While O'Bryant was trying to get the feel for it, another NBA castaway from this season was feeling it, and perhaps demonstrating that there really is a difference in the talent of the two leagues. James White, who started the year with San Antonio, scored 23 points for the Toros, with a variety of shots and strong moves to the basket -- 16 in the first half during which time the Toros, supposedly the worst team in the D-League, made the Jam look foolish while building a 19-point lead.

wow, White quickly becomming one of the top scoreres of the D-league is quite good news.
one question: why can't someone like him, who could jump out of the building, not get more rebounds? bad timing? bad positioning? afraid of contact?

I hope he starts rebounding more, but it sounds like Austin overwhelmed Bakersfield in the first half, although only won by 2. I wonder if that was more of a fast-paced game.

Hopefully the boards will pick up but it looks like white is being aggressive since he got to the free throw line 12 times and made 9. I also hope his defense is adequete enough for the spurs concept.

One of his strengths apparently is defense. Good effort, lateral mobility, etc. Bowen doesn't rebound much, either, but White seems to be a better scorer. The 9/12 from the line is a bit under his capabilities, too.

if we are calling on him to be a rebounder we are in deep shit....i'm not saying he's going to be called on to be a scorer, he's gonna pretty much play bowens role, and his role is to defend not go after rebounds, that is tims and and whoever the hell is playing center for us job.....

After a completely awful MLK showcase, White had a pretty good game against the Tulsa 66ers. I had to leave midway through the third, but he was forcing things much less on offense and even led the team with four assists. Did a good job guarding Alan Anderson when the game was still in question and was effective when he was switched onto Will Conroy or doubling a big man. He only got 2 boards, but the Toros have been killing their opponents on the boards lately, so it didn't make mush difference.
Conroy was solid but clearly frustrated with his crappy big men. Mike Hall was the only worthwhile big they have; he's a tweener with a good outside shot and (usually) decent rebounding.
BJ Elder scored over 20 in the first half for the second game in a row, ending with 32. A little short for the NBA and plays no defense, he could make bank in Europe.
Jamar Smith was put in the starting lineup again and had a good all-around game with 23 points, 8 boards and 2 blocks.
Loren Woods got another double-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks, but damn he is so soft on offense he makes Rasho look good. The one time he did try to dunk, Frans "Franken" Steyn simultaneously found his aggressive side and fouled him hard.

Another good performance by White tonight. 16 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Some nice D as he's starting to draw different perimeter assignments depending on which teammates are with him on the floor. Seems like the Toro guards trade off big rebounding nights, and the team continues to dominate on the boards. The whole team was moving the ball extremely well in the first half and got out to a 21 point lead. White got most of his assists from penetrating and kicking. Tulsa coach Joey Meyer made some great adjustments at halftime and forced alot of turnovers with fullcourt presses and constant harassment of the Toro ballhandlers, and the game was tied the end of three. White and Jamar Smith combined to get the lead quickly back to 7, and they Toros never gave it up again thatks to some timely putbacks and hustle play from a previously quiet BJ Elder.
The Toros only had eight players suit up tonight. Kris Clack and Brad Buckman were in street clothes and Scott Merritt was nowhere to be seen for the second game in a row.
Frans Steyn had a cheering section of like 20 people in red and yellow T-shirts wih his name and number on them, including Ty Detmer of all people. :wtf

Disciplinary reasons it seems.Yeah, he might be pissed about lack of playing time lately, but his play has been pretty poor lately. I talked to the team president for a little while during the game but he claimed to know nothing about it. He did mention that there has been alot of player movement lately and a trade could be possible. If that happens I hope they would be getting another big man in return, since Loren could be called up at any time. Of course Merritt could just be waived if Jeff Hagen has healed up.

The paper says nine in the first seven minutes. I'm sure it's right; it was just a result of the impressive ball movement and alot of standing around by the 66ers.

ChumpDumper, are there going to be anymore Toros games on NBATV? White looked horrible in the two games I saw ... horrible to the point that the NBDL looked like it was too high of a level for him.
Good to hear he's doing better. However, BJ Elder isn't anything close to an NBA player and he seems to be outplaying White most nights. Have you seen a game this year where White is far and away the best player on the court?
ChumpDumper
01-21-2007, 03:55 AM
There should be more Toro games on at some point since they're showing two a week, but the schedule isn't really shown until the week of the games.
As for his being the best on the floor, tonight was probably the night he was closest to being far and away the best. It looked like he was going to take over the game in the fourth just as it looked in the beginning of the game, but he just seemed to trail off a bit and allowed the more steady performers like Bell and Smith to come ot the fore again. The thing about White is he looks like he's going to require a ton of structure to maximize his obvious talents. He's on a team that hasn't set a decent pick all year, one that is going to make more creative one-one-one scorers like Elder look better on most nights. The ball movement in the first quarter was the best I had seen all year, but I'm tempted to chalk it up to the 66ers being completely unprepared to compete until their coach bitched them out at halftime. It just seems like White needs to be taught how to dominate and needs to find a couple of go-to plays like Duncan's four-down or Parker's coming off a high pick to help him on his way.

