That had to be the case Thursday when Gibbs, head coach of the Washington Redskins, talked Cardinals cornerback David Macklin into accepting a one-year deal with the Redskins over three more lucrative deals with other teams. Macklin agreed to a one-year, $760,000 deal Thursday.

The Chiefs, Eagles and Saints had better financial offers on the table, but Macklin agreed to fit within the Redskins' cap restraints and accept a deal for the NFL minimum, along with a $40,000 signing bonus. The Chiefs were offering him two years of security.

Instead, Mackin, 28, decided to compete against three other veteran Redskins cornerbacks for playing time. Macklin had seven starts last season for the Cardinals and played 41 percent of the defensive plays.

New Orleans kicker John Carney, the 19-year veteran who starred as the Saints' placement specialist, was cut loose by the team on Thursday after asking for his release. The move, which makes Carney a free agent, came only two days after the Saints on Tuesday acquired kicker Olindo Mare from the Miami Dolphins for a sixth-round draft choice.

General manager Mickey Loomis and Carney's agent both confirmed the veteran kicker had asked to be released.

"This is something we were sensitive to because he has been an important part of the Saints and the community during his time in New Orleans," said Loomis. "We will always have a lot of respect for John as a person and a player."

Carney would like to continue his career but at his age -- he will turn 43 later this month -- that might be difficult. In acquiring Mare, the Saints added a kicker who is nearly 10 years younger than Carney and is viewed as among the NFL's top field goal kickers.

Last year, ESPN.com reported that the Saints auditioned several kickers the week before the season started, because of concerns over Carney and his age. But they decided to keep Carney and he responded by converting 23 of 25 field goal attempts and all but one of his 47 extra point tries, for 115 points.

It marked the fifth time in six seasons with the Saints that Carney scored 100-plus points. For his career, Carney has 10 seasons of 100 or more points.

The former Notre Dame star, who entered the league in 1988, has converted 413 of 505 field goals and 510 of 517 extra points for 1,749 points. He kicked for Tampa Bay (1988-89), San Diego (1990-2000) and New Orleans (2001-2006).

Also on Thursday, the Saints re-signed restricted free agent defensive tackle Rodney Leisle to a one-year, $850,000 contract. The former UCLA star, chosen by the Saints in the fifth round of the 2004 draft, has appeared in 17 games in three seasons.

The Carolina Panthers won the battle for free agent quarterback David Carr early Friday morning, reaching agreement in principle with the former Houston Texans star on a two-year contract, the financial details of which were not immediately available.

Carr was released by the Texans after Houston acquired Matt Schaub in a trade with Atlanta earlier this offseason. The first player selected overall in the 2002 draft, Carr will serve as the backup to Panthers starter Jake Delhomme, who is coming off an uneven 2006 season.

"It's a case where we were obviously looking for someone to come in [and] back up Jake and the opportunity to get a quarterback the caliber of David in free agency is unique," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney told The Associated Press. "We thought it was a good situation and a good opportunity for us."

Carolina coach John Fox reiterated during the Panthers' courtship of Carr that Delhomme is the unchallenged starter, but the addition of Carr certainly provides an interesting alternative if the incumbent struggles as he did a year ago.

Carr, 27, chose the opportunity with the Panthers over one in Seattle. He visited with Carolina coaches and team officials on Monday and Tuesday, then made a two-day trip to meet with the Seahawks, where he would have also been a backup. After returning from the Seattle visit, Carr counseled with his wife and opted for the deal with Carolina.

"We made it clear and he knows that Jake Delhomme is our starting quarterback," Hurney said to the AP. "I think it was important for him to come to a winning organization and a place where he thinks has a chance to win. He knows that Jake is our starter. Every player wants to play, but he knows the role he's coming into."

The Cleveland Browns also indicated interest in Carr in recent days and the Miami Dolphins considered him as well. The only visits he made, however, were to Carolina and Seattle.

Obviously, the deal with Carolina represents a step back for Carr in his career, but most NFL experts believe the former Fresno State star still possesses immense talent and sorely needed a change of scenery.

In five seasons with the Texans, he completed 1,243 of 2,070 passes for 13,391 yards, with 59 touchdown passes and 65 interceptions, and a passer rating of 75.3. But Carr was the most-sacked quarterback in the league during his tenure with the Texans. Playing behind one of the league's most porous offensive lines, he was sacked a remarkable 249 times.

Carr started 75 games but recorded just a 22-53 record. Between bonuses and base salaries, the Texans paid Carr more than $35 million in five seasons. When they acquired Schaub, whom they immediately named the starter, they initially hoped to be able to trade Carr, but instead released him rather than prolong his time with the franchise.

The move also means the Panthers now have the top two picks from the 2002 draft. Carolina selected defensive end Julius Peppers with No. 2 pick.

Not long ago, NFL safeties were considered more of a luxury than a necessity. Most teams searched for the so-called shutdown corner and tried to make do at safety.

The problem was that opposing offensive coordinators paid close attention to that trend and took full advantage of it.

The Cowboys made Oklahoma safety Roy Williams the eighth overall pick in the 2002 draft because they thought he was the most dynamic defender in college football.

Playing near the line of scrimmage, he disrupted the run and terrorized quarterbacks. Just ask any Sooners fan -- or Longhorns fan for that matter -- about "The Play," and you'll get an earful.

Because the Cowboys still had All-Pro safety Darren Woodson in 2002, they didn't dwell on the fact that Williams had never been asked to do much in pass coverage.

"That's not why we took him," said Larry Lacewell, the director of scouting at the time. "He was always going to be a down safety or basically a fancy linebacker."

The Cowboys had made the decision to copy Tampa Bay's defense, and Williams was supposed to be their John Lynch.

Williams had a strong rookie campaign, but when a back injury forced Woodson to retire three years ago, Williams lost his security blanket. Since 2004, Williams has played opposite the likes of Tony Dixon, Lynn Scott, Keith Davis and Pat Watkins. And in time, head coach Bill Parcells began changing a 4-3 scheme that featured small, speedy linebackers.

The Cowboys don't want Roy Williams to stray too far from the line of scrimmage.

Williams was still one of the most feared players in the game because of his vicious hits, but he became an easy mark for big plays in the passing game.

"We rushed his learning curve too much," Lacewell said. "We lost Woodson and Roy wasn't getting any help back there."

That's why Williams has become new head coach Wade Phillips' first major renovation project. Even before he hired Phillips, owner-general manager Jerry Jones talked about how the club had to find a better way to utilize Williams, who was exposed on almost a weekly basis in 2006.

The Cowboys signed former Seahawks safety Ken Hamlin in free agency because they were tired of being held hostage by the position. Hamlin isn't a pure cover safety, but his knowledge of the game and experience should give Williams more freedom to make plays.

One of the best safeties to ever play for the Cowboys, Charlie Waters, thinks the arrival of Hamlin might be exactly what Williams needs. Waters and free safety Cliff Harris were a big reason for the Cowboys' success in the 1970s.

"Safeties are as good as the guy next to them," Waters said. "If you have complete trust in the other guy, you feel the freedom to make plays."

People within the organization say Williams wore down toward the end of last season, and it probably didn't help that he was carrying too much weight. Phillips told me recently that he plans to play Williams much closer to the line of scrimmage and wants to use him in several blitz packages.

The Cowboys are now hoping he can be the next Troy Polamalu, who has become one of the most versatile defenders in the league for the Steelers.

A player taken 16 spots after Williams in the 2002 draft, the Ravens' Ed Reed, has had a better career to this point. Reed and Polamalu have helped restore prestige to the position. Safeties LaRon Landry (LSU), Reggie Nelson (Florida), Michael Griffin (Texas) and Brandon Meriweather (Miami) all could be taken in the first round of the draft later this month.

And that's after a 2006 draft that saw two safeties, Oakland's Michael Huff and Buffalo's Donte Whitner, go in the first 10 picks.

Safeties used to sit out the first round entirely, but they're showing up again because so many offenses are using one-back formations designed to spread out defenses.

Basically, teams need at least one of their safeties to have the coverage skills of a cornerback and still be able to support the run.

Jones rewarded Williams with a $12 million signing bonus and long-term extension before last season, so you can't blame him for wanting to see more return on his investment.

When Williams is asked to line up 20 yards away from the line of scrimmage, he's barely more than an average player. Phillips will try to simplify the game for Williams and let him create havoc near the line of scrimmage.

Though they might not admit it publicly, coaches such as the Saints' Sean Payton built game plans around exposing Williams in coverage. Phillips and defensive coordinator Brian Stewart must find a way to limit that exposure.

The fact that Williams has only 2½ sacks over the past three seasons speaks to how out of place he's been.

Williams is at his best when he simply allows his instincts to take over, and with Phillips and Hamlin on the scene, that shouldn't be a problem.

Devin Hester: Maximum Speed

It's long been rumored, it's been hinted at, it's been lobbied for, and it's been perennially denied -- but now, an NFL player has finally achieved the near-impossible: meriting a perfect 100 in one of Madden NFL's proprietary skills ratings.

