You must always beware of any movie released in January. I remember seeing the trailer for Smokin' Aces last summer, so it is quite obvious that the distribution company has little to no faith in its box office potential, which is why it has been on the shelf until now. January is the month when all the movies that the studios think are "so-so" get released. I know that "Alpha Dog" has been on the shelf for well over a year before they just put it out. There is less risk in putting them out in January, when movie attendance dips, than putting them out in the summer or over the holidays. That is not to say it won't be a good movie, but the studios lack of faith has to weigh a little on if I will go out and see it.

Meh, I'd rather judge based off of word of mouth rather than reviews. I've seen more than a fair share of movies that didn't get the greatest of reviews that turned out to be pretty solid, so i'll wait to catch it myself and base my opinion on my first hand judgement.

Big reasons to watch, but i'd have to add the hot dames and good scripting to my list of other reasons to watch. Piven as Ari is perfect though.

The Sopranos and Entourage, two of HBO's star sitcoms, are making a comeback. The former, a seminal mob drama that became a cultural phenomenon of sorts and won HBO an Emmy Award in 2004, will return on April 8 to begin its final nine episodes, written by David Chase.
The latter, a multiple time Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner, will also come back the same night with 20 episodes. These decisions were announced by HBO chairman and chief executive Chris Albrecht to the Television Critics Association on Friday.

I saw this movie tonight for the first time (I know a year later) and many hours after seeing it, I still don't know how I feel about it.
Im not one for the amount of blood it displayed.
I don't know how realistic it is for the gun the woman used a few blocks away to blow an FBI agent halfway across a room.
Honestly, it had alot of promise.
The ending was, 3:10 to Yuma esque.
crappy.
I give it 2 1/2 stars. A dissapointing movie.
Jeremy Piven though, can act. I really respect the guy's acting ability. Hopefully he can do a serious role soon. His role as Aces at points was serious, and was done very well. Common is also an underrated actor I felt.

It's a shame he isn't in something more "oscar" worthy.
Those roles look good, but it would be great if he could get recognized with an oscar.
Hasn't he won numerous emmys as well for his role as Ari Gold?
Eric,
If you are looking for a Mos Def album, I would suggest the Black Star album. Mos Def and Talib Kweli really rip shit up, one of my favorite hip-hop albums.

It is definitely a rental, but if you look at it as a black comedy, it does have some amusing parts. I liked that bathroom scene where the old lady draws the bath for the critically wounded guy and has her ADD grandson fucking with the guy---not to mention her own dildo laying on the soap holder.

And Smokin' Aces has it's moments, but the thing is so insane and all over the place that I could never get into it. It could never decide if it was a comedy, a Tarantino-wannabe, a shoot em up John Woo-wannabe, or a serious cop drama. I loved "Narc" so I was really looking forward to Smokin Aces, and was really really disappointed.
But hey, they're already makin a Smokin Aces 2. score.

Mos Def had a good, serious role in "The Woodsman", although the movie was so-so.
Funny that TPark mentioned how shitty the ending for Smoking Aces was while earlier in the thread people were anticipating the Sopranos, which had probably the shittiest ending of all time.

Alfred Blalock (1899-1964), a cardiologist (therefore, self-confident to the point of arrogance), leaves Vanderbilt for Johns Hopkins taking with him his lab technician, Vivien Thomas (1910-1985). Thomas, an African-American without a college degree, is a gifted mechanic and tool-maker with hands splendidly adept at surgery. In 1941, Blalock and Thomas take on the challenge of blue babies and invent bypass surgery. After trials on dogs, their first patient is baby Eileen, sure to die without the surgery. In defiance of custom and Jim Crow, Blalock brings Thomas into the surgery to advise him, but when Life Magazine and kudos come, Thomas is excluded. Will he receive his due?

Yeah, it reminded me of that Keira Knightly movie, "Domino."
When I read the synopsis of "Smokin' Aces," I thought it would be a can't miss.
