Do you also wonder why Cops train them and work with them?

It is getting too easy.
I don't get it. I am not criticizing the dogs. I am criticizing the owners mostly.
I've never seen or heard of a department working with a pitbull. Not around here.

I had heard of Pits being used in rescue search teams and as therapy dogs, but I had just recently stumbled upon this.

about 5 years ago, I came home from work one day and saw our neighbor's pit bull sittting in our backyard, just looking at me through the sliding glass door.
I looked around for our dog, a 32-lb blue heeler, but did not see him anywhere. Walked around to the side yard (by way of the front yard) and saw our dog laying in the grass. Walked up to him, he was still alive but barely breathing, was looking at me but could not move except for his eyes...
his throat was bitten and he lost a lot of blood. He died about 10 minutes after I got home.
Went back in the house, called the cops and said "our neighbor's pit bull is in our yard and killed our dog". Cops got there quick, as I figured they would.
Cops called animal control, they picked up the dog, and it was put to sleep.
When the cop was talking to me he told me I should have shot the dog.
These neighbors are the definition of "bad neighbors". they hate us and we hate them, even before this happened.
Our replacement dog that we got almost a year ago is a great dane puppy. He just turned 1 year old and is probably over 110 lbs. He's a big baby.
I would have killed that dog with my bare hands. I am not kidding.

I love dogs. Always have. Story time.
I come from a family of hunters. We all carry pocket knives. We all own guns. My grandpa used to raise dogs when my father was a child (hunting purposes). My grandfather was a drunk, mean prick to the day he died. Putting dogs down was common practice in those days. Dogs lose their taste for blood at some point (the hunt) and become useless in that respect. You either adopt them into retirement, or aim low on their last hunt. Common practice.
When I was young, my family taught you how to disassemble, clean, reassemble, load and shoot firearms the moment you were old enough to pick it up. When it was hunting season (deer, squirrel, rabit, etc), all the children were rounded up and taught the proper mechanics, methods, commands and firearm responsibilities you would employ from the moment you left the house, to your return with the kill.
Im giving you a frame of reference for the next story. My father hated dogs because his father used to make him clean the pens, feed them, etc. Obviously a very shitty job.
When I was a child, my friends and I were riding our bikes like any other day thru a large subdivision. There was always this great dane that would go nuts every time ANYTHING came by its space. The "fence" that restricted it was no restriction at all. It was a wood plank fence about 2 ft high, yet the dog never left its yard, no matter how crazy it got.
Well, that was until there was a girl riding with us that day. She was menstruating (confirmed later by her parents when my dad asked, I probably didnt know what that was at the time). We rode by the dog just like an other day, it was going to crazy like any other day, only this time it jumped the fence and was heading full steam for us.
Immediately upon closing the distance, it went for her. We were going pretty fast on our bikes (we accelerated when we seen it jump, but that was very delayed, it was full speed by the time we realized) and it knocked her clean off her bike without breaking stride. It was mauling her on the ground and trying to...well, not something I want to describe.
There 4 of us, 3 guys and her. We obviously turned around to try and get the dog off, which obviously pissed it off a great deal. We were children, not men. This dog was fucking insane. My brother grabbed its hips and started pulling, it immediately turned and bit down and started to swing him around like a rag doll. I grabbed my brother and started to pull him away, the dog got disinterested and went back for the girl. The other kid found a very round, very sturdy branch and started to beat the dog as hard as he could, which obviously pissed it off even more. This a great dane, very hardy, very big. Little kid, big branch = not enough damage to discourage its attack.
This whole thing has only been going on for maybe 2 minutes but its obvious there is alot screaming, so it attracts attention. Adults come running out of their houses to help, etc. It two grown men with shovels to fight that dog off her.
The dog finally stopped and ran back to its yard. The girl was in bad shape. Unconscious and covered in blood. Facial lacerations, arms, back, legs...everywhere. One of the women who seen it was a nurse and started to immediately treat her. No offense, I was a little shooken up by the whole experience, so what transpired next is sort of a blur.
I remeber the owner of the dog was a crotchety old fucker. He was obviously told his dog attacked a little girl. He didnt come out of the house, he was yelling thru the window about how it was her fault, she did something to it, those kids always taunt him, bla bla bla.
The nurse put her in her car and took her to the hospital. We boys went to my house. We told my father about the what happened. He was pissed. He told us to get in the van. We filed in. He drove to the scene, parked his car in the street, reached in glove compartment for his .38 revolver, walked calmly to the back yard of the house where the dog lives, seen the dog barking at the doorwall from inside the house, opened the doorwall, dog leapt out at him into the yard, he manuvered away, aimed, fired, fired again, dog down, walked closer put the gun point blank to its head and fired again.
Dogs owner comes out, looks at my father, looks at the dog, pauses, looks at my father and looks like he says something real animated, my father very clamly responds, owner goes back in the house.
My dad jumps in the truck and we pull away. I knew what was going down as soon as we got in the truck, I ask him what the owner said, he didnt answer. I ask him what he said back. No answer. That was the end of that.
Later I asked him in private what the exchange was. He said the owner was babbling about police, arrest, murder, etc. My father looked him square in the eye and reminded him he still had 3 shots left. The owner went inside. No cops. No arrest. No more dog.
The girl was in the hospital for a week. She had lost alot of blood and needed to be monitored in case she slipped. Lots of stitches, lots of plastic surgery. She came out totally fine and save for a few scars, she looked as normal as she did. Her family and her went to every persons house involved in the incident and thanked them personally for their involvement. I remember her father having tears in his eyes when he talked to my brother (he got some stitches, not big deal really). Her mother made a point to extend her gratitude to my father for his involvement as well and afterword kissed him on his bald head. I think my dad was a little embarassed.