Chicago return man Devin Hester has attained perfection in the "Speed" category, gaining the maximum 100 rating in the upcoming Madden NFL 08 for his amazing wheels. Hester, who set an NFL single-season record with six returns for touchdowns in his rookie campaign of 2006, has been known as the "Windy City Flyer" for his unique ability to turn on the afterburners and bring a kick back for six points. His 100 rating tops the previous high of 99, given to such players as Deion Sanders, Randy Moss, Charles Woodson, and a couple others.

Hester racked up his six scores on three punt returns, two kick returns and an incredible 108-yard return of a missed field goal attempt against the New York Giants. Additionally, he took the opening kickoff of Super Bowl XLI 92 yards for a score, making him the first player ever to open the Super Bowl with a touchdown on the very first kick.

Hester has been known to have been lobbying members of the Madden NFL 08 development team for the top speed rating. He's certainly deserving of the honor; after all, there's pure speed and then there's football speed, which measures how fast a player can go weighed down with pads and equipment while 11 men on the other team try to bring him down. As he showed many times during his breakout rookie season, Hester's football speed is top-notch, and now Madden NFL 08 will pay him the ultimate respect by giving him a perfect rating in that category.

"That's just about the best thing you could have told me," Hester said with a huge smile, when informed of his new Speed rating. "It's an honor -- I don't know what to say, really."

How does he feel about being rated higher than his friend and mentor "Neon" Deion Sanders, who was once timed at 4.19 in the forty-yard dash and returned a kick or two in his day? "Deion has told me a bunch of times that I was as fast as he was," Hester replied diplomatically.

As fast as he is, the return man -- who also plays cornerback for the Bears -- still has some room for improvement in other areas, but like most NFL players that also play Madden, when we inquired about some of his other ratings, he was less than satisfied. "Well, since you're asking, my defensive awareness was low -- too low," he said, "and I definitely need to break more tackles. On a few of my returns last year I feel like I showed what I can do in that category."

Hester will just have to live with those "subpar" ratings for now, and really, the Breaking Tackles rating may not mean much in the end -- with a 100 Speed rating, who is going to catch him in the first place?

NEW YORK -- Ricky Williams, the former NFL star who played in Canada last season after being suspended for a year for substance abuse, has applied for reinstatement.

Williams' agent, Leigh Steinberg, said the running back, who will turn 30 in May, had sent a letter asking that he be allowed to return to the Miami Dolphins.

The NFL confirmed that Williams had sought reinstatement, for which he will be eligible after April 27, when he will have been suspended for a year. Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said the team had no comment because Williams is not yet eligible for reinstatement.

Williams, a former Heisman Trophy winner at Texas, was originally drafted by New Orleans when then-coach Mike Ditka gave up all his picks in the 1999 draft to get his rights. He was traded to Miami for two first-round draft picks after the 2001 season and rushed for 1,853 yards for the Dolphins in 2002 and 1,372 the next season.

But he abruptly retired shortly before training camp in 2004, then returned in 2005 to back up rookie Ronnie Brown. Williams rushed for 743 yards and a 4.4 yard average that year.

The suspension, handed down last year by former commissioner Paul Tagliabue, was Williams' fourth.

Williams' previous positive drug tests were for marijuana, which he acknowledged using. The latest test apparently involved a substance other than marijuana and may have been related to his interest in holistic medicine.

Steinberg said Williams has been teaching yoga in California since returning from Canada last December.

"He's told me that his interest in eastern philosophy has overcome his desire for mind-altering substances and has given him another outlet," Steinberg said. "He's in outstanding shape and he hasn't taken a lot of hits for a running back. I think he's still at the top of his game."

During the 2005 season, Williams laughingly described himself as weird and compared his career to a roller coaster. But he also dispelled his reputation as an aloof, selfish pothead, winning praise from teammates and winning the south Florida media's annual postseason Good Guy Award, given to the player most cooperative with reporters.

Williams has gained 7,097 yards in 1,757 carries during his NFL career and rushed for 47 touchdowns.

Last season with Toronto in the CFL, he ran for 526 yards on 109 carries and caught 19 passes for 127 yards. He missed two months because of a broken arm.

Harrington will replace Matt Schaub as Michael Vick's backup in Atlanta. Schaub signed a six-year, $48 million deal with the Houston Texans last month.

Last season, Harrington played in 11 games for the Miami Dolphins. He passed for 2,236 yards along with 12 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Before joining Miami, Harrington played four seasons with Detroit. The former University of Oregon standout was the third overall pick of the Lions in the 2002 NFL draft.

Shanahan signs three-year extension to stay in DenverESPN.com news services

DENVER -- Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan signed a three-year contract extension, keeping him in Denver through the 2011 season, the team said Monday.

Shanahan was already the NFL's second longest-tenured coach with the same franchise, behind only Tennessee's Jeff Fisher, and the new deal will further extend his stay. He also holds the title of executive vice president and has near-absolute control of all football-related issues in the franchise.

Financial details of the extension were not available. Shanahan is believed to already have been one of the NFL's highest paid coaches, with a salary likely in excess of $5 million.

Negotiations had been ongoing during the offseason and both Shanahan and owner Pat Bowlen acknowledged during the recent NFL meetings in Phoenix that an extension was likely to be completed before the start of the regular season.

Shanahan, 54, led Denver to Super Bowl victories in 1997 and 1998. Since becoming head coach in January 1995, he has led the Broncos to nine playoff appearances and a 123-69 regular season record.

His victory total with Denver is 11th-best by one coach with one team in NFL history.

Shanahan was head coach of the Los Angeles Raiders from 1988-89 but has spent 20 years with Denver. He joined the team in 1984 and has served as wide receivers coach, quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.

ATLANTA -- Veteran defensive back Kevin Mathis, who missed the final two months of the 2006 season with the second serious neck injury of his career, was released on Monday by the Atlanta Falcons in a move that had been anticipated.

It is not yet known if Mathis, 32, will attempt to continue his career with another team. Sources said he would have had trouble passing his physical examination with the Falcons, who begin a mandatory, three-day minicamp on Tuesday morning.

Mathis suffered a neck injury last Nov. 5 when his head collided with the knee of Detroit return specialist Eddie Drummond on the opening kickoff of the Falcons' road game with the Lions. He was immobilized on a back board and taken from the field on a cart.

It marked the second serious neck injury for Mathis, a 10-year veteran known for his hard-hitting, kamikaze-type style. In 2001, while playing as a nickel back for the New Orleans Saints, he sustained a cervical spine injury late in the season, and it was felt at the time that the injury might end his career.

He returned the following season, signing with the Falcons, and played in 11 games.

Mathis missed the entire 2005 campaign with a knee injury suffered in the preseason. Only twice in 10 years has Mathis been able to play an entire 16-game schedule.

The former Texas A&M-Commerce standout, originally signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted college free agent in 1997, has appeared in 115 games, with 55 starts.

In stints with the Cowboys (1997-99), Saints (2000-2001) and Falcons (2002-2006), splitting his time between cornerback and safety, Mathis has 382 tackles, 11 interceptions, 32 passes defensed and four sacks.

Mathis had two years remaining on his contract and was scheduled to earn base salaries of $900,000 for 2007 and $1.035 million for 2008.

Financial details of the extension were not yet available, but it is likely the guarantees in the new deal total at least $10 million. The extension culminates months of discussions between the two sides, with the negotiations having been ratcheted up in recent days.

Without the extension, Barnett, the team's first-round choice in the 2003 draft, would have been set to enter the final year of his rookie contract, with a scheduled base salary of $1.95 million. Had he played out the original contract, Barnett, 25, would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency next spring, and would have been one of the most coveted players in the market.

Barnett acknowledged earlier in the offseason that he wrestled with the notion of just playing under his current contract, and testing free agency, but conceded his priority was to remain with the Packers organization.

The former Oregon State standout has been a starter since the day he was drafted, and has appeared in all but two games in four seasons, all 62 of them as the Green Bay starting middle linebacker. There are some personnel people in the league who feel Barnett is actually better suited to the weakside linebacker position, but there is no denying that he has prospered in the middle, where the Packers probably will keep him.

He is valuable to a Green Bay defense that returns all 11 starters in 2007, not just because of his physical skills-set, but because of his knowledge of the overall scheme. As evidenced by his well-rounded statistics, Barnett is a three-down defender who, unlike most middle linebackers, does not have to leave the field in passing situations.

Barnett has 631 career tackles and led the team in that category each of his first three seasons before finishing second to then-rookie A.J. Hawk in 2006. Barnett also has eight sacks, seven interceptions, 29 passes defensed, one forced fumble and six recoveries.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell handed out the first suspensions under his discipline policy, banning Adam "Pacman" Jones for the entire 2007 season and Chris Henry for eight regular-season games.

The two players are suspended without pay for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy and engaging in conduct detrimental to the league on numerous occasions, the NFL announced.

