GOP Gave Joe A Boost

WASHINGTON -- It's no secret that Joe Lieberman got strong support from Republicans last year, and that he has made strong overtures this year to Senate Republicans as he pursues a new, more bipartisan legislative path.

But new data show the extent of the help he got from big GOP donors in the last weeks of his 2006 campaign, as they poured more than $1.5 million into his final pre-election push - with subtle but unmistakable help from the White House.

The information was compiled by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. Its data are the first detailed look at the sources and amounts of GOP money that went into the Lieberman campaign.

...

In the general election, in which Lieberman ran as an "independent Democrat," his take from Republicans soared 80 percent. He collected more money from Republicans than from Democrats. And of major donors - giving $200 and more - Republicans exceeded Democrats.

A new, bipartisan legislative path? :rolleyes

I wonder if this means that Joe is going to work more closely with Democrats now?

GOP Joe has turned another corner in Iraq...

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Connecticut, told CNN Thursday he thinks the president's changed policy in Iraq has successfully decreased the violence in Baghdad and increased the confidence of U.S. forces there.

"Our soldiers told (Ret. Gen. Jack Keane) they feel more confident than ever as they go on patrol in Baghdad in the neighborhoods we've settled into with their Iraqi colleagues," Lieberman told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. "The Iraqi people are coming out and protecting them because they have chased out the fanatics on both sides, those who were carrying out sectarian killings."

"The American soldier is more confident walking the streets of Baghdad today and that's a very important change," he added.

...

"I look at it and say, do we want to turn Iraq, the Middle East and our future over to fanatics like that if we have a chance to stop them?," he said. "But this is war and we are fighting a brutal, inhumane, evil enemy. And so yes, they will strike at Mosul and Tal Afar as they have but that cannot lead us to throw in the towel and walk away."

Lieberman must have missed the news (http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/COL958118.htm) about the more than 100 people who died in suicide bombing in Iraq just yesterday.

He said decreased, not stopped.

Well, at least their willing to admit that 100/day is an improvement...

There's a peace vigil scheduled for outside Lieberman's CT home this Sunday. (http://www.myleftnutmeg.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=6341)
