The Kentucky-Villanova game was all of three seconds old before a whistle blew. Dwight Perry was called for a foul.

Dwight Perry was not supposed to be in the game. He rarely leaves his spot on the end of the bench. A freshman, Dwight Perry entered three games during the season, officially compiling 0 minutes.

But Kentucky entered the wrong name in the scorebook before the game. It was supposed to read “Bobby Perry,” a senior forward who started 31 times this season.

Rules state that the book cannot be changed. So Bobby Perry waited to check in at the scorer’s table, Villanova controlled the jump ball, and Dwight Perry hacked a Villanova player. Then he left the game, a footnote that he’ll share with his friends and family.

“The wrong name was in the scorebook,” said Tom O’Connor, an N.C.A.A. selection committee member, in a statement. “If it were changed, it would have been a technical foul. They chose to deal with it this way.”
