My computer's been acting odd since last night. My dumbass brother probably fucked it up with his stupid P2P programs (which I now uninstalled) and now I'm having a lot of problems. I cannot open Windows Media Player, and when I click it, it shows up on the processes on the task manager then it disappears. I cannot open the user account section of the Control Panel either, and when people try to view messages in IE (not me because I use FF but everyone else does) in their Yahoo mail, the message is white only. Can anyone help?

run whatever antivirus programs you have. You could also try the 'system restore' feature in XP.

I tried to boot it in safe mood and when the "yes or no" thing comes up (yes being run in safe mode and no being start system restore) I clicked no and nothing happens.

You may have the jeefo virus It attacks all the exe files.

I am not sure what you have for protection but this is free and will remove it.
let me know what you find.

If you don't have a virus then you have 3 choices, you can restore your PC to a week ago, reinstall windows and recover some dll files.
or you can install this and it will tell you what dll files are missing.

It's called PC Wizard 2007

It will tell you everything you need to know about your PC

All the stats. CPU temperature, HD performance, Video. sound card. internet card , memory size, etc...

after you check out your PC for 5 minutes. go to the Benchmark tab

click on the icon that looks like a pc tower that reads Global performance.

It's the last tab on the bottom left of this picture,

http://www.klitetools.com/screens/p/PC%20Wizard.gif

after you click it? do not move the mouse, or touch any keys. you will see some animations, leave them alone it's testing out your video card.

after the test? you will get a score like 1507.17

I need to know that number.
thanks.

Did you ever hold down the F1 key and go into setup?

And how come you never called? I can give you a Nike shoe box full of NFL cards 1990-1999 for the spare parts you have.

Yeah I wasn't able to get into any other menus from the setup menu. In other words, nothing I could do was helping and I couldn't get to the desktop or anything. Sorry I didn't call but I didn't save the number. And I dunno about the extra parts. I'm probably going to keep them and get a new hard drive in the future.

I hate to say this now...but did you get your memory checked?

Sounds like a memory failure. Could be a MB failure too...

Nope, no prob with the memory. It was saying "Windows could not start because no boot device was detected" which is odd because it's never needed one. So I found it and put it in but that's all it would say.

I figured you were getting that if your screen ended up going black...

That can be a memory problem...if the memory is going out when you shut down it can lose the bootfile, and exe files, it can also be unable to pull the bootfile up into memory when booting.

The fact that you first started encountering this problem when trying to boot WMP(a huge memory sucking hog of a program) and had problems with text showing up(almost always a memory issue)...and then it got progressively worse does sound exactly like a memory failure.

Keep in mind your memory can be in the process of going bad and your pc won't detect it as bad.

But anyway...you got a new PC, so problem solved, the best way :tu

Well, thanks for the info whottt. Getting a new PC was something I've been needing to do for awhile anyway. Windows Vista is pretty cool.

Sounds like it could just be a bad hard drive. Give it to mouse. He can probably put another drive in it.
