San Marcos-- In front of a record breaking crowd, Texas State was able to surpass No. 1 Rice, 3-2 at Bobcat Field Tuesday. It marked the Bobcats' first home game of the season and it came down to a bottom of the ninth decision.

In the bottom of ninth, Texas State found itself in a tough spot. The Owls were one out away from sending the game into extra innings. Senior outfielder Jared Bunn started the rally with a two-out single to right field. Next up was freshman designated hitter Paul Goldschmidt, who singled up the middle, advancing Bunn to second. With runners on first and second, redshirt freshman Laurn Randell was up to bat. The freshman stepped up big time and delivered a single to left field, scoring Bunn and winning the game.

Rice jumped on the scoreboard first in the top of the second. Outfielder Chad Lembeck reached first base on a fielder's choice with one out. He was advanced to third off of a Diego Seastrunk single to right field. Lembeck was brought home by a Tyler Henley single to left field, putting the Owls up 1-0.

The Owls would get their second run of the night from infielder Joe Savery. Bobcat pitcher B.J. Boening would walk Savery and a passed ball would put Savery on second. Boening was able to strike out Aaron Luna but gave up a double to Jordan Dodson, scoring Savery and putting Rice up 2-0 in the third inning.

Rice pitcher Matt Langwell did not allow a Bobcat hit in the first three innings. After two pitching changes, Texas State was able to jump on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Randell reached first on an Owl error and was advanced to third by a Casey Guest single to right field. Freshman catcher Ben Theriot laid a sacrifice bunt down the first base line to score Randell and advance Guest. A Thomas Field single to right field scored Guest and tied the game 2-2.

Solid defense and pitching would hold both teams scoreless until the ninth when the Randell RBI single would service the game winner.

The win against Rice marks a number of firsts. It was Randell's first game-winning hit in front of a record breaking crowd of 1,812. The previous record was set against Baylor in 2005 when 1,776 fans crowded into Bobcat Field. It was the first Texas State win over a No. 1-ranked team since a 2-1, 10-inning win at Texas on April 27, 2005.

Four Bobcats pitched, allowing a combined five hits. Justin Fiske came on in the sixth, allowing no hits, no runs and striking out four in 2.2 innings. Eric Weaver was credited with the win, throwing 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and striking out one. He knocked down a line drive by Danny Lehmann and threw a underhanded toss to first, ending the inning.

Randell led the offense, going one-for-four at the plate. He had one hit, scored one run and hit the game-winning RBI. Goldschmidt was also one-for-four at the plate. Theriot and Field both had one RBI. The win over Rice puts the Bobcats 3-1 on the season

The Bobcats play host to Prairie View A&M on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Bobcat Field.

I'm sure Rice has recovered from their stunning a week ago.

Not really, considering the Bobcats softened them up for the Aggies.
