OSU Athletics: Fund is near $252 million
By BILL HAISTEN World Sports Writer
1/12/2007

STILLWATER -- Through its first year of existence, the Oklahoma State University athletic facilities fund generated about $50 million, athletic director Mike Holder reported on Thursday.

From a starting point of $202 million in January 2006, the OSU fund grew by 25.87 percent. By the end of December, the fund total stood at about $252 million.

The fund was created when Boone Pickens gave $165 million to the university. The money was designated for the completion of the Boone Pickens Stadi um renovation and the construction of the Athletic Village. Added to the $165 million was a $6 million donation Pickens already had made, along with $31 million that had been held in an OSU Cowboy Golf Inc. fund.

The money is managed and invested by Pickens' company, BP Capital Management of Dallas.

The fund grew to $266 million during the first six months of 2006, but falling oil prices were the primary factor in an uneven second half of the year. Accord ing to figures provided by Holder, the fund lost $26.6 million in July, gained $13.3 million in August, gained $9.8 million in November and lost $9 million in December.

For OSU, Holder said, Pickens last year waived $14 million in management fees.

"That's real money," Holder said. "Boone has his team working hard for us every day. He treats us just like he does his other clients, and he's not being compensated for it."

RPI doesn't really accurately reflect anything until March.

Props to OSU though, $260 million can buy you a lot of 30 point losses on national TV.

we're nearing some kind of major break between the 'wealthy' schools and everybody else. long term, i'm not even sure okie lite can spend with UT, A&M, OU, & UNL.

...of course they can't. besides their program is irrelevant.

I agree on the spending situation. Would really like to see some kind of cap put on all this shit.

Virginia just spent 140 million on a new basketball arena. Mizzou spent 90 mil on theirs. And that's not even getting into what's going on in college football.

People bitch about the cost of pro stadiums (NFL and NBA), they need to take a look at what the major college fb programs are pumping into their facilities these days.

It's ridiculous - and it's all to attract a few "blue chippers" who will stay for 2 years max and then suck it up in the pros. No way punk-ass high schoolers who have 3 kids and can't pass the SAT should be forcing schools to spend $140 million on money that could go to... hmmm, I don't know... education, just to get them to sign on the dotted line.

Thankfully, A&M tradition won't ever allow too much to be done to Kyle Field, and Reed Arena was already built 10 years ago when prices were reasonable, so they can pump all their money into cheaper practice and weight training facilities.

Pretty soon, schools like A&M-Corpus should just turn themselves into D-League teams and make it the minor leagues for all the illiterate basketball players out there.

Oklahoma State: 48
Texas: 39
Texas A&M: 2 (Women's Softball - woohoo)
Kansas State: 0

Yes, I know this does not count football, as even the NCAA recognises they have no meaningful way of assuring a true champ in football.

Oh and that's why there hasn't been talk for years about bowling in the open end of Kyle?

closing the open end, is not doing 'too' much to Kyle Field...imo.

well, we were the first school in the big 12 to win 3 conference championships in 3 major sports (as determined by the conference) in the same school year. so we had that going for us, which was nice...

That's why I said they would never allow "too much" to be done to Kyle Field. They need to start winning something in football before they can justify that increase in seats and cost of construction. Secondly, it would make it hot as hell in there, so they better schedule every game 6:00 p.m. or later, or I'll never go again.

Oh, I see, you are the only one that can be funny in the face of a bad situation. Again with the 13-year old, I'm always right mentality. You and black mamba should get along well.

Cool. But wasn't your main argument about johngateswhitley's comment saying that OSU's program being irrelevant? Point is, if softball apparently isn't that great, the same argument can be made for cross country, golf, and wrestling...which doesn't give OSU that many more championships over K-State and A&M as far as major sports.

OSU has more Final Fours OR College World Series appearances than either have combined Championships.
