San Antonio Spurs forward Bruce Bowen and H-E-Buddy offered line dancing lessons to 15 students from Pecan Valley Elementary as a celebration of the arrival of this year’s San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.
Silver Dancer Choreographer Raquel Garcia taught Bowen, H-E-Buddy and the children how to do the Boot Scootin’ Boogie and the Electric Slide and Bowen educated the children about the importance of physical activity, good nutrition and how dance of any kind can be a good form of physical activity.
In its third year, the GET FIT program has expanded to include middle schools along with elementary schools to promote healthy lifestyles for students in the San Antonio Area. This program recognizes approximately 3,000 students for making sound choices about nutrition and fitness. Schools may nominate students so that they can be rewarded with Spurs tickets and other special prizes. Bruce Bowen created the idea for GET FIT during a public relations class that he completed at UTSA during the spring of 2004 and partnered with H-E-B to make the program a reality for the San Antonio youth.