After they serve their suspensions, each player must apply for reinstatement.

"We must protect the integrity of the NFL," Goodell said. "The highest standards of conduct must be met by everyone in the NFL because it is a privilege to represent the NFL, not a right. Moon arrested in Seattle suburb for drunken drivingAssociated Press

KIRKLAND, Wash. -- Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon was arrested for investigation of drunken driving after a trooper stopped him for allegedly speeding, the State Patrol said.

Moon, 50, was stopped at about 2 a.m. Friday in downtown Kirkland, State Patrol Trooper Courtney Stewart said Tuesday.

The former University of Washington and Seattle Seahawks quarterback was arrested and taken to the Kirkland Police Department for processing, and was later released. His vehicle was impounded, Stewart said.

The case has been forwarded to King County prosecutors for possible criminal charges, Stewart said, adding that the patrol is not allowed to release the details of Moon's blood-alcohol level test.

Moon played 17 seasons and 208 games in the NFL with the Houston Oilers, Minnesota Vikings, Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs. When he retired after the 2001 season, Moon ranked third in passing attempts, completions, yardage and total offense.

He entered the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, in August, and has been an analyst on Seahawks' radio broadcasts for the past three seasons.

In 1978, Moon led Washington to a 27-20 Rose Bowl victory over Michigan. Before moving to the NFL in 1984, Moon led the Canadian Football League's Edmonton Eskimos to five straight Grey Cup victories.

ATLANTA -- For the second time in two years, Atlanta Falcons star tight end Alge Crumpler has undergone offseason surgery that will force him to miss some time in the team's conditioning program.

The team announced Tuesday that Crumpler, a four-time Pro Bowl performer and the club's most consistent receiver for much of his six-year career, underwent arthroscopic surgery last Friday to clean debris from his left knee. Crumpler has been forced to contend with swelling and pain in the left knee for the past two seasons.

Last summer, Crumpler had offseason surgery on his left shoulder, and Falcons officials came under fire when they did not divulge the procedure until just before training camp.

Given the timing of the knee surgery, Crumpler was not able to participate in Tuesday's initial mandatory minicamp workout under first-year head coach Bobby Petrino and almost certainly will miss all three days of the session. There is no timetable yet for his return to the field, but it is believed Crumpler will be recovered well in advance of training camp.

Crumpler, 29, has been named to the NFC Pro Bowl squad in each of the last four years and has led the Falcons in receptions for three straight seasons. The former North Carolina star, a second-round pick in 2001, had 56 catches for 780 yards and eight touchdowns in 2006, and is clearly the receiver quarterback Michael Vick trusts the most.

In 94 career games, including 83 starts, Crumpler has 274 receptions for 3,768 yards and 30 touchdowns. Despite being slowed at times by injuries and at times being forced to curtail his practice time, the durable Crumpler has missed only two games in six seasons.

The other tight ends on the roster are Dwayne Blakley, Daniel Fells and Eric Beverly.

In an unrelated development, defensive end Grady Jackson, who is suing the Falcons for defamation and invasion of privacy claiming that club officials leaked to some media outlets reports that he had failed a physical exam, was not on hand for Tuesday's practice. Jackson, who is under contract but would like to have his deal upgraded after a strong 2006 season in which he had 33 tackles, can be fined for his absence.

The NFL has announced changes in the educational and discipline parts of the personal conduct policy. The educational changes include a mandatory year-round rookie orientation for all clubs, a mandatory annual life-skills program for all teams, a mandatory briefing for all players from the local law enforcement, a program to enhance drunk driving laws implemented by all teams, and expanded counseling and treatment programs. The disciplinary changes mean club and league employees are held to a higher standard than the players. Policy changes include larger fines and longer suspensions for violators as well as aggressive discipline for repeat violators even if their cases have not been resolved. Also, violators have to comply fully with all programs before returning to active status, and teams will be subject to discipline if one of their employees violate the policy.

Updating a previous item, Mike Sando, of the Tacoma News Tribune, reports former NFL QB Warren Moon was arrested last week on suspicion of DUI. State records show Washington State Patrol trooper Joe Gannon measured Moon's blood-alcohol level at .068 percent and .067 percent April 6. Both reading are below the .08 legal limit in the state of Washington. The prosecutor's office has not announced if it will file charges. Charges can still be filed even with both tests under the legal limit. The state could try to show that the person was impaired in a manner that made it unsafe for them to drive.

McCown's agent looking for trade from LionsAssociated Press

DETROIT -- Josh McCown's agent said Wednesday he is hoping the Detroit Lions will find a new home for their backup quarterback.

"Josh sees himself as a starting quarterback, and I agree with him," Michael McCartney said. "We hope before draft day that something works out beneficial to Josh and the Lions."

McCown signed a two-year contract a year ago after starting 22 games over the previous three seasons in Arizona. He did not throw a pass for the Lions, but was used sparingly as a receiver.

Jon Kitna started every game for the Lions last season, and coach Rod Marinelli has said Kitna again would be his No. 1 quarterback in 2007.

Marinelli told reporters on Tuesday that he only would talk about players attending the organized team activity at the practice facility in Allen Park. McCown and receiver Mike Williams, whose future with the team is in doubt, did not attend the workouts.

A message seeking comment was left for Williams' agent, Mitch Frankel, on Wednesday.

Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter told ESPN on Wednesday that he hopes to get past his fight with Cincinnati Bengals left tackle Levi Jones.

"I wish it never would have happened," Porter said. "I don't know how Levi feels, but the faster we can get this behind us, [the better]."

Jones told the Cincinnati Enquirer last week that during an altercation in a Las Vegas casino March 18, he was jumped by six other men from behind before Porter hit him. Porter was cited by police for misdemeanor battery and released. Police said the players, rivals on the field, exchanged trash talk at a casino blackjack table before the fracas.

"[Porter] got my attention from the front and wouldn't get near me until the six guys jumped me from behind, [then] he took part," Jones told the Enquirer. "What started everything was the dude hit me from behind. From then on, I had to protect myself. I was attacked by seven guys. I don't know what man is going to withstand that, especially with an NFL player involved.

"It was like that, it was problematic for me and my family, especially when the true story wasn't out there," Jones told the newspaper. "The particulars about how everything went down, I mean, ESPN, all they wanted to report was Joey Porter hit me in the face."

Porter told ESPN he was in Las Vegas to celebrate his mother's 50th birthday and would like to apologize to Jones.

"I don't mind calling him. If he truly believes, if he feels like I was wrong, I'm sorry," Porter said. "I can apologize. I am reaching out now."

The Bengals play at Miami in the teams' regular-season finale Dec. 30. Jones has previously said he isn't concerned with facing Porter on the field, but he didn't say if he would file a civil suit.

"We'll see how it plays out," he said.

"At the end of the day, none of us is going to get anything good out of this," he told the Enquirer.

The Dolphins have seven days to match the offer. If they don't, the Rams would have to give the Dolphins a seventh-round pick. That would give the Dolphins 10 draft choices in the 2007 draft, a net gain of four from the end of the season. They went into the offseason with only six draft choices.

They picked up a second- and a seventh-round choice for wide receiver Wes Welker. They got a sixth-round choice last week in a trade with the Saints for kicker Olinda Mare. They had a trade for a sixth-round choice with the Broncos for defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson voided when he failed to report in time for a physical.

Turk, 36, is an unrestricted free agent. He had been discussing a contract with the team but talks were going nowhere.

Unrestricted free agent Cooper Carlisle, one of the few starting-caliber offensive linemen still available in the veteran unrestricted free agent talent pool, has reached a contract agreement with the Oakland Raiders.

CarlisleCarlisle, 29, played the first seven years of his career with the Denver Broncos. The Raiders saw the chance to get a quality player from a division rival as a bit of a coup. Carlisle will sign a two-year contract, the financial details of which were not yet available.

With 38 career starts, including 16 starts at right guard in each of the last two seasons, Carlisle figures to quickly challenge for a job in the Oakland lineup. The Raiders are revamping their offensive line after surrendering a league-worst 72 sacks in 2006, and are transitioning to a zone-blocking scheme under first-year head coach Lane Kiffin.

For his entire Denver tenure, Carlisle played in the zone-blocking scheme, which calls for smaller, quicker offensive linemen. His familiarity with the blocking system system should give Carlisle an edge in competing for a starting job and should help speed implementation of the new style in Oakland.

Over the last few weeks, Carlisle has been one of the league's most popular and well-traveled players in the second wave of free agency. He visited with officials from Seattle, Houston and Tampa Bay before meeting Wednesday with the Raiders. Once he felt comfortable with the staff and the direction of the team, he agreed to the two-year deal.

Denver is expected to elevate second-year veteran Chris Kuper or former New Orleans starter Montrae Holland, who was signed as an unrestricted free agent last month, into the vacancy created by Carlisle's departure. Carlisle joins Jeremy Newberry and Cornell Green as veteran linemen added by the Raiders in free agency.

