He just did something to his knee making a dunk down the lane after the whistle had blown. It looks bad and they had to carry him off the court.
He was the prize late-season pickup of my fantasy team, too.

Thats wrong! You never want to see anyone injured. As a Suns fan you know how devasting a injury can be. It was just a young player who is getting alot more minutes now.

Come on getting injured "playing" the game is one thing but hurting YOURSELF cause you were SHOW-BOATING in another. Like that stupid kicker that hurt himself celebrating or that QB that headbutted the stand after a TD. I was laughing so hard when they showed it...was in tears lol.

Teaches all those young guys a lesson, I hope to stop when the whistle is blown. He hurt his knee because he was stretching back to see how he missed the dunk and landed awkwardly.
So stupid, but he went to Ok. State, so I don't expect much from him.

Yep, think what made it so funny was that dude couldnt believe he missed the dunk...so for that split second he is in shock looking back at the rim to see what happened. Then as he comes down his knee buckles....ooooppps lol

"This is just terrible," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "When he came down, you could see his heel jam into the ground and I reacted right away because I could see it, I could feel it"
Rivers said Allen's injury is probably an ACL tear, but the MRI results won't be available until Thursday.

Sorry for the loss guys, sucks for fantasy teams all around the NBA world...
Last year Francisco Garcia was injured after jumping up to help the ref unstick the ball from between the rim and backboard. Garcia came down on Brad Miller's foot (who was just standing there, lol) and was injured for almost the entire 2nd half of the season.
The look on Miller's face was priceless: "Why the $*%& did you do THAT?"

No, the whistle blew a full 2.5 seconds before he even took off... he was definitely trying to give the home fans a little something to watch since he would be untouched on his way to the hoop... the collective "awww" from the crowd was at the miss, not his fall - that is, until it was obvious he wasn't going to get up...
I wouldn't call it "showboating" but it definitely wasn't "completing the play"

No word on the Celtic website.
He was just coming back from right knee injury:
http://www.nba.com/celtics/news/notes/notes010907-allen.html
Ballas, their own worst enemies. One would think one long knee injury would instill some reflexive caution against silly, unnecessary moves.
Dunking well after the whistle IS show-boating. Cool dunks are about the only thing "positive" about the Celtics.

Holy crap, I saw it this morning. Poor guy :lol
And I wouldn't call it showboating, I doubt he was even thinking of the fans when he did it. He just wanted to dunk the ball like how many other players lay the ball in or dunk after a foul or timeout.
In hindsight it seems dumb, but 99% of the time a player does this he doesn't injure himself and no one complains.

Allen Out For Season With Two Torn Ligaments
(AP) BOSTON Celtics guard Tony Allen is out for the season with two torn ligaments in his left knee.
Coach Doc Rivers says Allen will be out of action for at least six months, maybe longer.
Allen was taken to New England Baptist Hospital after injuring his left knee in the final three minutes of the third quarter last night against Indiana.
Allen went up for a free dunk, and landed awkwardly on his knee. He spent minutes writhing in pain until teammates carried him off the court.
Allen is the latest name added to a long list of Celtics players on the bench.
Forward Wally Szczerbiak is out for at least a week because of recurring ankle injuries, while guard Delonte West remains day-to-day with a sore back.
Theo Ratliff is out for the season with a back injury and Paul Pierce has been out since December 20th with a stress reaction in his left foot.

Uh ... you do watch Amare Stoudemire play basketball, don't you? How many times has he done what Tony Allen did over the years? Pre-injury, he'd dunk after almost every whistle. Not to mention Nash shooting all the time after the whistle. If Nash shot after the whistle and came down and broke his ankle, I don't think you'd be laughing.

And once again, its not like going up for a dunk with no one there is a dangerous situation. Had this happend during a pregame shootaround, would people have belivied his dunking was unessecary and showboating?

Damn. He is in 2 of my fantasy teams. I have 1 team at NBA UFC with Chris Paul in my line-up. I dropped the injured Brevin Knight for Tony Allen. Nice pickup for some weeks, until this. Freaking injury season in this league.
What's weird is that you care for players if you're playing fantasy basketball. And neither do I laugh at injury situations such as these.
-------------------
BOSTON (AP) -- Boston Celtics guard Tony Allen will miss the rest of the season with two torn ligaments in his left knee.
Coach Doc Rivers said Thursday that Allen, a first-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State in 2004, will be out at least six months. Allen hurt the knee when he landed awkwardly after an uncontested dunk in the final minutes of a 97-84 loss to Indiana on Wednesday.

Bad year for Boston teams. The Red Sox and the Celtics couldn't avoid the injury bug. It was a bit of showboating, I must admit. But you never know, sometimes they do give you and1s. I remember one time Parker had the ball and was curling off a screen and there was a foul down low. Parker hesitated, then shot it/made it, and got a 3 point play.
Freak accidents do happen. Gabe Kapler got injured running the bases on someone else's home run for example.

I wasn't laughing - I was saying that it wasn't "finishing the play" though... I don't really like it when any NBA players do that after the whistle is blown and my coach used to make me run every time I'd shoot after he blew a whistle in practice. This should just serve as a lesson that you shouldn't run down the lane for an unecessary dunk when you're fouled at the 3 pt line. When Amare does this kind of stuff - he's generally already under/around the hoop, so his greatest potential injury is to the ankle.

"If Nash shot after the whistle and came down and broke his ankle,"
first of all, I don't like any plays after the ball is dead. Nor am I glad anybody's hurt.
An uncontested, low-energy Nash jumpshot is not that risky.
After the whistle, driving 20 ft down the lane, jumping 4 ft in the air, dunking, then hanging on the rim (increases the risk), when you've already had one knee operation, is just fucking playground stupid. No matter what anybody thinks about it, he doesn't deserve it, but he did this to himself.
