SPAM, for those unfamiliar, stands for Spurs Peak After (At) March. And this seems to be a hard and fast rule for Spurs basketball dating back to 1995, if you can believe it. That was David Robinson's MVP season, playing under uber-coach Bob Hill.

Here's a look at SPAM in all it's glory - the March and April records, 1995-2006:

1995: 25-4
1996: 22-5 (16-0 in March!)
1997: 7-19 (this was the year the entire team was hurt and won 20 games total)
1998: 17-8 (Duncan's rookie season; this particular team was better in December and January)
1999: 27-5 (in a 50 game season, after a 6-8 start - also 4-0 in May)
2000: 16-9 (Duncan missed the last eight games)
2001: 21-5
2002: 22-3 (9-0 in April!)
2003: 21-4 (this season was actually SPAJ - 19-13 before January 1st, 2003 and 41-9 after)
2004: 18-5 (7-0 in April!)
2005: 16-10 (Duncan missed the final 16 games of the season with an ankle injury)
2006: 19-7

TOTAL: 231-84, with a winning percentage of .733, which translates into 60-22 over 82 games.

And the 2007 SPAM March of Excellence? 6-0 so far.

SPAM is very real, my friends. :hat

7 of your last 10 opponents were below .500, as are your next six.Which means we've already played our tough opponents. So?

The results may extend back 13 years, but the acronym SPAM coined by "Chopper" had a later born-on date.

Which means we've already played our tough opponents. So?

Arguably, it also means that the Spurs have already lost to their tough opponents.

"Which means we've already played our tough opponents. So?"

... means we have a LOSING RECORD against this group:

Mavs+Suns+Rockets+Cavs+Jazz+Lakers+Heat+Pistons

5 of the Mavs opponents during their 17 game win streak were above .500......

7 of your next 10 opponenets are below .500. Two of the three that are above .500 are from the East (Detroit, Cleveland). The only serious competitor is Phoenix.

Both teams are light on serious competition right now. Its no less impressive though that the Spurs are once again winning games against teams that were stealing them earlier in the season. If the Spurs play at the top of their game, I see only 3 more losses at worst the rest of the way.......

Not completely true. I believe Detroit is above .500

Nice post. :smokin

The year that the Spurs lost to the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals with Artis and Ice they had a 53-29 record after being something like 27-22 at the All-Star Break. A 26-7 record after the break that year shows me that the SPAM has been around a lot longer than we can even comprehend with our limited human conscience. :)

We just needed Artis to get that tip-in and all would have been grand. That was my first .4 moment as a Spurs fan.

SPAM never expires. Like a fine wine it gets better with age, and probably kills just as many brain cells.

Nice observation SRJ, but as Solid D pointed out...the father of the SPAM acronym is SpursTalk's own Ed Helicopter Jones. Check some of the older threads if you want to read some of his Hemingway like experiences with Hawaii's favorite canned pig.

Incidentally...your 13 year run also coincides exactly with Pop becoming the GM of the franchise.

Ode To SPAM - a tribute to Chopper

It was late in the game and and around all you could see
an ocean of green, blue and white coming by two's and three's
Should I pass it, can't see my boys, where's Tony or Manu
Brent, anyone, shit, Robert's stuck like glue

What's that sailing thru the air, something yellow and blue
with ugly colors of red in the center, looks like a tired old shoe
Watch out, it's open, soft and salty it lands into my mouth
the refs call time out to kick the empty can south

Caught by surprise I close my mouth, swallow and spoke
to the ref about it, kept my composure because I just don't ever choke
He looked crosseyed to me and into my chest he poked
his finger and threatened a T as his shoes slowly smoked

Slowly, like liquid fire I felt a warmth spreading through my chest,
Then remembered that strange spam-tasting stuff, my strength starting to crest
Don't remember much after that, this happened when all was through
Final score, game 7, Spurs 107 Mavs 92

Ok, I'm ready, let me have it........!:^)

Oh, I wasn't at all trying to claim ownership of SPAM - this was just a guide for noobs and for Mavs fans who refuse to believe.

SPAM came before me, and SPAM will live on after I have disappeared into the ether...