A fourth-round choice of the Broncos in the 2000 draft, Carlisle began his career playing mostly at tackle before the former University of Florida star settled in at guard. He has appeared in 95 games.

Seeking to add veteran leadership to a very young wide receiver contingent, the New Orleans Saints on Thursday night signed unrestricted free agent David Patten, released earlier in the spring by the Washington Redskins, to a one-year contract.

The much-traveled 10-year veteran, who was part of three Super Bowl championship teams during his tenure with the New England Patriots, will try to resurrect a career that has slumped in recent seasons. Patten caught just one pass for the Redskins in 2006 and had only 22 receptions in 2005.

He became expendable when he fell behind three younger wide receivers on the depth chart and his salary became too exorbitant for the Redskins to carry.

In New Orleans, Patten will be counted on in part to lend guidance to one of the NFL's youngest receiver corps. The Saints' top three wideouts total only six years of league tenure and the departure of Joe Horn, who was released early in the spring and then subsequently signed with division rival Atlanta, took the most experienced veteran away from the unit.

"We believe that his track record as a proven winner, and his veteran leadership on and off the field will be a benefit to our team," general manager Mickey Loomis said.

Patten recently visited with New England officials, but it is not known if he was offered a contract. The Saints have considered a number of other longtime veteran wide receivers, and quarterback Drew Brees at one point recommended the team think about adding Keenan McCardell, his former teammate in San Diego.

Patten, 32, has 259 career receptions for 3,761 yards and 20 touchdowns, He has posted 35 or more catches four times and his best seasons came with the Patriots in 2001-02, when he averaged 56 receptions and 786.5 yards while scoring nine touchdowns. At one point, the former Western Carolina star was regarded as one of the fastest players in the league. He still runs well, but he has clearly lost a step in the last few years.

Originally signed by the Giants as an undrafted free agent, Patten has spent time with New York (1997-99), Cleveland (2000), New England (2001-04) and Washington (2005-06). He has appeared in 126 games and started 65 of them.

Financial details of the one-year contract that Patten signed were not yet available, but it is likely for the minimum base salary.

Denver Broncos linebacker Al Wilson scheduled a news conference Friday to announce he is being released by the Denver Broncos after eight seasons, sources said.

Wilson called a 4 p.m. ET meeting with the media in Denver to discuss his future, which will not include the Broncos, the team that made him a No. 1 draft choice in 1999 and allowed him to grow into the leadership role on playoff caliber defenses.

Wilson leaves the Broncos as a four-time Pro Bowl player and one of the top defenders in franchise history.

Last month, the Broncos tried to trade him to the New York Giants for a third-round choice. That trade didn't happen because he failed a physical. He had back problems last year along with a thumb injury. Wilson's rights returned to the Broncos, who were, at the time, seemingly willing to keep him on the roster.

With a $5.2 million salary and a $600,000 roster bonus, Wilson didn't fit into the Broncos salary cap after a busy offseason. His release will save the Broncos $1.63 million.

Wilson wanted to hold a press conference to thank the Broncos and the fans for their support through his NFL career.

Continuing to stress depth and versatility on defense, the Arizona Cardinals signed a trio of much-traveled unrestricted free agents on Friday, adding linemen Rodney Bailey and Joe Tafoya and cornerback Ralph Brown.

All three players signed one-year contracts for the league minimum base salaries mandated by their respective tenures. The acquisitions came as the Cardinals began their initial three-day minicamp under first-year coach Ken Whisenhunt.

The session will include the installation of some 3-4 principles into the Arizona defense. All three new players could make contributions as the Cardinals enact those changes.

Bailey and Tafoya are the latest additions to a defensive line that earlier this week welcomed unrestricted free agent Ross Kolodziej, who can play end or tackle. Bailey is a player familiar to Whisenhunt because of his years spent with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

A solid pass-rusher when healthy and a defender who has played almost exclusively in a 3-4 defense during his six seasons in the league, Bailey, 27, has appeared in 68 games. Mostly an end, the former Ohio State standout can also slide inside on passing downs and play some snaps at tackle. He has 64 tackles, 9½ sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and four passes defended in his career.

Originally a sixth-round choice of the Steelers in the 2001 draft, Bailey has also spent time with the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. He appeared in 12 games in 2006.

Tafoya, 28, played in 13 games with the Seahawks in 2006 and had three tackles on defense and nine tackles on special teams. The former University of Arizona standout was a seventh-round choice of the New York Giants in 2001 and has also played with Tampa Bay and Atlanta. In 63 appearances, he has 36 tackles, 1½ sacks and one forced fumble. He is viewed mostly as a tackle.

Brown is a longtime nickel defender who can play cornerback and safety and who has served stints with the Giants (2002-2003), Vikings (2004-2005) and Vikings (2006). He was the Giants' fifth-round choice in the 2000 draft, and the former Nebraska star has appeared in 81 games, with 13 starts, and has 140 tackles, three interceptions and 14 passes defended.

The 30-year-old Brown figures to vie for playing time in nickel situations and on special teams. The Cardinals recently lost veteran cornerback David Macklin as an unrestricted free agent, and Brown could be a candidate to fill his spot as a No. 3 corner.

In addition to the acquisitions, the Cardinals signed restricted free agent center Nick Leckey, who started 11 games for Arizona in 2006, to a one-year contract. Leckey, who likely will lose his starting job to unrestricted free agent acquisition Al Johnson, signed away from the Dallas Cowboys, signed the one-year qualifying offer for $1.3 million. Unless he signs and extension, the former Kansas State star, a sixth-round choice of the Cardinals in 2004, will be eligible for unrestricted free agency next spring.

The Miami Dolphins on Friday created some depth and competition on their offensive line, signing unrestricted free agent tackle Mike Rosenthal to a one-year, $760,000 contract.

An eight-year veteran, Rosenthal played for the Minnesota Vikings the past four seasons, but he was released March 1. He figures to compete for the starting right tackle spot, assuming the team follows through on its plan to switch Vernon Carey to left tackle as it reshapes its offensive line under first-year head coach Cam Cameron.

Rosenthal, 29, participated Friday in the team's initial minicamp session under Cameron.

The former Notre Dame standout has appeared in 89 games and started in 58 of them. He logged 15 starts for the Vikings over the past two years. Rosenthal has played left guard and right tackle during his career and started 12 or more games in three seasons. He started 16 games each in 2002, with the New York Giants, and in 2003 with Minnesota.

Known mostly as a power blocker, Rosenthal, a fifth-round choice of the Giants in the 1999 draft, was also sought by the Tampa Bay Bucs after Minnesota released him. His contract for 2007 includes a $40,000 signing bonus.

Miami also re-signed unrestricted free agent safety Travares Tillman, who appeared in 30 games for the Dolphins over the last two seasons, on Friday. A seven-year veteran, Tillman signed a one-year contract that includes a base salary of $720,000.

Tillman, 29, previously played for Buffalo (2000-02) and Carolina (2003-04). He has 17 starts in his two seasons in Miami but lost the No. 1 job at strong safety to Yeremiah Bell halfway through the 2006 campaign. His stint with the Dolphins includes 96 tackles, three interceptions and three passes defensed.

The former Georgia Tech safety has 175 career tackles, four interceptions and 10 passes defensed for his career. He is expected to serve as a backup and on special teams in 2006.

The New York Giants stabilized their quarterback depth chart Friday, with ESPN.com learning that the team has reached a contract agreement with unrestricted free agent Anthony Wright, who is expected to serve as the primary backup to Eli Manning.

An eight-year veteran, Wright will officially sign a two-year contract early next week. Financial details were not immediately available. Wright appeared in four games with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2006, completing all three pass attempts.

The Giants will be Wright's fifth team.

Wright, 31, will represent an upgrade over Tim Hasselbeck and Jared Lorenzen, the other quarterbacks on the New York depth chart. Neither backup registered a single pass attempt in 2006, and Wright, a proven commodity, has appeared in 28 career contests.

The Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers also demonstrated interest in Wright during the free agency period, and he likely could have returned to Cincinnati for another season.

A former South Carolina star, Wright has always been blessed with a strong, live arm and good movement skills. He has completed 331 of 598 passes in his career for 3,578 yards, with 20 touchdown passes, 25 interceptions, and an efficiency rating of 66.9. Wright has run 79 times for 222 yards.

Twice in his career, in 2003 and 2005, both times with the Baltimore Ravens, he has logged seven starts in a season.

Wright originally entered the league with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1999, earning a roster spot as an undrafted college free agent. He has played in Pittsburgh (1999), Dallas (2000-01), Baltimore (2002-05) and Cincinnati (2006) in the past and has 19 career starts.

So good, apparently, that the Eagles paid him twice. Or at least they anted up twice on the $3 million roster bonus that Westbrook was due.

Team officials have confirmed that, because of an accounting error, Westbrook was twice awarded a $3 million roster bonus for 2006 that was part of the five-year, $25 million contract extension the five-year veteran signed in November 2005. Westbrook reportedly has acknowledged the overage and agreed to repay the money.

