Nets' Kidd accuses wife of abusing their children

Hackensack, N.J. _ Jason Kidd, who for years has blown kisses to his wife before each free throw, filed a domestic-violence complaint Monday accusing her of mistreating their children.

"It has been painful for Jason Kidd to watch the effect of his wife's behavior on their children," said Madeline Marzano-Lesnevich, a Hackensack lawyer representing the New Jersey Nets point guard.

Lesnevich would not comment further or discuss the details of the complaint, filed Monday in the domestic violence division of state Superior Court in Hackensack.

Police in Saddle River — where Kidd lives with his wife, Joumana, and their three children in the Burning Hollow section — said they haven't received any recent complaints or written any reports on any domestic-related matters from the home.

This is the second time Kidd, 33, and his wife have become entangled in a domestic violence dispute.

While playing in Phoenix for the NBA's Suns, the 6-foot-4 Kidd was arrested in January 2001 after his wife called police and reported that he had hit her during an argument over their son, Trey Jason (T.J.), who was 2 years old at the time.

Kidd later pleaded guilty to spousal abuse and was fined $200. He was also ordered to take anger management counseling. His record later was expunged.

He returned to the court after missing several games and apologized to fans, who booed him every time he touched the ball and chanted "wife-beater" at him as his team lost to the Celtics in Boston.

After Kidd joined the Nets and moved with his family to Saddle River, the Kidds told reporters that Jason was a transformed man and their relationship was thriving.

Jason and Joumana Kidd have been married for 10 years and have three children — T.J. and twins Miah and Jazelle.

Wow.

That's pretty horrible. It's extremely unusual for someone to file something like this against a spouse when the couple is still married. Usually I read about this kind of stuff when couples are separated. They are still together, right?

Kidd's wife wanting to stay in the world's biggest media market as a news reporter (or whatever it is she does) is what sealed the deal in Kidd not coming to SA in 2003, which is why we'll have a Tony and Manu backcourt for years to come. I say we hang her jailhouse uniform from the rafters.

I think it was determined he didn't beat her. If I remember correctly, he threw french fries at her or something like that.

Yeah, actually she criticized him for stealing some of the kid's fries, so he spat a half-chewed fry in her face then smacked her.... in front of the two-year old.

He deserves whatever he got. After getting traded that summer he blamed the Suns organization for the "stress" that caused him to snap. he then called Phoenix a one-horse town and upon his return, flipped off fans at the arena, cursed out one-time teammates, coaches, execs and media and then, to top it all off, he was nearly slapped with a fine by the NBA for openly discussing Shawn Marion's status with the Suns, stating that he and Marion were great friends and he'd enjoy playing with him again in Jersey once Marion's current contract was up, which happens to be a big no-no in the NBA.

BTW, the "beat your wife" chants weren't in Phoenix. They were from Boston in the playoffs that year as a Net. I shoud know. I was at the first game back, in my homemade Kidd jersey, none the less.

A white "wifebeater" with a big "5" painted on the front and "Baby" replacing "Kidd" on the back.

Still, this is sad.

Thanks for explanation. I had remembered about the fries, but thought the smacking her was denied (or unfounded).

Whatever the case is, it really sucks that she's (allegedly) abusing her children now. And extremely weird that they are still together if he's filing something like this.

:lol about wearing the wifebeater.

I don't think I have it any longer, but yeah, it was a piece of trash, which ironically is what Kidd is :D

It got the wanted laughs.

I just read the NY Post article too. It makes sense if they are separated. You don't file charges like this and then continue to live together.

Good luck and prayers to their children.

SADDLE RIVER, N.J. (AP) --New Jersey Nets star Jason Kidd filed for divorce from his wife of 10 years on Tuesday, accusing her of "extreme cruelty" throughout their marriage, according to court records obtained by The Associated Press.

In the dissolution papers, filed in state Superior Court in Bergen County, Kidd accuses Joumana Kidd of physically and mentally abusing him, threatening to make false domestic violence complaints against him to police, and of interfering with his relationship with his children.

"The defendant's extreme and unwarranted jealousy and rage has left the plaintiff concerned about her emotional stability," the papers said.

The divorce filing came less than a day after the 33-year-old NBA player filed a domestic violence complaint seeking a temporary restraining order against his wife.

