Forget about the movie (which only followed the novel by name alone), read it for the social commentary.

Shadows Of Forgotten Ancestors by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan
Good book if you can find it.

The Gift Of Valor by Michael M. Phillips
Regardless of your views on the current administration or the war in Iraq, you will not put this book down untouched.

In Search of Captain Zero: A Surfer's Road Trip Beyond the End of the Road by Allan Weisbecker
First person account of a former drug smuggler going to Central America to find his old partner