But because the Eagles have yet to be reimbursed, which could negatively impact on the Eagles' salary cap status, the team has been forced to file a grievance with the league office seeking repayment. A team official stressed there was no acrimony between the Eagles and their star tailback, that repayment is anticipated, and that the grievance was a technicality aimed at avoiding any cap implications.

Westbrook's agent could not be reached for comment on the extra bonus, which was first reported on Friday evening by ComcastSportsNet.com. It is not clear when, or how, the overage was discovered by the Eagles and Westbrook. One potential complication to the reimbursement is that Westbrook has already paid taxes on the extra $3 million.

Such an accounting gaffe is unusual for any NFL team, but especially for the Eagles, who are among the league's premier franchises in terms of salary cap management.

As of Saturday, the league had not charged the accounting error to the Eagles' salary cap. The team remains about $10 million under the NFL spending limit of $109 million for '07.

Westbrook, 27, registered a career season in 2006. On the ground, he posted career highs in carries (240) and yards (1,217), and tied his career best with seven touchdowns. He also had a career-high 77 receptions for 699 yards and four touchdowns.

A third-round pick in the 2002 draft, Westbrook has emerged as one of the NFL's most versatile performers and the centerpiece of the Philadelphia offense. In 70 games, including 49 starts, the former Villanova star has rushed for 3,452 yards and 20 touchdowns on 736 carries, and has 257 catches for 2,436 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Ex-landlord, would-be agent won't sue Bush, familyESPN.com news services

Reggie Bush's would-be agent and former landlord to Bush's parents has settled with the New Orleans Saints star and his family, according to media reports.

The San Diego Union-Tribune and Yahoo Sports reported Friday that Michael Michaels, who had threatened to sue, had settled with Bush and his family. Yahoo reported that according to sources, the settlement was worth between $200,000 and $300,000.

Michaels has alleged that Bush's parents lived rent-free in his San Diego-area house for a year while Bush was playing at USC. He has said the arrangement came with an understanding that Bush would be the key figure in New Era Sports & Entertainment, a fledgling marketing agency co-founded by Michaels and Lloyd Lake.

Bush instead signed with marketing agent Mike Ornstein and agent Joel Segal. Michaels and Lake claimed to be out $300,000, including $100,000 in cash disbursements to the Bush family, and threatened to sue.

Michaels has now decided not to pursue legal action.

"I was instructed not to proceed," Michaels' attorney, Jordan Cohen, told The Associated Press on Friday. "I'm not commenting any further."

The allegations raised questions about whether Bush had viloated NCAA rules by accepting improper benefits while playing at USC. A finding that he had done so could lead to USC forfeiting games and put Bush's Heisman Trophy in jeopardy.

Bush's attorney, David Cornwell, could not be reached for comment, according to multiple media outlets reporting the story.

Lake's attorney, Brian Watkins, has said for a year that he planned to sue Bush. He said Friday that he hasn't done so yet because of "a variety of factors."

The NCAA has been investigating the possibility that Bush received improper benefits while at USC.

The NCAA and the Pacific 10 Conference are continuing their probe despite the settlement, officials of both organizations told the Los Angeles Times.

"This has not gone away by any means," Ron Barker, the Pac-10's associate commissioner of governance and enforcement, told the Times.

Furthermore, Bob DeMartino, a New Jersey memorabelia dealer, told the Times he had recently spoken with NCAA investigators. "I don't think it's going to die out, based on my conversation with the NCAA," he said. Last year, DeMartino told Yahoo Sports that Bush and his family had received cash and benefits from Ornstein while Bush was still at USC.

But Yahoo reported that according to two sources, Michaels' settlement with Bush includes a confidentiality clause which will prevent Michaels from talking with the NCAA.

In a statement from Rachel Newman Baker, the NCAA director of agent, gambling and amateurism activities, the NCAA acknowledged it was aware of the settlement between the Bush family and Michaels.

"We continue our efforts to obtain cooperation from those involved with the case, including Reggie Bush and his family," Baker said in the statement. "Hopefully, the settlement agreement will encourage individuals who previously refused to cooperate due to concerns about potential litigation to now come forward with information that may assist with our ongoing investigation."

Having watched their offense sputter under the direction of a pair of journeymen veterans during a three-day weekend minicamp that concluded on Sunday, the Miami Dolphins are expected this week to ramp up their efforts to complete a much-discussed trade for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Trent Green.

Citing unnamed sources, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that the trade could be completed this week, which would likely lead to the release of Daunte Culpepper, who was unable to participate in the minicamp as he continues recovering from knee surgery. League sources told ESPN.com that officials from the Dolphins and Chiefs, who have been talking about the trade for more than a month, recently resumed negotiations.

The teams are said to have moved closer to agreeing on compensation in the proposed deal. Kansas City has been seeking a second-round draft choice for Green, while Miami officials would prefer to surrender a late-round selection. The aim is to consummate a trade before the April 28-29 draft.

In the absence of Culpepper, the Dolphins relied on quarterbacks Cleo Lemon and Gibran Hamdan, untested players with one regular season start between them, in the weekend's initial minicamp under first year coach Cam Cameron. Not surprisingly, both the players struggled to move the offense.

Even before the minicamp, the Dolphins had renewed their pursuit of Green, but the poor performance of the offense over the weekend may have added further impetus to complete a trade that would provide Miami a proven starter.

Green, 36, has been deemed expendable by the Chiefs, who plan to allow veteran Damon Huard and second-year pro Brodie Croyle to compete in training camp for the starting job. A 14-year veteran, Green has six times thrown for 3,000-plus yards in a season and has three seasons of 4,000 or more yards. He has completed 2,143 of 3,527 passes for 26,963 yards, with 157 touchdown passes and 101 interceptions in 112 games, including 107 starts.

Until last season, Green had proven incredibly durable, and had started every game for the Chiefs since Kansas City acquired him in a 2001 trade. But Green suffered a severe head injury in the 2006 season opener, when he was hit outside the pocket by Cincinnati end Robert Geathers, and he started only eight contests.

There have been other teams which have indicated an interest in Green, the Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns among them, but the veteran has emphasized that his preference is to be traded to Miami, where he would be reunited with Cameron, his former quarterbacks coach with the Washington Redskins from 1995-96.

Green controls his fate to some extent, since any team that acquires him will want him to restructure a contract that has three seasons remaining, at base salaries of $7.2 million (2007), $7.7 million (2008) and $9.2 million (2009). The Dolphins and Green's agent have already agreed on the key parameters of a contract that addresses the needs of both sides.

The potential acquisition of Green, coupled with his own battle to come back from the catastrophic right knee injury he suffered in October 2005, an injury in which he tore three of the four ligaments, has left Culpepper in limbo. The eight-year veteran was supposed to answer the Dolphins' long standing quarterback issues when the club acquired him from Minnesota last spring.

But Culpepper appeared in only four games before undergoing a second surgery to repair his knee. He revealed over the weekend that the second surgery, which was designed to address scar tissue in the knee, was more serious than anyone originally divulged, and called for a rehabilitation period of 4-6 months.

There is no timetable for the return of Culpepper, 30, who is scheduled to earn a base salary of $5.5 million in 2007. It's conceivable that the Dolphins will have completed a trade for Green, and jettisoned Culpepper, before he is actually ready to return to the field.

Beyond the discussions aimed at adding Green, the Dolphins have explored other options, including the possibility of investing a high round draft choice in a quarterback. Cameron and general manager Randy Mueller have met with or auditioned each of the top four quarterback prospects in this year's draft.

Offensive guard Will Shields of the Kansas City Chiefs, one of the NFL's most celebrated blockers of this era on the field and most honored philanthropists off it, has decided to retire from the NFL after 14 seasons.

A 12-time Pro Bowl performer and certain candidate for Hall of Fame honors, Shields made the announcement of his retirement on his Web site on Sunday evening.

"The love for the game never decreased but, as the years passed, the physical requirements of the game became harder to fulfill each and every day," Shields wrote on the site. "If it was up to me I would play football forever but, as we all know, that is unrealistic."

Shields, 35, has been a fixture for the Chiefs at right guard and a leader in the Kansas City community since the team selected the former Nebraska star in the third round of the 1993 draft. He is the longest-tenured player on the Kansas City roster and his 224 appearances and 223 starts are franchise records.

In 14 seasons, Shields never missed a game, and he failed to start only one contest, his first regular-season outing, as a rookie in 1993. He is one of only four NFL players since the merger in 1970 to start more than 200 straight games.

Shields has appeared in 12 straight Pro Bowl games and his 224 regular-season games are more than any of the seven modern-era guards currently in the Hall of Fame.

As notable an impact as Shields has made on the field, where he is regarded as one of the premier in-line blockers in modern league history, his accomplishments outside of football are just as laudable.

As a rookie, Shields and his wife, Senia, established the "Will to Succeed Foundation." The foundation's Web site defines its purpose as "inspiring, guiding and improving the lives of abused, battered and neglected women and children."

