about this 4 game win streak? I for one am not. They have been beating the sorry teams all year by barely hanging on in the fourth quarter, yeah they beat the Pistons but i think Detroit was already on all star break when the Spurs got them! When and if they can beat a top team in the west then maybe I will change my tune btu I just dont see it. What do yall think????

Solid D

I think that the Spurs will be fortunate if they are in the opposite bracket from the Mavs in the playoffs and the Spurs can defend well enough to get to the WCFs.

If the playoffs started today, Dallas (1) would play either GS or NO/OKC (8). In the same bracket Utah (4) and Houston (5) would play each other. San Antonio would have to deal with the Lakers and then the winner of PHX v. Denver.

1. Dallas .833
2. Phoenix .759
3. San Antonio .673
4. Utah .660
5. Houston .642
6. LA Lakers .545
7. Denver .500
8. Golden State .473
8. N.O./OKC .473

That's about as good as you could hope as a Spur's fan. Houston and Dallas are the toughest match-ups, IMO.

However it shakes out, the most likely course through the Western Conference (and to the Championship since the Leastern conference won't put up a fight) ultimately goes through Dallas and Phoenix...so the first round matchup is essentially irrelevant.

On the topic at hand, the Spurs have issues that can be masked or overlooked over a few-game stretch, but I guarantee those weaknesses will be exposed in a prolonged series versus a top-echelon Western Conference playoff team. I am not excited about the win streak, nor do I think it means the team has "turned a corner".

Sadly enough, reality will hit hard come playoff time. I'm bracing now...

Every series in a playoff bracket is important. Injuries and upsets happen. Case in point, Joe Johnson gets whacked going to the basket by Jerry Stackhouse and gets his face broken. The loss of a hot Joe Johnson didn't keep the Suns from beating Dallas but it allowed Bruce Bowen the luxury of focusing on Marion and the Spurs moved on to play Detroit. Stuff happens. Rounds 1 and 2 are not irrelevant.

See you're point and agree that injuries can play a role (as it might with D-Wade possibly undergoing season-ending surgery)...

But without relying on a hypothetical injury to a key player on one of the two teams I believe can beat the Spurs in a prolonged series (Dal/Phx), the Spurs will have their weaknesses exposed and stand little chance of winning....that was my point.

It doesn't matter if the Spurs get past round one or round two if they indeed have to face a healthy Phoenix or Dallas team, they are clearly the underdog...

I'm not sure how to explain this, but anyways. I have a strong sense Houston will upset Dallas in the 2nd round. It's real eiree. I see Dirk missing shots. The Tree will over-power The Dirt. I guess I'll call it then, Houston over Dallas in the 2nd Round.

To me...

Top team = Team that is supposedly better than the Spurs

So no, the Pistons are not a top team. Until the Spurs knock off Phoenix and/or Dallas while they're at full capacity, I would say the Spurs will not beat a "top team".

good point. But still think to beat the Pistons on the road was a big boost for the guys.
And the hawks game was a big boost for Manu as well,to get in his zone, and bild some self confidence.

It was good to see Manu dominate the Hawks (especially in person :D ), but the rest of the Spurs' games left alot to be desired. The Pistons win was good, and I enjoyed the smothering defense against the Nuggets, but I'm wary of saying the Spurs have "turned the corner" and are "rounding into shape". Taking a wait-and-see approach...

Yes, I am excited to watch the spurs
Yes, I still think experience and COMPOSURE prevails....(even though dallas broke through last year...(manu's lack of composure) dallas still had and probably still will have composure issues....(can only learn from mistakes)

in the end if YOU already know the outcome why stay? ITS called HOPE and HOPE is what the PLAYOFFS are about! If it isn't in the cards....GREAT SEASON" C YA next YEAR SCUMBAGS" otherwise

Detroit was already in all-star break mode. Lets face it Spurs beat Nets-no kidd,Pistons-already on break thinking bout Vegas, Nuggets-dysfunctional group I must say and Hawks nuff said about them. I love my Spurs just as much as everyone and hope the corner has been turned but I wont let myself get too excited cause they have beaten no one good the past 2 months.

It's about expectations...

I'm glad that the Spurs are winning these games and I enjoy seeing them do well, but I'm not ready to say that they have "turned the corner" nor am I willing to say the Spurs can win a 7-game series against the Mavs/Suns.

If the Spurs were losing these games, I'd have a tough time saying the Spurs could win a 7 game series against the Lakers/Nuggets....

you think the spurs are better or worst tham last year?
cause last year Dallas got away with it only cause of a bad foul.
I really think that it´ll be a VERY close series between Dallas and SA,closer tham last year.

Tough to say whether they are better or worse. Tim Duncan being healthy instantly makes them better, but the Spurs haven't solved (IMO) the backup PG spot that bit them last year, and I'm not convinced as of yet that Elson/Oberto is an upgrade over Rasho/Nazr. I'd lean toward saying the Spurs are marginally better, but the Mavs and Suns are markedly better, which makes them the favorites....

To me, Spurs basketball truly starts to take shape around the beginning of March. Usually its because the influx of Tim's supporting cast needs time to gel. Its almost March, so I'm excited.

This is the one thing I'm optomistic about. It seems that role players like Bonner and Elson have really not had the opportunity to develop that chemistry with the other players because of various injuries, etc. I think both could be pivotal to the Spurs' success down the stretch and in the playoffs depending on how they develop next to the big 3.

Phat Tony, having said what I said and you said, I'm sure you agree that the absolute key to this team is health. You mentioned Bonner and Elson...those guys MUST not go down again. We need some luck!

But as long as Tim, Manu and Tony are good to go, it'll be freakin WAR for any opponent come playoff time.

me too,I think the spurs just need to play consistently for 48 mins for the rest of the reg season, like they played vs. the Pistons,Nuggets and Wizzards these last couple of weeks, and them they´ll be just fine for a playoff run.

The record or personnel issues at this point are a moot issue. Winning these past 4 games is not the issue either. It is the way they win that tells you something is different. I watched the Denver game and it was the first time this year that the main players played hard and physical defense. It was awsome to see that again. If they come with type of energy the rest of the way. No team will stop them.

Intensity - check
Execution- check
Clearly defined roles - blurry (still in flux)
Rebounds - lone ranger
Perimeter defense - on and off
shotclock viols - down for now
Overall defense - developing in right direction (no easy layups, please!)
turnovers - improving
offense - adequate (feeding off of defense)
attitude - killa

Just my opinion!

I'm sure the strategy laid out by Pop was to get on the Rockets early because of their late arrival. And they did. Swarming defense with lots of energy early and it carried over late.

A couple of times, Elson even looked like he knew the system and came over to help. We can be very tough when we play with that kind of defensive energy.

Excited? I'm starting to stand up.

That rebounding one is our weakpoint right now I think. Especially on the offensive glass. When shots aren't falling we've got to be able to grab some O boards and I don't see us doing much of that. We'll need it in grind it out playoff games.
