Conservative host returns to the air after week suspension for using racial slur

MILWAUKEE -- A conservative radio show host who was taken off the air for using an ethnic slur resumed his show Monday, but vowed that he will not change the tone of his program.

Mark Belling used the word "wetback," a derogatory term for illegal Mexican immigrants, on his Oct. 27 show about potential voter fraud in Wisconsin.

On Monday, he devoted the final hour of his three-hour program to the issue, telling listeners that he intends to "test how long (his) leash is" now that he is back on the air.

"I cannot make any promise to the audience other than this: This show ain't changing at all," he said. "I can't promise that I won't say something that will be truly offensive to many, as my comment that created this entire situation, was."

Belling, an occasional fill-in for national conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh, has been on WISN for 15 years and consistently draws top ratings for his target audience of men ages 25 to 54.

No, it doesn't. But I'd guess there are a lot more people that might be offended in Texas than in Wisconsin, and the DJ's here didn't get suspended. Really, who cares? It's radio. If you don't like what someone is saying, change the station, put in a CD, talk on the phone, do something else.

What are you trying to say here? That the Wisconsin right-winger should be punished? That you agree with the FCC censuring broadcasts? I thought you posted this thread to say what an SOB the guy was for using an ethnic slur.

Like I said, I personally don't care. Who am I to tell someone what to say or not to? These things have a way of taking care of themselves. If he keeps offending a certain group of people (whether it be Mexican-Americans, gays, or underwater basket weavers), they will either protest until he shuts up, or bad shit will start happening to him.

Hell, I don't know. I don't like the FCC controlling what people can or can't say over the air. Accountability should be with the employer, not the government. If my boss tells me that I can't do something on their dime, then I shouldn't. And if I do whatever that is and get caught, the employer can do whatever they want as punishment, and if I don't like it, I can quit.

As far as political education goes, I again don't know what to tell you. Is that a talk like the birds and the bees? Or some elective class I missed?Who's responsible for teaching this?
