Can you guys help me compile a list of NBA players (current or notable past players) that are from San Antonio?

Either born here, played high school ball here, or whatever.

Thanks.

Who?

Robert Reid went to St. Mary's Univ. in SA and played 11-12 years in the NBA. He was the starting 3 for the Rockets for many years and played a key role in the Rockets' first trip to the NBA Finals. He scored over 10,000 points in his career.

Artie Griffin went to Lee, and was Texas all time leading scorer for a long time, dont know if that record still stand, but he played on the Spurs pre season teams for a couple of years, although he never made the final squad

Fennis Dembo went to Fox Tech HS. He was on the cover of SI, a pre-season All-American at Wyoming and played 1 year with the Detroit Pistons. He got a ring as a member of that NBA Championship team.

Yeah, Shaq was born in NJ but his step-father was transferred to Ft. Sam Houston (Army brat). Cole HS is at Ft. Sam.

I'd forgotten he actually played a few games in Minnesota. His dad is former 76er Walli Jones. Didn't "Ski" set a record for 3-pointers at K-State during a post season tourney?

I believe he did.

Jones is the third-leading scorer in Kansas State history. His scoring prowess was demonstrated on March 24, 1994, when he scored 62 points against Fresno State University in the 1994 NIT Quarterfinals, the second-highest postseason scoring total in college basketball history. The 14 three-point field goals scored by Jones in that game are also a postseason record.

Jones is currently playing professionally in Venezuela.

That Jay team that Bo Outlaw was on (1988 I believe) had another player named Calvin Thomas that was also about 6-9 with hops. I have no idea what happened to that guy. Jay's frontline that season was like 6-9, 6-9, and 6-7.

You are correct....I had the misfortune of playing a pickup game at Taft High School one summer against Bo and Calvin Thomas. I made them both look very good! :lol

Gilbert Salinas graduated HS in 1977 from Burbank (I think), then went to Notre Dame where he was a backup to Bill Laimbeer and Orlando Wooldridge, then was drafted by the Hawks in the 8th round in 1981 but never played a regular season game.

That group of Shaq, Bo Outlaw, Calvin Thomas, and Ski Jones were the guts of a San Antonio AAU squad that won a Junior Olympics tournament here in the summer of '89. For a local team, that was a pretty formidable bunch, and not just because of Shaq.

He went to Cole High School
I remember going to see him in an highschool All-Star game at Trinity U. One of the highlights was Shaq leading a fast break down court, dribbling behind his back on the run and going in for a dunk.

He was much thinner then. :lol

I worked at the country club where Shaq/Cole had their senior prom. That seems like so long ago...and yeah, he was super-skinny. :spin
