Pau Orthez Heavily Scouted

For yesterdays Euroleague game Pau-Orthez against Zalgiris Kaunas, some NBA scouts were present in the stands of the Palais des Sports. Unfortunately they did not see a great game, but a least it was intense. Besides others, Memphis and Chicago have been present to see Ian Mahinmi finally having an interesting game, especially in defense, where he showed great speed on the help defense and on double teams. He finished the game with 6pts (100%) 3rebs and 2blks.

The post also mentions some other players that they were likely there to see. Some prospects didn't play but there was also a Lithuanian who impressed, Jonas Maciulis

from the euroleague.net write-up of the game, only the parts about Mahinmi. :

"The lead continued to switch hands as Ian Mahinmi scored 4 straight for Pau and Jankunas came right back with a layup to make it 21-22 midway through the period.

...

Pau stormed back with Miles setting Mahinmi up for a dunk and then dishing to Wright for back-to-back scores as Pau went ahead.

After Mahinmi swatted Collins's shot, Pau called timeout to plan for the closing minutes.

Chicago? Mahinimi for Thomas? or Noccioni?

Sounding good.

Maybe get Chris Duhon in the deal?

Nice find. Mahinmi had been sucking this year, so hopefully he can show some promise before the season is over.

Anyone watch Pau Orthez games and seen any improvement in Mahinmi? Bruno?

With the way Mahinmi has played this year, the Spurs would be lucky to get Andre Barrett out of the Bulls.

Mahinimi has the physical tools to pull a nice player in return, everyone knows he's green.

Put it this way, the Spurs aren't going to give him up for crap...and you guys act like Chicago's glut at SF is a positive. It's not.

The Spurs don't trade Mahinmi. No one rates him as high as they do.

Plus, it's not like the Bulls and Grizzlies were there for him. There are plenty of other prospects in that game.

Random Thoughts:

1) Michael Wright is exactly why the Spurs are scared to pay Luis Scola big bucks. Wright is a 6-foot-5 power forward who is putting up big numbers for Pau-Orthez. In the NBA, Wright would be small for a shooting guard. The power forward position is the least transferable position going from Europe to the NBA.

2) I can't believe the Spurs are still wasting time on Melvin Sanders. For those who don't know, he now plays for Pau-Orthez AKA Spurs East.

3) Aaron Miles is better than Beno Udrih or Jacque Vaughn. Is there anyway the Spurs can get him over this year? Perhaps Pau-Orthez can be nice and just let him go.

4) I'm not a big Britton Johnsen fan, but he might be a decent deep bench player next year if the Spurs blow up their roster. A 6-foot-10 small forward isn't something this team should pass on.

5) Looking at Mahinmi's stats, I'm amazed at how bad he's been. Last game he had two block, but the bad news is he had ONE block all season coming into that game. WTF?

His rebounding numbers look pretty good but he averages about 9 fouls per 48 minutes :lol. It looks like his best game was the first game of the year when he had 9 points and 5 rebounds.

A Spurs bigman having their best game in the first game of the season? Where have I seen that before?

mahinmi is being treated by the spurs like he is the next david robinson
he is doing what spurs tell him to do
signed a short deal
so buyout is not going to be an issue
he is not going to be traded scola on the other hand...

Really odd that both Chicago and Memphis were there, the two teams most likely involved in a Pau Gasol deal.

we have been talking about this on the other thread.
Scouts haven't been there to watch Mahinmi, the watched some of the young prospects (especially from Zalgiris) , who will be in the draft 2007 or 2008.
the no 1 target likely was Jonas Maciulis, who showed great improvement this season and who will be in this years draft. think of Nocioni, when describing him.
a bit undersized for NBA SF (6-6), but a hell of a enforcer on the court. strong and fearless. (should also be interesting for the Spurs, he will likely be a second round pick)

The presence of scouts in Pau has been mentionned in other threads this week. They were also in Tau (Scola's team) the day after.

El copa del rey in Spain and the french cup in France allo scouts to see a lot of players in a limited time.

Mahinmi is playing better since a month or so. He seems to have 100% recovered from his early season injury.
Like already said in those threads, he had a good game this week in euroleague (aggressive, mobile, rebounding, defending...) and his bulk up working is starting to show.

No way you can compare Mahinmi to Pietrus. MP is a swingman, Mahinmi a big.