The foundation, and numerous other charitable efforts helped earn Shields the NFL's prestigious Walter Payton Man of the Year honor in 2003. Shields and his wife have garnered considerable recognition in other quarters as well for the lives they have affected.

Shields has flirted with the notion of retirement in the past, notably a year ago, and he sat out most of the Chiefs' offseason conditioning program as he deliberated his future. After much thought, Shields returned to the team and enjoyed another standout season.

He has three seasons remaining on his contract, at base salaries of $1.2 million (for 2007), $1.59 million (2008) and $1.98 million (2009). Shields becomes the second potential Hall of Fame offensive lineman to retire from the Chiefs in the last two years. Tackle Willie Roaf, a 11-time Pro Bowl performer, retired last year.

"I am looking forward to a future filled with sports in mind," Shields wrote. "Whether it is in the stands, on the sideline, in the press box or in a office -- football will remain in my blood."

Griffin arrested

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Minnesota Vikings cornerback Cedric Griffin was freed on $50 bail after being arrested early Sunday in downtown Minneapolis and charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct, authorities said.

Griffin, 24, was released from the Hennepin County jail at 4:45 a.m.

Two witnesses told KSTP-TV that the Vikings cornerback was thrown out of the Spin nightclub for not pulling up his pants. The club has a dress code requiring that pants not sag below the waist.

The witnesses said Griffin then had a dustup with bouncers and police before being taken away in handcuffs.

A court appearance for Griffin is scheduled Friday.

A Vikings team spokesman declined comment.

Hankton, 26, caught just 34 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns in four seasons with the Jaguars, but is regarded as a physically talented young performer who could emerge as a solid contributor with increased playing time. He will likely have the opportunity to earn that playing time with the Vikings, who are seeking to upgrade at the wide receiver position.

Minnesota earlier in the signing period added unrestricted wide receiver Bobby Wade, who played for the Tennessee Titans in 2006.

Buried on the Jacksonville depth chart, Hankton has been seeking a team where he can be more than just a special teams contributor. He visited with Cleveland and Buffalo earlier in the free agency period. Hankton has good size and speed and the Jacksonville staff regarded him as an improving route-runner.

A former Texas Southern standout, Hankton signed with Jacksonville as an undrafted free agent in 2003. He appeared in 46 games for the Jaguars, with one start. Hankton registered 31 special teams tackles.

Wistrom to coach at southwest Missouri high schoolAssociated Press

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Grant Wistrom has done it all in his college and NFL careers, winning three national championships at Nebraska and a Super Bowl with the St. Louis Rams. Now he's looking to add the title of "coach" to his football résumé, and he's willing to start small.

Released last month from the Seattle Seahawks, the 30-year-old defensive end plans to move home to southwest Missouri and become an assistant coach at the Springfield high school where his older brother, Chance, is principal.

Wistrom hasn't officially retired from the NFL, but said Monday he is "99.9 percent sure" he won't be playing an 11th season in the pros.

The Wistrom brothers and Parkview High School head coach Wes Beachler confirmed Monday that Grant Wistrom would be joining the Parkview staff.

"This is what we can do now," said Grant Wistrom, a Webb City native. "I like what [Beachler] is doing, I respect him as a coach, I respect his philosophies and I get to hang with my brother a little bit."

Chance Wistrom is excited to be back around his brother, too. He coached at Seneca High School from 1999-2003, but now gets to see his brother grow as a coach.

"We're excited to have him here, and he's excited to have the opportunity to be close to family and coach," Chance Wistrom said.

The Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday afternoon retained a key veteran, re-signing unrestricted free agent James Reed to a three-year contract, a deal that enables the team to keep intact its starting defensive tackle tandem of a year ago.

Kansas City last month re-signed its other starting tackle, Ron Edwards, to a one-year deal. The Chiefs also added veteran unrestricted free agent Alfonso Boone, formerly of Chicago, to bolster a position that was perilously thin at the outset of free agency.

The retentions of Reed and Edwards and the addition of Boone should now provide Kansas City with a viable tackle rotation for 2007. Yet to be determined is the fate of veteran Ryan Sims, the Chiefs' first-round pick in 2002, and a defensive tackle who has been regarded as an underachiever for most of his NFL career.

Financial details of Reed's contract were not immediately available, but it is believed to be worth about $2.5 million-$3 million, including a signing bonus of $200,000.

Reed, 30, is a hard-working, blue-collar player, an undersized interior defender who gets the most out of his abilities, and who has become a favorite of coach Herm Edwards. The two were together for five seasons with the New York Jets, where Edwards made Reed a sixth-round choice in the 2001 draft.

When Edwards took the job with the Chiefs last spring, he pursued Reed in free agency, and the two were reunited in Kansas City when the tackle signed a one-year contract. At the recent NFL owners meetings, Edwards noted the importance of trying to re-sign Reed, if possible.

In his first season in the Chiefs' lineup, Reed started 15 games and registered 42 tackles, one sack, 10 quarterback pressures and five passes defensed.

For his career, the former Iowa State standout has 218 tackles, seven sacks, nine passes defensed and four fumble recoveries. He has appeared in 95 games, with 32 starts.

The New England Patriots, who seem to add a veteran cornerback to their secondary mix every offseason, on Tuesday afternoon reached a contract agreement with unrestricted free agent Tory James, who spent the past four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals.

James
An 11-year veteran, James will sign a one-year contract with a base value of about $1.35 million. The deal, counting incentives, can be worth as much as $2.7 million.

James, 33, is coming off a supbar 2006 campaign, but still notched 21 interceptions in his four seasons with the Bengals, and drew interest from several other franchises, including the Green Bay Packers, in recent weeks.

Most teams view James as a potential nickel cornerback and the Patriots probably will use him in that role.

He will provide the Patriots a veteran insurance policy in the event franchise cornerback Asante Samuel, who remains unsigned, does not participate in the club's offseason training program or misses the start of training camp. Samuel has said he wants a long-term contract and that he would prefer to be traded rather than sign the one-year qualifying offer of $7.79 million which New England has tendered him as a franchise player.

Another of the Pats' young cornerbacks, Randall Gay, remains a restricted free agent. Gay met recently with New York Jets officials and could still be signed to a restricted free agent offer sheet. The league deadline for restricted offer sheets is Friday.

Given that the Pats have struggled through a series of debilitating injuries in the secondary each of the past three seasons, developing depth in the unit is a priority.

James started all 16 games for the Bengals in 2006 and had 41 tackles, four interceptions and 10 passes defensed. But he fell out of favor with the Cincinnati coaching staff late in the year and the Bengals made virtually no effort to re-sign him once he moved into the unrestricted free agent market.

In 158 games with Denver (1996-99), Oakland (2000-2002) and Cincinnati (2003-2006), James has 429 tackles, 39 interceptions, 79 passes defensed, one sack, six forced fumbles and four recoveries. He earned a Pro Bowl berth in 2004 when he registered a career-best eight interceptions, and was a Pro Bowl alternate in 2005, when he had five pickoffs.

The former LSU standout, who entered the league as the Broncos' second-round choice in the '96 draft, has four seasons with five or more interceptions and five campaigns in which he had 10 or more passes defensed.

A Special Master ruled Wednesday punter Todd Sauerbrun is now a free agent -- available to sign with any team -- after winning a grievance that voided the New England Patriots right to match a one-year contract he recently signed with the Denver Broncos.

The failure to put the first-right-of-refusal provision in a separate attachment to the contract was the reason the Special Master ruled in favor of Sauerbrun. The case was argued in his behalf by Jeff Kessler, one of the labor lawyers who helped to write the collective bargaining agreement.

Sauerbrun signed a contract with the Patriots last fall that had a first right of refusal provision, giving the team seven days to match any offer Sauerbrun might receive in free agency in 2007. The CBA states such clauses must be put on a separate page and not on a page that explains the main terms of the contract.

For whatever reason, the Patriots put the right to match on the contract term sheet.

The Broncos signed Sauerbrun to a one-year, $820,000 contract and Sauerbrun wanted to go to Denver. The Patriots matched.

Bush's right leg '99 percent' healed in time for draftAssociated Press

Michael Bush is up and running, his broken right leg nearly fully healed just in time for the NFL draft.

The former Louisville star running back this week took part in his first full workout since he was hurt in September, and also received a thumbs-up prognosis from James Andrews, an Alabama-based orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports injuries.

"I reviewed an X-ray today and it looks like it is 99 percent healed," Andrews wrote in a letter dated Wednesday and obtained by The Associated Press. "I would estimate that Michael Bush will pick up in the NFL where he left off in college, and should be a top-ranked running back taken in the 2007 NFL draft."

The letter was released by Bush's agent, Todd France, who said he is forwarding Andrews' letter, Bush's most recent X-rays and a DVD from his client's workout to all 32 NFL teams. The workout was held at Louisville on Monday and filmed by school officials, France said.