Pit Bulls aren't worth a kid's life.
There are tons of stories like this that don't make the papers.
Some friends of mine in high school had to kill a stray one that latched onto a neighbor's dog and wouldn't let go.
The pit didn't release his grip until he died. It's amazing how many shovel whacks it takes to kill a pit bull.
I'd never own one. I've known a lot of folks that have them and love them, but they can be nutz.

Still wouldn't be enough. I guarantee a pissed off pit bull could kill you unless you happened to have a gun. But most pits are nice anyway, so you don't have to worry about that.
You know in England they used to have a competition between a muzzled bullmastiff and a man armed with a blunt weapon like a pipe. Since the bullmastiff was bred to track down poachers, the object was for the man to get a head start and see if he could escape from the dog by any means necesarry. No one ever claimed the prize money.
I hate to burst your bubble, but unless your superman then I think you are mistaken.

And that people with low self esteem, (wimps that could not punch their way out of a paper bag) poorly educated, folks that can't go out in public with out having the badest dog on the planet, or the biggest gun in their glove box....Folks that are on a 1st name basis with the local bail bondsman.....Well, Those people tend to own pit-bulls.... :wakeup

Pit Bulls suck. They are somewhat popular in Brazil as a security measure, which is understandable. A buddy of mine who has a tennis court in the back of his house let's his pit bull roam the grounds when he's out of town. He has a huge wall around his house and big metal door to enter with your car. If you ring your doorbell and wait for an answer, you're liable to have a heart attack within a dozen or so seconds. The damn dog will quietly sprint to the big metal door then leap and slam his body into it, making a loud, scary noise, then start barking. I think I'll rob a different house. :lol

DENVER -- The city of Denver will be allowed to enforce its 15-year ban on pit bulls.
A state law passed last year prohibits cities and counties from singling out certain kinds of dogs, so the city of Denver sued.
A judge in Denver's District Court on Thursday upheld Denver's law, saying that the state Attorney General's Office failed to provide any new scientific evidence in the field of animal behavior or other new information that would make Denver's ordinance unconstitutional.
The same judge had also ruled in December that "home rule" gives Denver the right to ban specific breeds of dogs, despite the state law.
The city said it will start enforcing the pit bull ban on May 9. Pit bull owners have 30 days to remove their dogs from the city, officials said.
Denver banned pit bulls after the Rev. Wilbur Billingsley was attacked by a pit bull in 1989. He was bitten 70 times and both of his legs were broken.
The city sued the state in May 2004 after Gov. Bill Owens signed a state law making owners liable for injuries the first time a dog bites. The bill, which also prohibited cities and counties from outlawing specific breeds, followed the fatal mauling of an Elbert County woman by three pit bulls last year.
The Denver pit bull law prohibits any person from owning, possessing, keeping, exercising control over, maintaining, harboring, or selling a pit bull in the city and county of Denver. The city defines a pit bull as any dog that is an American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, or any dog displaying the majority of physical traits of any one or more of these breeds. Copies of these three official breed standards are available at the Denver Municipal Animal Shelter at 678 South Jason St. in Denver. Call (303) 698-0076 for more information.

Dog chews four fingers off boy
By AP Wire Service
10/16/2003
The partially paralyzed boy didn't feel the chow-pit mix biting him.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- A 6-year-old boy who is partially paralyzed had four fingers chewed off by his family's dog because he couldn't feel the animal gnawing at his hand.
Dontavius Bryant suffered partial paralysis on his left side when he was the victim of a hit-and-run crash a year ago, police said. That is why he did not feel the dog chewing off his fingers to his second knuckle while he slept, police said.
He was in good condition at Tampa Children's Hospital on Wednesday.
Dontavius's 10-year-old brother, who shares a bed with him, found blood on the bed when he awoke sometime between 5 and 5:30 a.m. Monday.
"My brother told me to look at my hand," said Dontavius, sitting in a wheelchair Tuesday afternoon at the hospital with his left hand wrapped in white gauze. "I looked at it, and it was bleeding."
Animal control officials destroyed the 5 1/2 week-old puppy, a mixed breed of chow and pit bull named Chaka. Dontavius and his two older brothers had received the puppy as a gift two to three weeks ago, family friend Diona Thomas said.
"I believe the dog didn't know what he was doing," Thomas said. "He was friendly. Everybody loved him."
Dontavius, who still has use of his right hand, is taking his latest injury in stride. "I'll be OK. I can still play video games with one hand," he said.