"Jason Kidd filed for divorce from his wife today on the grounds of extreme cruelty over a long period of time," said Kidd's attorney, Madeline Marzano-Lesnevich, in a statement Tuesday. "As this is an extremely difficult personal matter, I ask that the privacy of the Kidd family be respected."

The Kidds, who live in Saddle River, were involved in a domestic violence matter six years ago when he was playing for the Phoenix Suns.

In that incident, Jason Kidd was arrested in January 2001 after his wife told police he hit her during an argument over their son, Trey Jason (T.J.), who was 2 at the time. Kidd pleaded guilty to spousal abuse, was fined $200 and ordered to take anger management training.

Besides 8-year-old T.J., the Kidds have 4-year-old twin daughters, Miah and Jazelle.

Kidd, who is among the top 10 earning players in the NBA, will make more than $18 million this season.

The Kidds' home phone number is unlisted. An after-hours message left for Joumana Kidd's lawyer, Gary Newman of Roseland, was not immediately returned.

According to the complaint, Joumana Kidd used the couple's 8-year-old son on Dec. 27 to sneak into the Nets locker room and rummage through Jason Kidd's locker to find his cell phone. After looking up the names and numbers on it, the complaint said she left her son behind as she went upstairs to take a front row seat, where she shouted insults at Kidd throughout the game.

The papers accuse Joumana Kidd of kicking, hitting, punching and throwing household objects at her husband as she became "increasingly controlling and manipulative" in the last few years of their union.

According to Kidd, his wife had tracking devices installed on his cars and computers and has harassed his trainer, friends and family.

Bitch is crazy.

KIDD CRIES FOUL ON HIS WIFE
By FRED KERBER, JEANE MacINTOSH and KATE SHEEHY

January 9, 2007 -- Hoops superstar Jason Kidd's troubled marriage to his former Budweiser-model wife has hit the skids again, sources told The Post yesterday.

Joumana Kidd, 34, has been furious over the New Jersey Net great's frequent nights out in New York City, the sources said.

"It's a mess, and it's been going on for a while," one source close to the All-Star point guard said of the pair's latest marital discord.

The hoopster plans to counter his wife's claims with a domestic-violence complaint and restraining order against her, the source said.

It was unclear what the complaint involved.

The seven-time NBA All-Star reportedly headed straight from practice yesterday to the Bergen County Courthouse to launch his offensive against his sexy wife, a beer-ad model-turned- celebrity journalist.

The couple has three children.

Two police cars remained parked outside the family's home in tony Saddle River, N.J., last night, as tight-lipped officers spent more than two hours inside.

Cops refused to discuss the reputed complaint and restraining order, citing privacy issues. Some domestic complaints - unlike criminal incidents - are not a matter of public record.

The Kidds' crisis came after about a year of increasing tensions between them, sources said.

One of the final straws for Jason Kidd likely came after his wife showed up at a Net game at the Meadowlands taunting him from the sidelines while flailing about with a cellphone in her hands, several sources said.

Joumana's alleged courtside antics are only one of "numerous" recent rocky incidents between the pair, one source added, saying, "He [Kidd] has been mentally tortured for months."

Joumana could not be reached for comment last night.

Her sister-in-law, Jennifer Samaha, appeared shocked when told by The Post that Kidd - once busted for domestic violence after allegedly punching Joumana in the mouth over a french fry - was taking a turn as victim.

"It's just ridiculous," she said.

Kidd, too, could not be reached for comment yesterday.

One of his lawyers had no immediate comment, and his agent did not return a phone call. The Nets' team policy is not to discuss private matters involving players.

The couple had still been living together until about a month ago, trying to work things through, sources said.

But after a particularly bitter dust-up, Joumana angrily threw her hubby - and his clothes - out, sources said.

Last night, a woman left the home, hopped into a white Porsche and waited for the police to escort her from the property. Officers said Kidd was not at home.

Kidd - who has a $99 million, six-year contract with the Nets - had been busted on the misdemeanor assault against his wife in January 2001, while playing for the Phoenix Suns.

The assault charge was eventually dropped after Kidd agreed to pay a $200 fine and attend anger-management classes for six months.

Days after the incident, his wife said, "Jason and I have had some turbulence in our relationship of late, and what happened the other night was good in a sense, because it's brought us a lot closer together."
