COMMISSIONER'S VIEW: Stern: Once is enough

He says arena inadequate for big event

If Las Vegas hopes to have the NBA All-Star Game return in the future, it must have a new facility for the league to showcase its best players.

Commissioner David Stern said Sunday before the playing of the 2007 All-Star Game that the NBA will not return to the Thomas & Mack Center.

"No," was Stern's reply when asked whether the league would be willing to return to the UNLV campus for its midseason showcase. "We did a one-time thing at the Thomas & Mack. They're not equipped to hold major-league events at that building."

Speaking at a brunch hosted by Turner Network ......... snip

He is so right, being a Las Vegas resident for the past 13 years, I was shocked at the low class scum that came into Vegas along with the all star game. over 200 incidents of violence in just a couple of days including gun fire on the strip which never happens or very, very rarely happens and to top it off a woman running away from the gunfire ran into traffic and was hit and killed. Litter everywhere, rude, ignorant, disgusting people running amuck, it was horrible. Traffic was a nightmare, Thomas & Mack is waaaay to small of a venue. Ridiculous.

I don't think it's the size of the arena, it's the lack of amenities. I think big business sponsor muckity mucks had to sit in GASP regular seats instead of some luxury box with an open bar and bigscreen TV. And that's AFTER a ton of money was spent on the arena.

Come on now don't act like Vegas is a clean little town. There is always crime and garbage you can't walk 10 feet on the strip with out getting porn cards stuck in your face. Also Vegas has a ton of gangs now that are moving there to run drugs and shoot people.

Thank GAWD. And the shows were f'in horrible. Gordie Brown, Clint Holmes, and The Rat Pack impersonators blew it and Wayne Newton looked like The Joker. I love Las Vegas, but the organizers fucked this once in a lifetime opportunity up completely.

wow...you are one puritanical dude.
how do you equate a free market economy in which people push sexually explicit material to murdering thugs shooting up innocent civilians caught in the crossfire?

you are very misguided

i dont see why they decided to go to Las Vegas in the first place. Did they even check out the T&M center and the city itself and run feasibility reports before making the decision to come out to Las Vegas???

Congrats Las Vegas. Stern was looking for a wife, and he just dismissed y'all as a hooker.

I vote for a team in Las Vegas. Let's put SJax, Artest, Tinsley, Rasheed, and J. O'Neal as their starting lineup. Fill out the bench with D-Leaguers with nothing to lose. Guaranteed to make the news.

That's exactly right. I remember Salt Lake City (of all places) even having the same problems when they had the ASG years ago. The ASG brings out a lot of thugs looking to get into trouble any way they can. It's not Vegas per se, it's the game itself. Everybody thinks their somebody when the ASG comes to town.

Either way, if LV were to get a first-rate arena and become an NBA city, they wouldn't have any more problems than any other city that has a team.

There's BIG difference between hold the ASG in Vegas vs other cities. There are hardly any police outside of the casinos.