My brothers pit bull is a wuss with anyone, she may run at you and scare the shit out of you but she only has one thing on her mine, PLAY. She will bark at you from the gate but jump over and your a playmate to her.
She's only been really aggressive one time, that's when my brother and his girlfriend were walking her and putting her back in the yard and some Rottweiler had been following them but she didn't even bark at the dog. While in the back yard the Rott jump over the side fence which is low and headed toward my brothers girlfriend. Sage (dog' name) goes nuts and chases that Rott all over the yard Rott is scared shitless until my brother opens the gate and hold Sage back.

love and adequate amount of food & water = most loyal dog you can own
neglect and malnutrition = evil baby killer
The choice is with the owner so try OWNING one before judging from just watching the news. Seriously, do you think any other dog attack not being a pitbull will make the news? It's obviously a hot topic so it's always going to be the hot story to report on. I trust my 2 pitbulls around my 2 yr old niece more than any other breed so.

I have a family member with two HUGE male pitbulls. He and his wife have a 3mo. old daughter. Everyone in the family has told him countless times to get rid of the dogs. He refuses and says the dogs are sweet since he raised them correctly.
I have a BAD feeling this is not going to end well. :cry
Did the daughter died?

I think most knowledgable people agree that the problem is bad owners, not hte dogs themselves.
Not always. Sometimes the dog gets triggered by something and never had attacked before.

Some jackasses fail to understand that. Untill you own one or have been around a few then you just dont understand.
If you have been around them then you understand they were bred with unique physical capabilities as well.
Those are walking bear traps that may be the sweetest animals in the world. If they go wrong vs. a mut going wrong....
Its not their fault they have those capabilities v. a mut.
But that does not mean the unique physical aspects of that neck and jaw structure dont exist.

Thank goodness I'm not a dog person or an animal person in general tbh. But I don't advocate for animal cruelty, I just don't believe in owning them. Animals don't belong in houses or zoos, they belong in the wild. I do agree with keeping some animals of endangered species in captivity at a limited level, but for the most part animals belong in the wild.

This. Any dog can be raised by a shit owner. The problem is their physical power. And there’s a greater chance they’ll do severe damage than a smaller dog. And that can be said of any larger breed. But it seems like there’s a larger % of bad pit owners than other dog owners. Where I live, it’s by far the most common breed that gets dumped and left to roam freely.

Where do you live? I’ve seen the same thing here recently. They’re killing all the coyotes and roaming poodle herds.

Go to the pound and have a look around. The vast majority of dogs there are Pit mixes. They're one of the most mistreated, neglected, and discarded breed of dogs. It's not any mystery why they are statistically more likely to attack their owners.

it's a pity, no pun intended, but most are abused by their owners and discarded. I love pits and I can acknowledge that environment can lead to issues with them but I can also acknowledge as much as I like pits they are just a more volatile breed.
I've never been around an unruly pit though. The ones I've been around have been big babies.

A lot of idiots use them as an accessory to go with their little hood persona. So yeah, pits definitely have worse dog owners than any other breed.
With that said, their bite force and the fact that they were bred to fight till the death makes them inherently more dangerous than any other dog. I have a pit mix and even though I have full confidence in him when I'm around I make sure he doesn't approach anybody else because I can understand why someone else would be intimidated. I also don't leave him unsupervised with our smaller dogs and wouldn't leave him with a small child of mine. People that have blind confidence in them are idiots. There's a story of two pits killing a 2 yr old and 6 month old despite 8 years of ownership with no prior incidents of aggression.

While I had strong feelings about the breed when she got him as a puppy, my grown daughter has a Pit. He's just a big teddy bear that wants nothing but to hang out with you on the couch though. I've never seen him react in any strong way to strangers or other dogs, he's relaxed and doesn't bark hardly at all. She's responsible though and keeps him on a leash when walking him. I like the fact the she has him now being that she lives on her own. People are less likely to fuck with her when she's walking a big Pit.

My pit was the same way. Such a patient, protective family dog. He just passed away unexpectedly of cancer. He was even the "lifeguard" during pool time with the kids, he was super smart. These idiots from SA that allowed their piece of shit weaponized dogs to escape deserve what they're gonna get. Hope the judge throws them a super harsh punishment.

No one here believes you have a chick, Joey. Makes good fiction though. Is she a 10 with perfect jugs and a tight pussy and she loves sucking your cock? Does she tell you how huge you are all the time?
