View Full Version : Duncan's Fave Five Spurs

He said (during the halftime report yesterday) that his favorite Spurs were:
D-Rob, Malik Rose, Antonio Daniels, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili. Not necessarily in that order.

Very interesting to me. First of all, I think it shows what an emotional person TD is - he gets very attached to people and sees things through that lens. It also shows what he values, as all three of those players are some of the hardest workers and fiercest competitors. It's interesting that he didn't mention AJ, however - I recall some tension between AJ's preachiness and TD's style - and I thought for sure he'd mention Sean Elliot, but no.

Huh? I thought this was weird too. Hey, it's his list so I guess he can add whoever he wants.

they asked him HIS favorite players. He responded, how is it weird?

I was a little surprised that he didn't pick Sean too. I agree with your thoughts, Duncan definitely seems to be a loyal teammate/friend. It would follow that he would appreciate players that have a similar work ethic.

It's no secret that Duncan resented Elliott for taking his post finals MVP spotlight by announcing his kidney condition.

I had wondered if Tim having Malik in that list (and on national tv) was a shot at Pop...

it sounds like it was probably his five best spurs friends(at some point in time)

Everyone just start your post on this subject with "I think Duncan's best friends should have been...."

Some of us aren't surprised by this at all...no one was waiving goodbye with tears in their eyes when AJ left town. Not even Drob...not a word was spoke.

Duncan had one of his best playoffs ever against the Mavs last year...same Mavs he had met 2 times before...coincidence? Or an intense desire to hand AJ an asswhuppin? He was playing with a little something extra...and I don't mean the normal could natured competitiveness...I mean he wanted it.

Sean? Why would he pick Sean? They played one 50 game season together, plus scraps of others as Sean attempted his comeback(s). The players he listed he played a minimum of 4 seasons with.

From what I've heard, the players he listed are the players he's been closest to during his career. I wasn't suprised at all by this list.

You know a season is going downhill when who Duncan hangs out with off the court isn't good enough for Spurs fans.

AD and Malik are Duncan's two best friends. He had to say Tony and Manu or else there'd be revolts in the country of whichever one he left off. And Robinson was a no-brainer.

Not much to analyze here.

Well, in the spirit of all this mindless speculation ... who would be in David Robinson's 5? You know ... all the luminaries that Bob Bass and Larry Brown, et al, brought in to help him win all those titles.

(1) Negele Knight
(2) Larry Smith
(3) Uwe Blab
(4) Sidney Green
(5) Vinny Del Negro

Maybe Charles Smith '96? Actually, Pop was responsible for that one.

J.R. Reid!

Cadillac Anderson.

I got a ton of guys who could be in David's 5.

I would have put Gervin in. He's one of the coolest people to ever wear the silver and black. He is, after all, the Iceman. :)

Why wouldn't he be sincere in naming Tony and Manu, he obviously respects their games and became close with them, or and was grateful for them to play alongside with him.

I think you analyzed it right there in that post. I don't think Tim plays political. Those ARE his favorite Spurs, he doesn't have to pick with other people's responses in mind. The announcer dude already called him out for picking his friends in a camaraderie since, instead of Top Spurs.

His list to me, seems to be the players he would jump in a foxhole with, if you're gonna read into his reasons. So I don't think there was any hesitance in picking both Tony and Manu. Screw the public outcries.

yup, agreed. No close bond. Hours and hours of ps2 w/ Daniels and Malik.
DROB was a big brother figure and Manu and Tony are his only teammates giving him support this year. Plus, he could only name 5.
