Who do you believe it is? Growing up in a household with a couple of potheads and alcoholics, I've always known Janis Joplin to be the best female rock singer.
Opinions? Thoughts? Comments?

Janis Joplin is a good pick. Would also give high marks to Patty Smith and Chrissie Hynde. Maybe Karen O, for the new generation.

You're gay. That singer in heart was fine and rocked at the same time. I don't listen to much female singers but that one turns me on and rocks at the same time. lol

I think you're thinking of her sister Nancy. She was the lead guitarrist and backup singer. But she was featured more prominently in music videos because she looked better than Ann.

She's good - but not the best.

Ann Wilson--Heart was a great band until '80s.
I was never into her music, but there's no denying that Pat Benatar should be on this list.

that plus Ani DiFranco and Shirley Manson would be my list. :tu
I also sentimentialy pick Janis Joplin... but as 1,000's of amle rock singers have proved , you don;t have to have a 'good singing voice' to be a ROCK singer. :toast

That show was a joke and I've been a huge Patrice fan for years. Little Sister/Sister 7 was one of the best bands Austin's ever seen.

Ann Wilson.
Nancy was the hot one. She actually only sang 3 or 4 songs. Ann was the lead singing whale.
Janet Gardner was the lead singer of the all female band Vixen. They had big hits such as Edge of a Broken Heart, Cryin' and Love Is A Killer.
Lita Ford was damn good.
I would have to say that some great choices as well are Janis, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Stevie Nicks, Grace Slick.
Cheesey or not, you cannot discount Tina Turner or Annie Lennox or Debbie Harry or Patty Smyth.
What about Gwen Stephani or Sheryl Crow or Susanna Hoffs?

Is that the lead singer? I never knew her name.
I have Bloodletting and Walking in London. Both are great albums. First time I ever heard them was on the Pump Up the Volume Soundtrack with Everybody Knows.

Here's a little love for Annie Haslam, Tanita Tikaram (an acquired taste, if ever there were one), and Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes), Nena Kerner (99 Red Balloons), and Nina Perrson.
But, getting back to the greatest ever ... Though she is still alive, I still wonder what may have been. ...
Sinead O'Connor.

Sinead did a great duet with The The on a song called Kingdom of Pain. Depressing lyrics, but great song.

Aye Carumba!
I forgot Lucinda Williams.
Yeah, she's not a rock singer per se, but she is a Rock Star!
I rarely recall cute phrases from music critics, but one of them nailed it when they said Lucinda has a "perfectly flawed" voice.
