I'm listening to Sirius' NBA Radio, so if anything comes across here or if anybody sees anything else, post it here, I guess.

DALLAS trades Anthony Johnson to ATLANTA for a second round draft pick (year not specifically mentioned).

Here's a thought: Does D-Wade's injury adversely affect the trade thoughts of the East's playoff contenders?

The Nets might now be not so willing to trade Kidd and Carter.

I would rather throw Jackie Butler to backup Tony than have a broken-down Speedy Claxton.

Not likely...Speedy signed a BIG, long-term deal...one he's clearly not worthy of.

It does beg the question of whether they'll go with 4 pg's though. The Royal Ivey for a future second rounder doesn't sound half bad if the Spurs end up trading Beno....

FromWayDowntown
02-22-2007, 12:40 PM
Yeah, physical problems aside, there's no way that the Spurs would be willing to take on Speedy Claxton's contract -- and that's a smart decision on their part.

That's what I'm thinking. I think they are gonna try to get PJ Brown or Najera. Anthony Johnson wasn't going to get any playoff minutes anyway. They have JJ Barera (sp?) to use as 3rd point guard. He fits their style better than Johnson did anyway.

Guarantee they don't get rid of any of their SF for anything less than a legitimate immediate contributor at PG or C. I(f you offered a second round pick for Smith/Childress/M. Williams, Knight would laugh in your face, pimp slap you, and tell you to get out of his office...

Hypothetical trade scenario (which won't happen because of ownership dispute and lack of desire to take on more large contracts):

PG Andre Miller for SF M. Williams/Childress

That's the kind of talent the Hawks can get back with ease....

Chad Ford's chat:

Chris (San Antonio): All of these teams wanting point guards and the Spurs not playing Beno Udrih at all. So far it doesn't look like it will happen, but do you think the Spurs will be able to find a taker?

SportsNation Chad Ford: (12:50 PM ET ) I think Indiana is interested though I'm not sure they'll pull off a deal. Seems like all the Spurs want is a little cap relief and a second round pick. Someone will probably make that deal. In fact, I wonder why the Hawks didn't try to get Udrih instead of Johnson.

Dallas' benefits in the trade:

From ESPN.com's own Nick Silva, our cap guru: "The Hawks-Mavs trade saved Dallas 2.64M in tax for this year and 5.72M next year (2.86M salary + 2.86M tax) and they got the Hawks pick in the second round which is 37 right now and they gained a 2.64M trade exception."

The Spurs' own first rounder, Milwakee's second rounder (late 30's overall, the Spurs own second rounder (likely in 50's), and possibly the Bulls second rounder if they finish with a top nine record (likely in 50's)...

Sam is without a doubt the coach of the year in the East. He probably won't win the award because of Sloane and Van Gundy, but he has shown what he can do when he has decent players with the right character. He also helped put this team together- having played with Rasho and coached TJ Ford.

What I can't wait for is when Bryan wins the Executive of the Year Award- after people blasted his trading for Rasho and TJ and not firing Sam. :D

Mainly because it doesn't hurt the Raptors, but essentially, it's been that Sam's done more than enough to realistically keep his job and Fred Jones was essentially dead weight with Calderon stepping up.

Well, Devin Harris is a choker..big time

You'd think that Spurs fans more than any other would know what Devin Harris can do after what he did the Spurs in the playoffs last year...he turned the series around in game 2 and was great in 4 of 7 games...

well, anything decent i meant

tough to beat the AI deal that happened a few weeks ago and the J-Kidd/VC rumors were far from possibles. It looks like Bibby may be the only "star" player on the move...

One question....what does Toronto do if Magliore doesn't get traded? Is he cut loose?

Kings don't make move as trade deadline passes
By Sam Amick - Bee Staff Writer
Last Updated 12:33 pm PST Thursday, February 22, 2007

Mike Bibby will remain with the Kings after the NBA trade deadline came and went without Sacramento making a move.

The NBA trade deadline came and went Thursday, and the Kings' roster looked the same after noon PST as it did before it.

While the efforts were many to move Mike Bibby for a package that could help the Kings going into the future, the point guard will, according to a team official, remain with the team.

The Cleveland Cavaliers continued a push to land Bibby early Thursday morning but was unable to come to a compromise. No other Kings trades took place either.

