Despite the perception that the Dallas Cowboys coaching search is moving away from Wade Phillips, league sources familiar with the process insist that the San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator remains on owner Jerry Jones' radar screen and retains a chance to land the job.

Phillips spent much of Tuesday contacting coaches he wants to hire as assistants if he gets the Dallas job, those sources said.


"It would be an overstatement to say he's putting together a staff," one source said. "But he was just touching base with his guys, updating them as to where he thinks things stand, and trying to hold [potential staffers] together. He is still in the hunt."


San Diego management officials believe there is still a chance Phillips could win the third NFL head coaching post of his career.


On Wednesday, Indianapolis Colts assistant head coach Jim Caldwell became the 10th candidate to interview for a vacancy created when Bill Parcells opted to retire on Jan. 21. Phillips interviewed for the job on Jan. 26.

Caldwell met with Jones and his son Stephen for more than six hours Wednesday and said he expects a decision to be made in "short order."

"I had a great time," Caldwell said of his interview for the Cowboys' head coaching vacancy. "I learned a lot about the organization."

Caldwell said he also met with Jason Garrett, who is expected to be named the Cowboys' offensive coordinator.

Caldwell said he didn't have enough time to talk about his offensive philosophy, but he stressed his organizational skills and talked about how important it would be to honor the Cowboys' rich tradition.

In head coaching stints with Denver (1993-94) and Buffalo (1998-2000), Phillips compiled a 45-38 record, including the playoffs, and led his teams to three wild-card berths. He also served stints as interim head coach at New Orleans in 1985 and Atlanta in 2003.


Phillips, 59, is an attractive candidate, in part, because of his preference for the 3-4 defense. The Cowboys have invested considerable time, energy, draft picks and money over the past three years assembling young players to help them transition to a 3-4 front, and Jones is not inclined at this point to scrap that experiment and go back to a 4-3 alignment.


One assistant coach contacted by Phillips on Tuesday said the Chargers' coordinator told him he expected a decision from the Cowboys by the end of his week.

League and Cowboys sources have told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will be named Dallas' head coach. Phillips traveled from San Diego to Dallas on Wednesday night after being told that he was their choice to replace the now-retired Parcells.

While contract details must still be worked out and a contract signed, a formal team announcement for Phillips could come as early as Thursday.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had reportedly been torn between hiring a defensive- or offensive-minded coach. Choosing Phillips answers that question and addresses issues with Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera. The Cowboys have been running a 3-4 defense while Rivera is the architect of Chicago's successful 4-3 scheme. Phillips has had great success with the 3-4 defense throughout his career and helped the Chargers to a 14-2 regular-season record in 2006.

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner was widely regarded as the front-runner for the Cowboys job. The hiring of former Cowboys quarterback Jason Garrett might have doomed his candidacy. Garrett's role has not been formally defined, but he will likely be named Dallas' offensive coordinator. Turner is considered one of the premier play-callers in the league, and Jones might not have wanted to impede Garrett, who reportedly impressed the Cowboys owner in their interview.

I really do think Jerry made a solid effort to find the right person. I for once don't feel like he made a snappy choice he'll live to regret. It was nice to see him take his time on this.

After a lengthy interviewing process that included 10 candidates, it appears Wade Phillips, as reported all day, is the Cowboys' man.

Phillips interviewed for the job back on Jan. 26, the fifth candidate to meet with Cowboys owner-general manager Jerry Jones and the staff. However, Phillips is the most experienced of all the candidates as not only a coach for 30 years in the NFL, but the son of former Oilers and Saints head coach Bum Phillips.

This would be Phillips' third head coaching stint after stops in Denver (1993-94) and Buffalo (1998-2000), along with two other interim head coaching positions in New Orleans (1985) and Atlanta (2003).

But his latest success has come in San Diego, where he spent the last three years as defensive coordinator. He led a Chargers unit that led the NFL in sacks.

Phillips is known for his aggressive 3-4 defensive schemes and that appeared to be the overriding factor for Jones and the Cowboys, who switched from 4-3 to 3-4 under Bill Parcells two years ago.

"Obviously, I like the 3-4," Phillips said following his interview Jan. 26. "I've been coaching it a long time. I think it gives you a lot of things, especially pass rush, that you can match up a lot, pass-rush wise. You can always beat blocking schemes, offensive blocking schemes. Obviously my background is defense and the 3-4. I like both of those things."

When he interviewed for the job back on Jan. 26, Phillips said inheriting a 9-7 team that advanced to the playoffs would be attractive for any new coach.

"Well, they had a good team," he said. "Bill Parcells was here, and put together a solid team. That's pretty important already. They were in the playoffs last year. That's a good start for any head coach."

The Cowboys interviewed two candidates this week, including Colts assistant head coach Jim Caldwell on Wednesday. The team also met with Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera on Tuesday.

Before heading off to the Super Bowl last week, Jones interviewed 49ers assistant head coach Mike Singletary. Saints defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs, Turner and Phillips interviewed two weekends ago here in Dallas.

In the first week of the coaching search, the Cowboys interviewed three in-house assistants in Tony Sparano, Todd Bowles and Todd Haley, who has now left for Arizona to become offensive coordinator.

The Cowboys' vacant defensive coordinator position could go to Bowles, who spent last year as the secondary coach. The Cowboys also will be looking for position coaches at running back, wide receiver, tight end and special teams. The club probably will look for a pair of quality control coaches as well.
