View Full Version : Vote Off a War Movie.

We had a few demands for another "vote off a _____" thread after the last one, so I figured I'd start another to see if it works out. If it does, cool. If not, no biggie.
For those of you who are new to this, I'm going to list some war movies. They'll each start out with 5 points. You can only vote once every 4 hours. When you vote, you add a point to one movie, and subtract a point from another one.
Example:
+ Patton
- Red Dawn
You'll then update the list after your addition and subtraction. Patton would now move up to 6 points, and Red Dawn would move down to 4.
If that's not clear enough, just sit back and watch the voters who know what to do. You'll catch on quickly.
Once a Movie reaches 0 points, it's officially "voted out." The last remaining Movie obviously wins. Once there's about 10 movies left, we'll switch to subtraction votes only just like the "Guy Movie" thread.
You may have to do some editing, so once you've posted your vote, please make sure that no one else was voting during the same time you were. If someone did, edit your post to correct the list. If you notice something wrong with the list, go ahead and update it.
If you think there's a war movie worth adding, go ahead and speak up early in the voting. If it's a movie that has a shot at winning, I'll add it to the list.

It wasn't exactly a work of art, and it's certainly far from being my favorite, but for those of us who grew up during the cold war, the reality of something like that possibly happening was something you dealt with everyday.
Regardless of what you might think, you have to agree that Red Dawn kicked some commie ass.

i see your point, but i thought jarhead was good, better than those. lemme refocus on gladiator here - might as well put empire strikes back on the list. personally, i believe ridley scott ruined the war movie in general with his super shaky cam.

I don't think this list is complete without The Big Red One, possibly the best "prepostmodern" war movie made. Catch the expanded version if you can. Fuller did a great job with a budget that was severely reduced by the production company.
Branagh's Henry V was damn good too, though it wouldn't have a chance of winning here.

I think I saw TNT actually try to do that one time. You named the reason it's remained obsucre though...because it's the last pre post modern war movie. It was made out of it's time, but yeah it's a great movie.

the drafthouse on anderson ran that restored print for a while. it was great, but very very few people came out to see it. it was nice to duck in there when i was working and it was dead.

I can think of a lot of other John Wayne movies that should be on this list before the Green Berets...
The problem with that movie is not that it's a pro war movie made in an anti-war era...the main problem with that movie is that it sucks.

That's true...and R Lee Ermey is better in The Boys in Company C than he is in this movie.
All Quiet on the Western on Front, is way to unrealistic and was before the use of method acting to get a nod on this list.
I can think of reasons it won't win...but I can't see excluding it from this list.

Full Metal Jacket is a war movie with a very strong message that was consistent from beginning to end, something Saving Private Ryan could have used. As a matter of fact, your second sentence does a way better job of describing Saving Private Ryan than Full Metal Jacket.

Full Metal Jacket is a war movie with a very strong message that was consistent from beginning to end, something Saving Private Ryan could have used. As a matter of fact, your second sentence does a way better job of describing Saving Private Ryan than Full Metal Jacket.
I understood the message, but I was also looking for entertainment, which it lacked after Joker was dispatched in Vietnam. The climax was so anti-climatic. I was thinking there was an hour left in the movie after they kill the Sniper, but then credits started rolling.

It's not that we don't sleep, it's that the arthritis pain only lets one sleep for about 3 hours at a time
Besides we agreed more than we disagreed on the guy movie list and probably will on the next one of these----tho we may have an argument over whether the glorious original Marshall Dillon The Thing was better or worse than the Wilford Brimley/Goldie Hawn's Squeeze remake
And doing this helps keep our voices out of the various Sturm und Drang choruses regarding the recent (until the last 2 games of the RRT) down tick in Spurs bball fortunes

It rips off the Fighting Sullivans big time, which is based on a true story....and which should be on this list but I knew it was a lost cause.
The Fighting Sullivans however is a Propagandized WWII era movie about 5 real life brothers who all died in service to America during WWII...and they weren't trying to make a statement about the horrors of war.