The agent hopes the updated information will clear up any doubts about Bush's status going into the two-day draft on April 28-29.

"It's great news," France said. "It's huge. My thing was I wanted to take away any negative perceptions in people's minds where his health status is because he couldn't work out at the combine. Well, guess what, look at him now."

Bush was projected to be a Heisman Trophy candidate before he broke his leg in Louisville's season-opener against Kentucky in September. He was coming off a junior season in which he ran for 1,143 yards and an NCAA-leading 23 touchdowns.

Bush applied for a medical redshirt in case he decided to come back, but instead opted to enter the NFL draft.

The injury has led Bush's stock to fall in numerous draft projections, which peg him as a second- or third-round pick at best -- and well behind Oklahoma's Adrian Peterson and California's Marshawn Lynch.

Prior to being hurt, the 6-foot-1, 251-pound Bush was noted for running with both power and speed, while also being a capable receiver.

His recovery comes about a month after Bush had a second operation during which a new rod was inserted into his leg after the bone didn't heal quickly enough after the initial surgery.

"It is remarkable how quickly this has improved," Andrews wrote. "It certainly looks much better than it did some weeks ago."

Andrews said he also was impressed after viewing the workout, noting Bush took part in 100 yard runs, multiple ladder drills, jumped rope and did 225-pound squats.

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has teamed up with the United Way to donate $10,000 to assist families affected by the massacre at Virginia Tech, his former school.

"When tragic things like this happen, families have enough to deal with, and if I can help in some small way, that's the least I can do," said Vick, who played for the Hokies before being drafted No. 1 overall by the Falcons in 2001.

The Vick Foundation is collecting donations from local communities in both Atlanta and Virginia that will be placed in the United In Caring Fund for Victims of the VA Tech Tragedy and the special fund at the United Way of Montgomery, Radford and Floyd counties, which serves the Virginia Tech area.

Vick's foundation said the money will be used to provide help with funeral expenses, transportation for family members and other support services.

Three players widely regarded as top-10 picks in the NFL draft, including Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson, have admitted to previously using marijuana, Pro Football Weekly reported.

Johnson, Clemson defensive end Gaines Adams and Louisville defensive tackle Amobi Okoye admitted using the drug, according to multiple sources who have watched the interviews, the publication reported. The admissions were made during standard interviews at the NFL Scouting Combine, which are taken by every player and shared by all 32 teams for review.

Johnson is being considered by the Oakland Raiders for the first overall pick in the draft.

While some teams could see marijuana use as troubling, others might view the players' admissions of prior use as a sign of maturity, particularly since players are encouraged to be honest in the interviews.

But the NFL's new player conduct policy, along with its hardline suspensions of the Cincinnati Bengals' Chris Henry for eight games and the Tennessee Titans' Adam "Pacman" Jones for an entire season, could cause teams to put even more emphasis on character, now that the league has made clear it will deal with off-the-field misbehavior harshly.

"[NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell] is going to be all over any team that drafts players with borderline character," an unidentified team official said, according to Pro Football Weekly. "You are not going to see a draft like, for instance, Cincinnati's [in 2006], where they took four criminals in one draft, because the owners are going to start getting fined."

Six-time Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca, who has not participated in any of the offseason conditioning workouts, missed the beginning of the Pittsburgh Steelers' first full-squad minicamp under rookie coach Mike Tomlin on Friday and is expected to boycott all three days of the weekend practice sessions.

The team's top lineman and a fixture at left guard since moving into the starting lineup midway through his rookie campaign, Faneca is reportedly upset with his contract. The deal runs only through the 2007 season, at a base salary of $3.375 million, and progress toward a possible extension has been slow.

Faneca also publicly questioned the franchise's choice of Tomlin as the successor to former head coach Bill Cowher. The nine-year veteran noted earlier this spring that he felt the job should have gone to offensive line coach Russ Grimm, who was a finalist for the position. Grimm subsequently left the Steelers join the staff of another former Pittsburgh assistant, Ken Whisenhunt, who is the Arizona Cardinals' new head coach.

Team officials have not commented on Faneca's absence.

The Steelers paid Faneca a $1 million roster bonus early last month, but he has steadfastly avoided the offseason program. Since attendance at this weekend's minicamp is voluntary, he cannot be fined for missing it.

Tomlin will convene a mandatory minicamp next month, over the Mother's Day weekend, and Faneca will be subject to fines if he does not attend.

Faneca, 30, was the team's first-round choice in the 1998 draft, one of only nine guards chosen in the first rounds of the past 10 drafts. The former LSU standout, who has been a team captain for the past three seasons, has missed only two games in his career and has started in 137 of 142 contests in which he has appeared.

Davi is very, very good. He was overshadowed at LSU by Bowe, but he is big (6-2, about 200 pounds), ran two 40s under 4.45 at their pro day, and had a 37 inch vertical. Guy has a lot of talent, and I wouldnt mind seeig the Boys get him in the 3rd round. And Crosby is a stud, a game changing kicker worth a third round pick. But your right, I doubt Jerry would do that

Timed perfectly with the two-year extension just signed by defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, Ravens defensive tackle Kelly Gregg, a long-time student of Ryan, reached a four-year, $20.3 million extension that will keep him a Raven until 2011.

The Ryan-Gregg relationship goes back to Oklahoma where Ryan was an assistant coach and Gregg was a player. Once he got into the NFL, Ryan talked the Ravens into signing Gregg as an undrafted free agent. Gregg became one of the most productive undrafted defenders since the start of the new millennium.

Over the past five years, Gregg has led all NFL interior defensive linemen in tackles. At 6-foot, 310 pounds, Gregg was considered to short too be a big-time player in the NFL. Since getting together with Ryan and the Ravens, Gregg has towered over most defensive tackles over the past five years. Gregg has been battling Jamal Williams of the Chargers for the league interior tackle lead for the past five seasons.

Included in the deal is $3.5 million worth of guarantees.

The interesting part of the deal is the Ravens didn't have to do it. Gregg had two years remaining on his contract, paying him $1.4 million this year and $1.7 million next year. The Ravens decided to reward Gregg for his efforts and give him a potential career-ending contract.

Offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden will put off retirement and return to the Baltimore Ravens for a 12th season, he told The Baltimore Sun.

"I won't say that it's 100 percent because I don't want to close any door. But unless something drastic happens to make me change my mind -- and I don't foresee that happening -- then I'm playing one more year," Ogden, 32, told the newspaper.

Ogden, a 10-time Pro Bowl selection, had been considering retirement since the Ravens' season ended with a playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts. But he said he changed his mind once his injured big toe started feeling better.

"My toe was still hurting, and it still isn't 100 percent. I still haven't gotten over that last loss [to the Colts]," Ogden told the Sun. "But once the toe started feeling better and I started feeling better about our season, the decision became easier to make."

However, he's not sure if 2007 will be his last year, either.

"I don't know," he told the newspaper. "I'll probably have to go through this again at the end of next season. I'm not one of those players who want a farewell tour or something like that. As long as I enjoy playing and am willing to prepare, then I'll keep playing."

"In Florida, where Randy works out, he ran a 4.26, 4.28, and a 4.31 during one of his workouts last week", said DiPiero. "He's in the best shape of his life." Moss is currently at a playing weight of 205 pounds and is completely healthy after suffering ankle, rib, groin and hamstring injuries over the the past few years. "Randy is determined to prove all of them wrong," DiPiero added in regards to critics who have questioned Moss' work ethic. "He wants to play for a title, and win a Super Bowl."

Leak signs free-agent contract with ChicagoESPN.com news services

CHICAGO -- Chris Leak is a Chicago Bear.

Leak, the Florida quarterback who went undrafted in this weekend's NFL draft, signed a free-agent contract with the Bears.

Leak won the college football national championship at Florida last year. His size (a hair under 6 feet tall) was one drawback cited by NFL scouts.

"We were happy that he is with a Super Bowl team like the Bears," his father, Curtis Leak, told the Charlotte Observer on Monday. "It's a good situation for him. That's all that matters to us. I feel great about it."

Leak threw for 2,435 yards and 16 touchdowns last season for Florida.

Florida had eight players selected in the draft, including two in the first round. Defensive end Jarvis Moss went No. 17 to Denver and safety Reggie Nelson was the 21st pick, heading to Jacksonville.

Dolphins cut ties with Vick, Wright, IwuchukwuAssociated Press

DAVIE, Fla. -- Marcus Vick's stint with the Miami Dolphins is over.

Vick, signed last season as a free agent receiver after a troubled career as Virginia Tech's quarterback, was among three players waived by the Dolphins on Tuesday.

The Dolphins also released defensive tackle Manny Wright and linebacker Bobby Iwuchukwu.

Vick appeared in one game with the Dolphins after spending some of the year on the practice squad.

Vick was kicked off Virginia Tech's team following his junior year after repeated brushes with the law and other misbehavior. Last December, a 17-year-old girl who claimed she had a two-year sexual relationship with Vick filed a $6.3 million lawsuit against him, alleging sexual battery upon a minor, infliction of emotional distress, fraud and other charges.

