Jan. 11, 2007

The Big 12 and Pacific-10 Conferences have announced an agreement to play a four-year men's basketball series of 12 annual games between the two leagues, starting with the 2007-08 season.

"This series of games with the Pac-10 will showcase some of the best college basketball in the country," Big 12 Commissioner Kevin Weiberg said. "Our two conferences annually produce highly rated teams and multiple NCAA Tournament teams. This series will provide quality match-ups that will help to build the strength of our teams' non-conference schedules. We are excited to have the opportunity to do this with the Pac-10 in a way that allows all of our teams to participate."

The series will continue in 2008, with games slated for December 4-7. The contests scheduled will be return games of the matchups from 2007, but may not be scheduled for the same day of the week. The games in the series in 2009 will be played December 3-6, 2009, while matchups in 2010 will be played December 2-5, 2010.

"We are pleased to make this scheduling arrangement with the Big 12 Conference and its members," Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen noted. "It will enable both conferences to provide exciting, high-level basketball competition. The games will spotlight college basketball in early December and will be excellent programming for our television partners. I commend the coaches of the two conferences for embracing the competition which will enhance the power ratings of all participants."

Additional components of the series, including the name of the event, television and sponsorship will be announced at a later date.

I swear that I was thinking that these 2 conferences should do this soon. I always like the ACC-Big 10 challenge and I was thing that the Big 12 and Pac 10 should do it too....this is too weird. :smokin

I like A&M's draw....Arizona is a well known respected team, and they will give the Aggies a great test. This will help them get ready for conference play as well.

Texas v. UCLA. As long as we don't get beat 66-3 it'll be good.

It'll be interesting to see Arizona next year. No Shakur, no Radenovic and likely no Williams. That's three of their five top-scorers. They'll still have McClellan and Budinger, but with no veteran point, nor consistant pivot, it won't a savvy team. They'll be bringing in two 5-Star wings (Bayless/Horne), so the talent will be there.

Should be very interesting.

Texas at UCLA
I'm surprised on this one. I would have thought KU vs UCLA. All time historic powerhouses playing one another. I can see the point in this though from the market standpoint.

I like it. More conferences should do that.

An ACC-SEC challenge would be fun, better IMO than the current ACC-Big 10 challenge.

The B12 and SEC were trying for the last 3 years to get a deal set, but couldn't agree to the money specifics (thanks mainly to the SEC clown in charge of that conference).

This is a nice fall back deal. I'm a little bummed about not getting a rematch with UCLA for A&M, but playing Lute and Arizona will be a great one as well. Road trip here I come :hat

Keep in mind this is a 4-yr challenge...next year will likely be the same matchups but switch the venue, but then a whole new set of opponents I'm guessing afterwards.

usually not...they have new opponent every year. So Arizona will not be at A&M....at least that is the way the ACC does it. Each team gets 2 home and 2 away.....

Nope. It will be same opponents in 08 as it is in 07. They will just change who is home and who is away. New opponents will be scheduled for the 2009 and 2010 series.

I've been waiting for an Arizona State-A&M matchup in SOMETHING since I started at A&M in 2002 moving from Phoenix. There have been 3 years where the Holiday Bowl has predicted this matchup, but everytime it's gotten screwed up in some way. Now, we'll for sure have such a matchup in b-ball at some point, hopefully when Sendek is in full-swing at ASU so it will be a good challenge for both teams. I'll still be cheering for A&M, though... and definitely want them to beat U of A-holes next year.

My ex-roommate was a huge ASU homer and closet homosexual, so I was also hoping for that matchup. I've never heard anyone suck Ike Diagu's balls as much as he did. Kinda sucks that the aggies have to play another premier non-conference game on the road, but at least they're getting to play the bigtime programs now, while also having a chance to win.

My ex-roommate was also a big Spurs homer and was actually fellating S-Jax when he fired those shots in the air this summer - they had to make up that story about being hit by a car when they got caught.
