Citing NFL sources, the Newark Star-Ledger reported that Parcells informed the Giants through an intermediary that he would be interested in replacing retiring GM Ernie Accorsi.

The newspaper said its sources were two NFL executives and a player. According to the paper, the sources requested anonymity because of the private nature of the search.

Parcells coached the Giants to Super Bowl victories after the 1986 and 1990 seasons.

Parcells, who turns 66 before the start of next season, has one year left on his contract with the Cowboys, but he is unsure he wants to fulfill the deal. LARRY BROWN ALL OVER AGAIN) He reportedly has until Feb. 1 to inform owner Jerry Jones of his plans.

Parcells has a 34-31 regular-season record with the Cowboys. He is 0-2 in the playoffs with Dallas, including Saturday’s stomach-wrenching 21-20 loss to Seattle in a wild-card playoff game.

Jones has said he wants Parcells to return as coach.

“I’m going to take a look at things, take a look at what we need to do and see where we go,” Parcells said after the loss to the Seahawks.

The Cowboys, who were viewed as Super Bowl contenders in early December, lost when quarterback Tony Romo botched the hold of a chip-shot field goal attempt with 1:19 left.

If Parcells returns to Dallas, he could be searching for a new defensive coordinator.

The Atlanta Falcons have requested permission to talk to interview Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer about the vacancy on new coach Bobby Petrino’s staff, an Atlanta newspaper reported in today’s editions.

Zimmer does not have a contract with the Cowboys after this season. He’s been the team’s defensive coordinator since February 2000.

Petrino plans to use the 4-3 defense, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Zimmer has a history of success coaching that scheme. Critics believe his unfamiliarity with coaching the 3-4 scheme, which the Cowboys use, is one of the biggest reasons why the unit struggled this season.
