EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) -- Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom was diagnosed Saturday with a left shoulder injury.

Odom, who was injured Friday night against Sacramento, underwent an MRI exam Saturday that revealed a torn labrum, team spokesman John Black said. He didn't travel to Phoenix for a game on Sunday and will see a doctor Monday.

Odom got hurt when he was fouled by Sacramento's Brad Miller with 2:47 remaining of a 116-108 loss. Odom finished with 26 points, 13 rebounds and six assists.

Black said the team would not speculate on whether Odom could be sidelined indefinitely.

It was the second major injury of the season for Odom, who missed 1 1/2 months because of a sprained right ankle before returning Jan. 27.

Two years ago, Odom sustained the same left shoulder injury, underwent surgery and missed the final two months of the season.

Luke Walton is set to see a specialist Monday about his sprained right ankle. He has missed 16 games.

Kwame Brown returned Friday night after missing 27 games because of a severely sprained right ankle.

Sucks.... that Lakers/Suns game tomorrow has really lost some of its sheen with Odom, Walton and Brown out for Los Angeles and Marion and Diaw out for Phoenix.

Walton had a similar injury his senior season at UA. It really hindered him, even weeks after returning to play. Hope its not that extent, but it appears it is. That injury cost Arizona a Final Four. This could cost the Lakers a series win.

Odom will most likely miss the rest of the season and maybe playoffs.

He ended up finishing the game, but it looks like a torn labrum. Out indefinitely.

When is Marion expected back? I noticed the Suns played a lot of guys last night. Was that a product of being up big or has D'Antoni finally pulled his head out of his ass and realized he needs to monitor the minutes of his starters better?

"labrum tear" sounds pretty pretty serious, it's cartilege. They didn't say how serious.

http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/orthopedicsurgery/labrumtear.html

What is the treatment for labrum tears?

The treatment depends upon which kind of tear there is in the labrum. Tears that are due to instability of the shoulder, either subluxation or dislocations, require that the labrum be reattached to the rim of the socket. This can be done with an incision on the front of the shoulder, or it can be done with arthroscopic techniques through smaller incisions. There are advantages and disadvantages of each approach (see Patient Guide to Shoulder Instability). At this institution we favor an open operation with an incision until arthroscopic techniques become more perfected.

If the labrum is frayed, usually no treatment is necessary since it doesn’t usually cause symptoms. However, if there is a large tear of the labrum, the torn part should either be cut out and trimmed, or it should be repaired. Which treatment is used depends upon where the tear is located and how big it is. This type of tear requiring repair without instability of the shoulder is rare.

Tears of the labrum near the biceps tendon attachment (SLAP lesions) may be just trimmed or may need to be reattached to the top of the socket. The best way to do this is with arthroscopic surgery since this area is difficult to reach with an open operation through a large incision. Using the arthroscope and small incisions for other instruments, the labrum can be re-attached to the rim of the socket using either sutures or tacks.

What is the recovery from labrum surgery?

The recovery depends upon many factors, such as where the tear was located, how severe it was and how good the surgical repair was. It is believed that it takes at least four to six weeks for the labrum to re-attach itself to the rim of the bone, and probably another four to six weeks to get strong. Once the labrum has healed to the rim of the bone, it should see stress very gradually so that it can gather strength. It is important not to re-injure it while it is healing.

How much motion and strengthening of the arm is allowed after surgery also depends upon many factors, and it is up to the surgeon to let you know your limitations and how fast to progress. Because of the variability in the injury and the type of repair done, it is difficult to predict how soon someone can to return to activities and to sports after the repair. The type of sport also is important, since contact sports have a greater chance of injuring the labrum repair. However, a vast majority of patients have full function of the shoulder after labrum repair, and most patients can return to their previous level of sports with no or few restrictions.

He had this same injury 2 years ago and missed the last 2 months of the season. There was no need to bring him back quick that year, since they weren't making the playoffs. But from what I understand it's not too serious, he was able to finish the game. I think it's still to early to set a time table though.

mabber, it was necessity, but hopefully their play will lead to more minutes down the road. He's been terrible with inconsistant minutes, but Burke, with 10-15 minutes, has been pretty solid. Hustle, has a jumper out to three-point range... Pike was his typical "spread the floor/chuck it" type of player. Each added some hustle the Suns had lacked. Little defense, but were extra fouls, which meant they played tougher than most of the regulars. Missing was Banks, Jumaine Jones and Rose. Was surprised Jones and Banks didn't make an appearance.

And Odom's injury sucks. Oh well...

It was a product of missing two starters. He still played 8 guys which isn't unusual.

Looks like Marion will return for the game Sunday.

Too bad about LO. Hope he heals quickly but that injury sounds pretty bad.