The Kings weren't alone in their inactivity at the trade deadline. Just a pair of minor trades took place Thursday morning, with Portland trading Juan Dixon to Toronto for Fred Jones in a swap of guards, and the Dallas Mavericks shipping veteran reserve guard Anthony Johnson to Atlanta for a second-round draft pick.

http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/breaking_news/16759796.htm

Timberwolves stand pat
The Timberwolves didn't make any trades today as the NBA's deadline passed at 2 p.m., so they will have to look within their current group to resolve their woes.

No magic solution was announced in the form of a trade. And, realistically, that might have been too much to ask. So Mike James is still here, along with Marko Jaric, Troy Hudson and the rest of the team's guards. The Wolves had too many, and now they still do.

Coach Randy Wittman said after Thursday's practice that he wanted his players to play the right way. It's an old Larry Brown expression that became popular when he was in Detroit. And now Wittman knows exactly which names to call upon moving forward with the final 28 regular-season games.

Wednesday night's 100-95 loss to the Charlotte Bobcats at home featured Minnesota's biggest blown lead of the season: 17 points. The Wolves are 25-29.

Sonics pass on NBA trade deadline

By Seattle Times staff Seattle Times staffattle Times staff

Unlike last year, today's NBA tradeline passed without any moves being made by the Sonics.

At last year's trade deadline, the Sonics were part of four-team trade that gave them Bryon Russell and Earl Watson, as well as Mike Wilks.

No other teams had reported trades as of mid-day.

The Sonics are 21-32 and last place in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. They are 14 games behind first-place Utah (35-18).

Trade deadline ends, Nets keep Kidd and Carter

Thursday, February 22, 2007

By AL IANNAZZONE
STAFF WRITER

EAST RUTHERFORD — The Nets’ All-Star backcourt will remain intact for at least the rest of this season.

Jason Kidd and Vince Carter remained in New Jersey after the NBA trade deadline passed at 3 p.m. Thursday.

There was plenty of trade talk and rumors about the two players, but in the end Nets’ management didn’t find a deal that would help them immediately or in the future.

Kidd was linked to teams such as the Lakers, Suns, Warriors and Clippers. Carter received interest from numerous teams, including the Knicks.

The Nets were said to be considering a deal that would send Kidd back to Phoenix in a package that included Kurt Thomas, Raja Bell, Leandro Barbosa and a draft pick belonging to the Atlanta Hawks.

The Lakers wanted Kidd badly to team up with Kobe Bryant. But Los Angeles never sweetened the offer of Jordan Farmar, Chris Mihm, Kwame Brown, Aaron McKie and a couple of picks. The Nets wanted second-year center Andrew Bynum, but he was deemed untouchable.

The Knicks were offering a package for Carter that included Channing Frye, Malik Rose and Jamal Crawford.

Even though the Nets decided to stand pat with Kidd and Carter, either one — or both — could be moved after the season.

Now that the deadline has passed, however, the Nets can focus on making a playoff push. They have 27 games left and are two behind Miami for the eighth seed in the East.

Of greater concern now is the health of Kidd. He has been playing with a cracked rib for an unspecified time and may not play in Friday’s game against the Kings. Coach Lawrence Frank said Kidd was “hurting” Thursday and listed him as questionable for Friday. Kidd was unavailable for comment.

No trade for Cavaliers
Attempts to land Bibby fail
By Brian Windhorst

Despite two days of heavy negotiations, the Cavaliers were unable to complete a trade before 3 p.m. today, the deadline for trades in the NBA.

The team pursed a hand full of options to land Sacramento Kings point guard Mike Bibby but ultimately failed to get a third team involved.

The Cavs had serious talks with three or four trade partners in an attempt to land the pieces to acquire Bibby but were unable to pull it off.

See Ohio.com and the Akron Beacon Journal for more details tomorrow.

Bulls' bosses stand pat as NBA deadline passes
By Mike McGraw
Daily Herald Sports Writer
Posted Thursday, February 22, 2007

CLEVELAND _ The Bulls couldn’t get a deal done before the NBA’s trade deadline passed at 2 p.m. Thursday. They will carry the same undersized roster they’ve had all season into tonight’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Quicken Loans Arena.

According to a league source, Bulls general manager John Paxson worked the phones hard all week trying to acquire any kind of post scorer.

Most of the attention has been focused on Memphis 7-footer Pau Gasol, who asked to be traded last month. But the Bulls also had interest in players such as Sacramento’s Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Houston guard Bonzi Wells and Washington’s Etan Thomas.

