The Detroit Pistons are close to reaching an agreement with free agent Chris Webber, sources close to the negotiations said Thursday night.

Webber, 33, who had the final two seasons of his contract bought out by the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday, will return to his Michigan roots where he once starred for Detroit Country Day High School and the University of Michigan.

Webber, who's still clearing waivers, can't officially with a team until Monday. He is expected to sign for a pro-rated $1.87 million-a-season, 10-year-veteran contract.

All along, sources said, the Pistons were Webber's No. 1 choice upon leaving the 76ers. They would give him a chance to finally reach the NBA Finals and perhaps compete for his first NBA title.

Yep, Nazr or Dice are gone if this is the case. If one of them gets moved (along with Flip Murray) for a backup PG, it will be well worth it already.

Not completely convinced Chris Webber would make the Pistons all that much better. But, it would be a low risk move, so it's probably worth it if he wants to join Detroit.

I think he'd be a better fit for the Lakers, actually.

It's not a done deal quite yet...The Lakers can offer him some serious minutes due to Kwame and Odom being out. Once Odom comes back, Chris can play the 5 in the triangle...

More like have a chance to win a championship. The Lakers aren't winning one anytime soon.

Just take Flip Murray along with Dice and don't give us anything in return, and it's a deal. :downspin:

Just what the Pistons need is another jumpshooting big man.

If Webber and Iverson couldn't make it work in Philly, what makes anyone think that Kobe and Webber can make it work in LA?

Hmm... not too idiotic when you consider that both guys need the offense to go through them in order to be successful. I just don't think it would work out as well as you think.

The big difference is that Shaq is a legitimate low post threat. Webber was only decent in this regard before his knees gave out on him.

I may be wrong, but didn't Michigan have to forfeit all their wins from the Chris Webber era?

Why #84? I know 4 is retired but 84?

He was going to pick 44, but his nephew had a dream that he was wearing a #84 Pistons jersey, so Webb decided to pick the number his nephew dreamed he wore.
