Okay, the Vietnamese influx is more recent than the Irish one. But, surely you're not suggesting the problems that existed right after the boats started showing up in the 70's still exist.

oh look, another reference to pop culture :rolleyes don't worry, i'm well traveled, been to about 30 of the 50 states and to three of the seven continents not including north america.

anyway, dearborn (no E) is a great example of my argument, thanks for bringing it up. there was an excellent article in the times last week about the harassment that arab-americans in dearborn were experiencing due to post 9-11 sentiment and the problems in the middle east. anyway, back to dearborn. it's a great example of what i meant by a fractured society, a microcosm existing within the united states, belonging in the u.s. but not really a part of the larger community. there is a reason that most non-middle eastern people live in west dearborn and have moved from the places where they previously reside...same reason italians have mostly left little italy (asians) and parts of brooklyn (latinos). there have been strides to include muslims into different aspects of the school system, from elementary to college, but that's about it. The current mayor of Dearborn ran on a platform that highlighted "the Arab problem" and there's very litte in the way of city administration that has included the Arab population. Dearborn is precisely the kind of example I needed, thanks.

well, i will admit that for each successive decade in the 20th century, things have continued to improve greatly since the decade before, or even since the ealry part of the 20th century. however, i think as the demographics of america change, so will the tolerance levels of certain communities, and no, i don't just mean white people. we haven't achieved a melting pot even though that's our goal and i don't think that the exceptions, as g-townspur likes to call them are decreasing, if anything, i they're on the rise.