The lack of activity is a disappointment for the Bulls, because they had more than $13 million in expiring contracts to peddle between P.J. Brown, Michael Sweetney, Malik Allen and Andre Barrett. Since those players may not be back next season, the Bulls will lose some of their payroll flexibility.

Paxson refused to part with any players from the Bulls’ young nucleus, specifically Ben Gordon, Luol Deng or Kirk Hinrich. It’s possible the Bulls and Grizzlies could revisit a Gasol trade this summer.

Two minor trades were announced prior to the deadline. Toronto sent Fred Jones to Portland for Juan Dixon in an exchange of undersized shooting guards. Atlanta acquired point guard Anthony Johnson from Dallas for a second-round pick.

Cleveland was rumored to be chasing Sacramento guard Mike Bibby in a trade that would reportedly send power forward Drew Gooden to the Kings. But that deal hadn’t happened, either, by 2 p.m. and it appeared the Cavs’ personnel will be unchanged at tonight’s game against the Bulls.

Mike McGraw will have more on Bulls and reports from the game in Friday’s Daily Herald and later at dailyherald.com.

Jazz make trade for Henderson

But team expected to waive veteran big man

By Tim Buckley
Deseret Morning News
The Utah Jazz made only one minor deal before Thursday's NBA trade deadline, acquiring veteran big man Alan Henderson from Philadelphia in exchange for a swap of second-round draft picks, and cash consideration going from Philadelphia to Utah.
The move, however, is not expected to impact the Jazz's current 14-man roster. That is because Utah is expected to waive Henderson, who has played 34 games and averaged 3.5 points in a mostly reserve role for the Sixers this season.
The trade will lead to the Jazz having a better second-round pick, though details on the second-round picks involved were not immediately available.
Jazz basketball operations senior vice president Kevin O'Connor said he was not tempted enough to pull the trigger on any other deals.
"I felt like if we could have improved our team we would have tired to," O'Connor said. "But we didn't think we could."
The Jazz are idle until playing Friday night at Denver.

Lakers decide to stand pat
Clippers also opt to make their run for a playoff spot without dealing for another player.

No deal
The noon trade deadline came and went, and the Lakers stayed the way they were.

Jason Kidd went to practice Thursday morning as a member of the New Jersey Nets, and the Lakers assembled, fully intact, a few hours later for practice at their El Segundo training facility.

The Lakers had been trying to make something work for Kidd, but it was difficult with Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom and, obviously, Kobe Bryant designated as untouchables.

As expected, the Clippers also made no moves.

General Manager Elgin Baylor spoke with many teams about potential trades before the deadline, but nothing proposed would have significantly helped the Clippers in their bid to earn a Western Conference playoff berth, team sources said.

The Clippers (25-29) have lost four in a row and are tied for ninth place in the conference with the Minnesota Timberwolves, a half a game behind the Golden State Warriors for the final playoff spot.

The Clippers play host to the Warriors on Saturday at Staples Center.

Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak did not attend Wednesday's home game against Portland, preferring to stay in El Segundo to work the phones.

His Wednesday night premonition that a trade was "very unlikely" turned out to be accurate, and by late Thursday morning, the Lakers had only faint hopes for a late-breaking deal.

It all became official when morning turned into afternoon.

Some of those proposed deals were flat silly. Lakers wanted Kidd for free and Chicago keeps wanting Gasol practically for free, as well.

If I'm New Jersey, I might have made a mistake not to take those packages for Kidd (from Phoenix) and for Carter (from New York). There were some nice pieces in there.

You Can’t Say I Didn’t Tell You…

It’s in the video on the main page – there was a lot of talk… at the end of the day, two deals got done and that’s the end of the 2007 NBA trade season.

Here are some of the things that didn’t happen but got close – according to the 45 phone calls exchanged at 3:05pm EST…

A For Effort- You gotta hand it to the Cavaliers – they worked the phones all day trying to make something out of nothing. At the end of the day they did not have the pieces to get Sacramento to move on Mike Bibby. The Kings will likely explore moving Mike this summer when there are more options, and do not be surprised to see Cleveland back in the hunt for Bibby in 4 months.

Miami Tried- Word is the HEAT were simply too late to the dance, word is they had Dorell Wright and Udonis Haslem on the table for Bibby, but that was not enough. One Miami source wondered aloud if that was offered for Bibby, what did Miami offer for Vince Carter and Jason Kidd?

