In a move that figures to have ramifications for several tailbacks who are available either in free agency or via trade, the Houston Texans on Sunday evening reached a contract agreement in principle with Ahman Green.

Details of the contract were not immediately available.

Green, 30, visited with Houston officials over the weekend and the club moved quickly to strike a deal that addresses one of its biggest offseason priorities. Of all the tailbacks who are available, Green, despite his age, was targeted by Houston coaches.

The nine-year veteran, who has played the past seven seasons for the Green Bay Packers, is coming off a 2006 season in which he re-established himself as a top runner. Green missed all but five games in 2005 because of a quadriceps injury, but started 14 contests in 2006 and rushed for 1,059 yards and five touchdowns on 266 carries.

It marked the sixth time in seven seasons that Green had rushed for 1,000 yards.

For his career, the former Nebraska star has carried 1,871 times for 8,491 yards and 54 touchdowns. He also has 350 receptions for 2,710 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Green headed to Texans

Ahman Green became the first free agent running back to sign a contract this offseason as he agreed to a four-year, $23 million deal with the Houston Texans on Sunday.

The deal includes $8 million in the first year between signing bonus, roster bonus and base salary. Green also gets $18 million over the first three years of the contract, another staggering amount in a year of hefty contracts around the NFL.

Green's deal is the same total as the extension signed by Jacksonville Jaguars running back Fred Taylor earlier in the week.

With Green off the market, Jamal Lewis, Dominic Rhodes and Travis Henry are the most prominent backs available. A Baltimore source said he thought that Lewis might re-sign with the Ravens for approximately $2 million per season. Considering the market, the price could go up.

Green, 30, has rushed for more than 1,000 yards in six of the past sevens seasons. He missed much of the 2005 season with a quadriceps injury. Green also received offers from the Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers before ultimately choosing Houston.

He'll have good numbers in that system. If Ron Dayne can have some good games with the Texans, then Green will have some. He's a one cut runner. Perfect for the ol' broncos system.

Green had over 1000 yards last year, 300 plus recieving, and 6 total tds, not amazing stats, but without an o-line not to bad. Texans got to get an o-line together though or he will be in trouble

Green should fit Kubiak's system very well. It should also signal the official end of Dominick whats his name's Texan career.

Ahman Green was really good in his prime and isn't Kubiak's system supposed to make runners out of anyone? That's alot to pay Green right off, but he's somewhat of an insurance policy against Domanick Davis not coming back to full strength. Davis was going to be good....still could be.

Detroit will have Jones-Bell, Texans will have Green-Davis, at Dallas they have Jones-Barber, and even LT has a more than capable #2 with Turner.

And Curtis Martin was old and worn out already when he suffered his injury, hopefully Dominick can bounce back, young bones heal faster, especially when you dont have a 10 year career in your rearview

Carr is the best option at QB that any team can try to get, and I think the Texans will be smart enough to realize this. They will keep him for this year. If he fucks up this year, they will trade him but this is his last chance to prove himself and I think he knows this. He will have a great year this season because they will have enough of an OLine to protect him and enough offensive weapons to make him look good. The Texan D will be much improved and help the team as a whole.

Couldnt agree with you more, Carr has talent, but I think he and the team both need a change
