But I'm thinking the old man has something up his sleeve. Anyway, Sylvia impressed me on the ground with Monson, and I know his reach poses a big problem for Randy. I would love to know what his gameplan and strategy will be.
LEONARD
01-12-2007, 09:46 AM
After Vera fell thru, they really didn't have a choice to have a decent draw for a Sylvia fight. I'm sure Dana can't wait for Crocop to smash Sylvia so he'll have a HW star...

Undercard Bouts Added to UFC 68By Thomas Gerbasi
A mix of seasoned veterans, up and coming prospects, and Octagon newcomers will comprise the undercard of UFC 68: The Uprising, which will take place at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, March 3rd.
In the main event, Tim Sylvia defends his UFC Heavyweight title against former two-time champion Randy Couture. Also featured will be the returns of former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin (who takes on Jason MacDonald) and former UFC Welterweight king Matt Hughes (who will battle Chris Lytle).
Rounding out the pay-per-view portion of the card will be an intriguing light heavyweight matchup between Jason Lambert and former world title challenger Renato ‘Babalu’ Sobral and a middleweight clash between 185-pound bangers Martin Kampmann and Drew McFedries.
In preliminary contests, welterweight contenders Jon Fitch and Luigi Fioravanti square off, TUF3 light heavyweight Matt Hamill takes on former national wrestling champion and UFC debutant Rex Holman, and lightweights Jason Dent and Jamie Varner look to move up the 155-pound ladder when they face off in bouts against Gleison Tibau and Jason Gilliam, respectively.
Fitch/Fioravanti ought to be a decent fight.
LEONARD
02-09-2007, 12:08 PM
I was onboard the Hamill bandwagon prior to his fight with Petruzelli, but he was a DIRTY mofo in that fight. Rubbing his fingers and elbows in cuts and basically doing nothing but lay on Seth. Terrible fight...he needs a lot of work...and he probably needs a loss...
Fitch is probably the best fighter in the UFC that most don't know...poor guy just can't get on live!!