The Spurs Played It Safe- At the top of the day it was said the Spurs were willing to trigger the “right deal” – several teams called about Beno Udrih, and Beno himself said last week his agent told him more than a handful of team were interested. Spurs head coach Greg Popovich said yesterday that he’d be hard pressed to move his “insurance policy”

Toronto Made A Move On Darko- The Raptors had a second deal in mind when they triggered Juan Dixon, and that was sending Morris Peterson to Orlando for Darko Milicic. The Magic passed on the deal, but word is Toronto may make another run at Darko this summer when he hits restricted free agency.

Lakers Thought They Had Him- The Lakers genuinely thought they had a deal for Jason Kidd last night, word was Jerry Buss agreed to send $3 million in cash and two future number one draft choices, including this year’s pick. At the end of the day it was not enough for New Jersey – who was steadfast that a Kidd deal had to involve Andrew Bynum. The Lakers are expected to add Scottie Pippen in the coming days and will be watching the waiver wires.

Dennis Johnson Dies During Practice- Former Celtic star and D-League coach of the Austin Toros Dennis Johnson collapsed during a practice today, and ultimately died. The cause is not yet known, and the news was shocking as the league tried to uncover all the trade moves taking place. Dennis Johnson was 52.

I also find the almost-deal for Darko interesting...and the continued future interest...

Found this nugget in an article (will post link below) that states Jones has agreed to cut his contract short one year, basically making this trade a wash contractually....

Guess that means that he wanted the trade. He wasn't getting to play at all, and he's back home.

I also find the almost-deal for Darko interesting...and the continued future interest...
Chad Ford has been grumbling about Darko to Toronto for a while. They would have to move Rasho in the summer to sign Darko.

Chad Ford has been grumbling about Darko to Toronto for a while. They would have to move Rasho in the summer to sign Darko.

Why? They won't be far enough under the cap to sign him to an offer sheet if they don't?

It's not like Rasho is averaging 35MPG and the Raps play Bosh out of position at Center for a prolonged stretch on the Court. Darko just adds to the potential depth at F/C and if I'm not mistaken, the Raps have the cap space to at least make a decent offer...

I know Chump...which one is what I was getting at? The Spurs only expiring contract is Bonner...the Spurs would have to eat the cost into next year if it was anyone else...

Vaughn is on a one year deal and I believe White's next year is nonguaranteed.

Mr. Body
02-22-2007, 05:22 PM
I don't see them waiving anyone. White and Udrih are still valuable and they'll keep Vaughn for chemistry and for producing at least something so far. On court chemistry is at least as important as anything else.

Yeah, White's next year is a team option, so that is a possiblity.

I have a hard time thinking the Spurs would get rid of Vaughn, they obviously like his hustle and defense enough to jump him over Beno for the second spot...

But, I'd be all for it...

What value does White have?

AFBlue

What value does White have?

No current value, but potential future value....

He was good enough to get drafted at the top of the second round and was good enough to get picked up a second time after Rick Carlisle made "the hardest cut of his life", and if the Spurs get rid of him, I guarantee he doesn't last more than 10 days w/o a contract. I wouldn't give up on him just yet....

Mr. Body

What value does White have?

A little. Julius Hodge just got unceremoniously waived, so I'd say White has a grace period of a year before he reaches that point. I was thinking he'd be worth sweetening a deal for another player, but that's not likely to happen, either. He's basically Bobby Jones at this point. Who's Bobby Jones, you may ask? Exactly. The real winner? Portland.

if the Spurs get rid of him, I guarantee he doesn't last more than 10 days w/o a contract.Same with Atkins. Who would help this team win this year? Sure I wouldn't be crazy about letting White go, but this is a no brainer.

What time is the deadline?

Mr. Body
02-22-2007, 05:45 PM
The 'grace period' I meant in terms of "he's turning the corner soon!" It's surprising how fast some teams are willing to throw away guys who haven't produced -- Utah was avidly shopping Ronnie Brewer, the Clippers were done with Korolev a while ago -- which begs the question, how long does a pick get before he gets thrown away?

Not saying White will turn the corner. IMO he's as fundamentally worthless as Jackie Butler>>> and, Mrs. White and Mrs. Butler, I'm not saying that personally about your sons.

Sure there's potential, but again -- who would help win this year? White or Atkins? If Atkins wants to join, are you really willing to say "No thanks, James White might be able to play in an NBA game someday."?