Wright was reduced to tears on the practice field during the 2005 season when scolded by then-coach Nick Saban, and asked to be released or traded away last season. He did not play in the 2006 season, and was with the Dolphins for their first minicamp under new coach Cam Cameron last month.

Iwuchukwu spent last year on practice squads in San Francisco and Baltimore and signed with the Dolphins earlier this offseason.

Tom Brady has already made a connection with Randy Moss.

The Boston Globe reported on Tuesday that the quarterback restructured his contract to create cap space so the Patriots could acquire the receiver.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Brady did not take a pay cut; rather, he restructured his current deal that runs through 2010.

As part of the trade, the Patriots were required to take on the $9.75 million that Moss was scheduled to earn. After the deal, Moss tore up his old contract and signed a one-year, $3 million deal that could be worth up to $5 million with incentives.

On the second day of the draft on Sunday, the Patriots received permission from the Raiders to speak with Moss about a possible trade.

Dude, even having lost a step and a half (which could only be an offshoot of who he had throwing balls to him) still has got some decent skills. Even if he plays like he has the last couple of years, he's still an upgrade for them. On the other hand, he's Randy "you stupid-mutha-fucka" Moss.

Is it just me or does this trade smack of the Duane Starks trade a couple of years ago? Try and mine teams with crappy rosters for players who once upon a time were positional wunderkinds.

Cobbs is a third-year player from Arkansas who joined the Broncos in September 2005 as a member of the practice squad.

Young's agent meanwhile told The Denver Post that the 5-foot-10-inch, 207 pound Young picked the Broncos because the team showed the most interest after the Longhorns reserve went undrafted.

The Broncos had not announced Young's signing as of late last night and a Broncos' spokesman did not immediately return a message left after business hours.

The Associated Press reports Jacksonville Jaguars CB Ahmad Carroll has been arrested on weapon and drug charges early Saturday, May 5, on suspicion of being involved in a disturbance with a weapon, according to authorities. Carroll was questioned by police after he was pointed out as someone involved during a disturbance at an Atlanta restaurant, Atlanta police spokesman officer James Polite said. Carroll acknowledged to police that he was carrying a 9mm pistol Police then searched his car and found 11 pink tablets believed to be ecstasy. He was arrested and charged with carrying a weapon without a license, possession of drugs and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was released on a $7,000 bond.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Olympic 100-meter champion Justin Gatlin, facing a track and field suspension of up to eight years for failing a drug test last summer, is trying to launch a career in pro football as a wide receiver with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"If [his speed] can transfer to football, you have a real threat," Bucs coach Jon Gruden said. "If it can't, then it won't work."

Gatlin, who is participating in the Bucs' rookie minicamp this weekend, said he last played football during his freshman year at Tennessee. He then concentrated on track, winning the 100 meters at the 2004 Athens Olympics and equaling the world record of Jamaica's Asafa Powell at 9.77 seconds.

"This is where I want to be," Gatlin said. "I didn't come here on my high horse, all mighty, and saying give me a locker and let me do what I want to do. I'm starting from the ground up, and that's where I want to start."

Gatlin said he worked out with Arizona and Houston. The Bucs have been the only team to bring him in for a formal workout. The team will decide after this weekend whether to sign Gatlin and bring him back for the club's next minicamp.

"He won a gold medal. He wants to give this a shot, and this is a good launching pad to see how quickly he picks it up, how natural he is and how far he has to go," Gruden said.

Gatlin faces the suspension following a positive test for testosterone and other steroids at the Kansas Relays last April. His appeal is pending and he said Friday that he has not given up hope of resuming his career as a sprinter.

In the meantime, he will try to make the transition from fastest man in the world to football -- as Bob Hayes did more than four decades ago. But he knows there is a lot more to making an NFL team than being the first runner to the finish line.

"Track and field, you go out there and run, you're the fastest guy, that's what it is, you're the fastest guy," Gatlin said. "In football you might have the fastest go route or the sickest cuts out there, but if you ain't what they're looking for out on this field then take a number and get in line."

Spencer to rehab shoulder, won't need surgeryBy Len Pasquarelli

Seattle Seahawks starting center Chris Spencer, troubled by persistent shoulder problems during a recent minicamp, will not need a second surgery at this time, and will rehabilitate for the rest of this week in Birmingham, Ala., in an attempt to reduce his discomfort.

After experiencing soreness last week during the minicamp, in which he did only limited work, Spencer visited earlier this week with noted orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews for follow-up opinion. Andrews repaired both of Spencer's shoulders in the offseason, but determined that further surgery was not indicated.

Had surgery been required, Spencer likely would not have been recovered in time for the start of training camp in late July, and there were fears he might miss the entire season. Spencer's representatives said Andrews was confident that non-surgical rehabilitation will improve the condition of the two-year veteran.

There is no definitive timetable for Spencer's return to the field, and he could most of the remaining offseason workouts, but should be ready to camp. Andrews will continue to re-evaluate Spencer's progress.

The health of Spencer, the Seahawks' first-round choice in the 2005 draft, is critical to a Seattle offensive line unit that is coming off an uneven performance in 2006, and which might undergo some changes this year. Losing the young center would be a major setback.

After appearing in just seven games as a rookie, Spencer started 13 games in 2006, five at left guard and then the final eight games of the campaign at center. The former Ole Miss star, regarded coming out of college as one of the best center prospects of the last decade, is seen as a player who could emerge in time as a Pro Bowl-caliber blocker.

With Spencer unable to participate in the minicamp, 14-year veteran Chris Gray moved to center, where he started 34 games from 1998-2000, with the No. 1 unit. But the Seahawks would prefer Gray stay at his normal right guard spot. The team's longtime starting center, Robbie Tobeck, retired after the 2006 season.

I'm a huge Green fan...but even I want them to get this shit done. It doesn't help the Chiefs to keep him. Carl Peterson just doesn't want to 'get less then he deserves'.... :rolleyes

McNair owner of vehicle driven by drunken driverAssociated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Baltimore Ravens quarterback Steve McNair was arrested early Thursday and charged with being the owner of a vehicle operated by a drunken driver.

The former Tennessee Titans player was a passenger in his silver pickup truck, police said.

Police said a copy of the arrest report wouldn't be available until later in the day but confirmed McNair was arrested and booked into jail about 3 a.m.

McNair was arrested under a misdemeanor statute that charges the owner if an intoxicated person is allowed to drive a vehicle. Under the law, it doesn't matter if McNair was drinking, only if the driver was impaired, police said.

The driver, whose identity wasn't immediately available, was stopped because the truck was speeding, police said.

"We are aware of the situation, but we're getting most of our information from the media," Ravens spokesman Chad Steele said Thursday. "We've not spoken with Steve, so we're not sure at this time if we will have a statement."

McNair declined to comment when he was released from custody. He was accompanied by a friend, nightclub owner Robert "Big Daddy" Gaddy.

McNair was arrested in downtown Nashville in May 2003 and charged with DUI and illegal gun possession. After a year of legal wrangling, a judge dismissed those charges, ruling police didn't have sufficient reason to pull over McNair in the first place.

Cowboys expect Owens to be ready for training campESPN.com news services

Terrell Owens' rehab from two offseason finger surgeries is progressing faster than expected, according to published reports.

Dallas coach Wade Phillips told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that doctors said T.O. is ahead of schedule with his rehab but still won't be able to participate in the team's upcoming minicamp.

"We're still talking to his doctors, but he's not far from participating," Phillips told the Dallas Morning News.

Owens could possibly be ready even before the Cowboys open training camp this July.

Owens had surgery right after the season to repair a torn tendon in his right ring finger, an injury he sustained late in the season. Earlier in the season, he had a plate screwed into the same finger after breaking it while blocking in a game in September.

Owens is due a $3 million roster bonus in June and a $5 million salary this season.

Despite the injured finger, Owens caught 85 passes for 1,180 yards and an NFL-high 13 touchdowns.

Cowboys | Williams may change positions in nickel defense

When the Cowboys went to their nickel defense in Sunday's practice, safety Roy Williams teamed with Burnett as the inside linebackers in the 4-2-5 package.

The idea is to get Williams closer to the line of scrimmage, where he is more effective, and out of coverage. Williams had trouble at times last season covering tight ends and receivers down the middle as a safety.

Ken Hamlin and second-year safety Pat Watkins manned the two safety spots in the package, while the corners remained unchanged from last season, with Glenn and Anthony Henry covering the outside receivers and Terence Newman jumping into the slot.

Up front it was DeMarcus Ware at right end and Anthony Spencer at left end, with Chris Canty and Jay Ratliff inside at the tackle positions. Ellis, though, said new head coach Wade Phillips has talked to him about rushing from an inside spot once he's healthy.

This might be the type of player Phillips wants at one of the nickel linebacker spots since Keith Davis was manning the same spot on the seconnd-team defense.