BTW, Scott Merritt was traded to Tulsa for Cheyne Gadson. On its face, it's a win-win trade since the Toros still need another reliable ballhandler and all the 66er big men except Mike Hall are pretty worthless. The only problem is that each team will be completely screwed if the players most likely to be called up are actually called up. I shudder to think of Tulsa playing without Will Conroy or Austin playing without Loren Woods now; each team gave up their only real potential replacements.

Interesting game today. 11AM start and one of the biggest crowds in Toros history: announced crowd of 2574, 2500 of whom were schoolkids. Nice field trip, that was almost spoiled by, of all people, the Toros mascot.
The Toros beat the second place team in the Western Conference, the Colorado 14ers, battling back from several 14er runs in the first three quarters to win 101-98. Each team got alot of second chance points from the 17 and 20 offensive rebounds the Toros and 14ers respectively grabbed.
White had a pretty solid game:
37:20 min
17 pts
7-15 fg
1-4 3pt
2-4 ft
2 off reb
4 tot reb
4 ast
0 pf
4 stl
1 to
1 blk
He seemed to be more comfortable today and more willing to use his athleticism to his advantage on offense and defense, and he was pretty active on the boards. Even if it didn't necessarily show in his totals, he was much more in the mix than in other games. He still needs to do some things like either follow his 3 pointers or get back on D, not just stand there, but it was a good game for him.
Newcomer Cheyne Gadson ran the point better than anyone else had for Austin this season, racking up 8 points, 6 assists and 0 turnovers in 28 minutes off the bench. He allowed Troy Bell to play off the ball for awhile where he is most effective. Justin Bowen provided a huge spark off the bench, pouring in 11 points in just over 6 minutes, shooting a perfect 5 for 5.
Loren Woods was literally and figuratively huge for Austin again with 12 points, 14 rebounds (7 offensive), 2 blocks and several clutch free throws in the closing minutes (6-7 from the line). He also made the final Toro basket in a fastbreak that put them up by 4 and launched a rather bizarre ending. Loren was mugging for a local TV station camera he had just landed in front of and everyone was apparently assuming the 14ers were going to call a time out if time had in fact not already run out--everyone including the Toros mascot, "Da Bull," who in celebration had jumped up and was hanging on the rim the 14ers were driving toward after a quick inbounds. Coaches yelled, whistles blew, refs conferred and fans and players stood dumbfounded as the 14ers shot a technical free throw and received the ball to inbound in the frontcourt with 0.42 seconds on the clock. Fortunately, the Toros defended the inbounds better the second time and Rick Rickertt didn't get to play Derek Fisher and the Toros got away with the well-deserved win.
For the 14ers, Elton Brown continued his play as the one of the best post scorers left in the D-League, finishing with 22 points on 10-17 shooting and 10 rebounds, 5 offensive. Pooh Jeter had a bad game. Often out of control and turnover prone, he didn't play much in the second half.
Colorado has some nice undersized PFs in Mike Harris and Louis Amundson. Harris led all rebounders with 15 (9 offensive) off the bench, but he's got his work cut out for him to get into the show being only 6'6", if that. Amundson, however, is just slightly undersized and has an impressive standing vertical leap that causes alot to happen in terms of rebounding (9 boards, 4 offensive) and altering/blocking shots (credited with one block but definitely had at least one more). His offense is crap outside of three feet, but NBA teams looking for energy off the bench should take a look at this guy.
We didn't want to sit in the stands with the screaming kids, so we took advantage of a 2-1 sale and bought courtside seats. Later in the game, it was announced our ticket stubs could be presented at a future game for free seats, so we're getting four courtside seats for the price of one. Bonus.
PS: I still love Da Bull. Don't beat yourself up dude; just listen for the whistle.

Actually the kids were better behaved than I expected, just shrieking loud. Glad I had some earplugs on me. They did kind of rush about when free shit was being thrown into the crowd, but the worst I can say they did was they cheered for the wrong team the first three baskets or so. On the whole they were better behaved than the kids brought by their parents every other game -- those little shits run up and down the stands all game long.

One of the biggest gripes about his game has been his reluctance to use his athleticism to his advantage. Once he begins to use it in the half-court set, he will be ready to be an NBA player.

I can see him as a rotation guy in the NBA. I've been happy with his progress. Whether he ever plays for the Spurs is another issue. I could see them draft a Marcus Dove, who is a more physical defensive force, or find their SF in the draft otherwise. He's a decent prospect for a package.

White didn't do much of anything tonight because 1) He didn't have to. Jamar Smith and BJ Elder got the Toros off to a healthy lead against the hapless Rimrockers they never gave up, so Coach Dennis Johnson played his bench and guys coming off injuries for most of the game. 2) White spent alot of time bitching and baiting the refs which earned him a technical in the third. Johnson kept him in the game and let him take out his frustrations on the Arkansas team until taking him out for good. He got to the line a few times, and White played pretty decent defense on Roger Powell, but tonight was all academic against the new worst team in the D-League. His constant complaining was annoying though.
