Damn that summed it up perfectly in a sentence. I think I can lock this thread now.

They are good because they made improvements to get better. Like anybody who gets better in life they see their weaknesses and fix them and thats what Dallas did. Cubes saw that every year his team was getting their assess whooped by playing run and gun and suddenly realized that he had to change the style of play for the team. He saw how sucessful the spurs were and thus got AJ and then brought in a true center in Dampier and the rest is history.

Mark Cuban, Dirk, Josh Howard, do I have to go on? :rolleyes

Of all of those things, I think the single most significant factor in making the Mavericks what they are is that coach. Under the previous administration, a largely similar group of players were some distance from ever being this good. AJ demanded change in the core values of the organization and when that change took root, that team became truly formidable.

Without AJ, is Dallas a playoff team? I could make a case for no.

They were w/o him, so I don't see why not.

But it's obviously AJ as to why Dallas is a top tier team in the league. Along with Dirk, the Mavs X-factor Josh Howard, and improved defense.

That could be a reasonable argument. When did Dallas make the finals with a pile of mashed potatoes playing Center?

No because they wouldn't know what defense is if he wasn't coaching them.

Why do the Suns make it every year then?

I didn't say anything about them not being a playoff team, but as far as them being a championship contender, it's only because Avery taught them defense.

What gave it away? The fact that "DALLAS MAVERICKS" is his "TEAM" in his little side profile?

They would be tops in the East without AJ though, definetly.

Suns do play defense - they just run at a faster pace than everyone else so they give up more points.

In 1985, the Los Angeles Lakers won 62 games, scoring 111 PPG and giving up 104 PPG. They also won the championship that year.

This year, the Suns are on pace to win 62 games, scoring 111 PPG and giving up 103 PPG. The playoffs haven't happened yet.

It wasn't until the 90's that teams discovered defense. Weight lifting was probably a big part of the improvement in that area. A lot of those 80's players weren't that strong.

use some logic, dipwad. while the Lakers gave up 104 ppg, was that the 5th worst scoring defense in the league? i strongly doubt it, considering it was very normal for almost all teams in the league to score 100+ points every night. nowadays, most games are in the mid to high 90's.

Dallas is so good because they got an all-star coming off the bench.

Laugh all you want but I really do believe other then hiring AJ as the coach that getting Dampier and Diop were huge for the mavs. Before they got those two guys they had no centers just 6'8-6'9 guys playing out of position at the center spot along with stick figure Bradley. I think the spurs would easily take out the Mavs in 4-5 games if the Mavs didn't have those 2 guys. They make huge difference when it comes to getting rebounds and playing interior defense. Sure they aren't world beaters but without them I think the Mavs would fall apart. Right now those 2 are better thenw hat the spurs have at center.

What ya talkin' bout? I can put up 20 on any given night. That's why I'm always looking for my shot when I come into the game. Forget Dirk and who else. I can do it myself.

Because Mark Cuban cried and whined so much when the Pistons and Spurs were winning titles by playing tough in-your-face defense. All the whining helped get the league to change the rules to make it more appealing to the sheep (fans) who do not like to watch defensive teams. Now that the rules are in their favor, the Mavs are better.

Dirk showed why Dallas is good tonight. I know it's en vogue for fans of other teams to call him soft... but the man rolled his ankle tonight and got back on the court with basically one leg and carried this team on his back to a win in overtime.

If you call that soft you've got perception issues.

So WHO was it that sent the Mavs into overtime? Dirk is a small black guy now? I thought it was someone else, sorry.

So with your logic it matters what every other team is doing rather than the team itself... so if a team averaged 140 PPG and gave up 110PPG you'd say they suck because they'd be dead last in points allowed per game.. and it wouldn't be close... yet that team would beat the **** out of every team on the schedule. Horrible logic.

What you really need to look at is the differential... that's the best indicator.... guess who is ahead of the Mavs in that category?

Actually, it was the sixth worst in the league... they also led the league in scoring that year...

I think it proves my previous point that fast break basketball and good shooting isn't a "new fad" - it's traditional basketball... the 90s are what ruined the game.
