Pacers-Spurs Preview
By NICOLINO DI BENEDETTO, STATS Writer=
Posted Mar 21 2007 2:40AM

The San Antonio Spurs followed up a long winning streak with a pair of listless losses to two of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference. They hope a visit from the struggling Indiana Pacers on Wednesday will help them rebound from those defeats.

San Antonio (46-20) made only 28-of-75 shots (37.3 percent) in its 91-85 loss to Boston - the team with the worst record in the East - on Saturday. It was the Spurs' second-worst shooting performance, better than only a 33.7 percentage in a 96-94 overtime win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Jan. 28.

"We played terrible for three quarters," said Spurs shooting guard Manu Ginobili. "We made a great effort down the stretch to come back. We were even ahead but then they made a couple of great shots and we stopped. Down the stretch we couldn't get anything done so that means a lot in games like this."

The defeat came after Thursday's 101-90 loss at Milwaukee - the last-place club in the Central Division - which snapped the Spurs' season-high 13-game winning streak. The Spurs shot 43.1 percent in that loss.

San Antonio will now try to avoid matching a season high of three straight losses set from Jan. 2-5.

The Spurs have won seven of the last eight games against the Pacers at San Antonio, including all four meetings at the AT&T Center since it opened for the 2002-03 season. Their lone home loss to Indiana in the last eight contests was a 92-82 defeat on Jan. 4, 2002, at the Alamodome.

Tim Duncan, who had 20 points and 16 rebounds Saturday, has dominated the Pacers during the four-game home winning streak with averages of 26.0 points and 11.5 rebounds. The three-time NBA Finals MVP leads the Spurs with 20.0 points and 10.8 rebounds per game and has helped them already claim a postseason berth in the West.

The Pacers (30-36) hope to slow down the 7-footer, but might have to do it without Jermaine O'Neal. The All-Star center attempted a dunk in the fourth quarter of Indiana's 86-76 loss to Houston on Tuesday and hit the floor after he was fouled by Shane Battier. O'Neal limped around for a few seconds before making one of two free throws and finished with 25 points and nine rebounds.

Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said O'Neal was "very doubtful" to play in San Antonio on Wednesday.

O'Neal, who leads the Pacers with 19.7 points and 9.9 boards, has been hampered by ankle, hamstring and knee injuries and the flu at various points of the season, missing nine total games.

The loss was Indiana's eighth in a row on the road and 12th in its last 13 overall. The squad hasn't won a road game since a 116-110 victory at Memphis - the worst team in the NBA - on Feb. 3. The Pacers are averaging just 82.1 points during their road losing streak and have been outscored by 15.3 points per game in those losses.

The poor run has dropped Indiana percentage points behind New Jersey and Orlando for seventh place in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

"We needed a 'W' and we fought hard all game," Pacers point guard Jamaal Tinsley said after losing to the Rockets. "But we are going to need to fight even harder. We need to find a way to win."

O'Neal's knee is messed up pretty bad. It looked like he hyperextended it the other night against the Rockets. I don't know why their coach didn't take him out immedidately.

After the past two losses, I wouldn't be so sure. But I really really want them to get this W, even though it is against a struggling Indiana team.

Another risky game @ATT against another EC lottery team, or at best, a 7/8th EC seed.

Don't get your hopes up.

The Spurs are seriousy fucked in the head this season.
Too many rings, too much money, boredom, whatever.

If the Pacers are to snap their eight-game road losing streak against one of the NBA's best teams, they'll have to do it without their best player. Jermaine O'Neal has been ruled out of tonight's game in San Antonio after tweaking a troublesome left knee injury in the fourth quarter of Tuesday night's 86-76 loss in Houston.
Already without backup centers David Harrison (shoulder) and Maceo Baston (toe) and with starting center Jeff Foster battling back spasms, the Pacers have just two healthy players in the frontcourt: Troy Murphy and Ike Diogu. Foster, who returned from a two-game absence to play 20 minutes in Houston, is listed as probable for tonight's game in his hometown.

Yeah but I'm a realist and I know that Indy can't hang with the Spurs, especially down at the AT&T Center. They've never beaten the Spurs there since it opened. Then again, Boston never did it either until Saturday. But I'm not crazy...yet.

At which point does the game get personal? Spurs sit down to dine on regular game fare, your medium-level teams, and someone comes along to snatch the meal right off their plate.
Like last year's semis.
Like the sub .500 teams this year.
Then like Bucks and Boston, snatched they dam food right out of their mouths.
At which point does it get personal and our boys begin get tougher and killer-like?

I love how the Pacers are working hard for every point, and then barry comes in and mitigates anything they've gained with 2 quick 3's.

Barry for 3!

Gee Pop should pull him...I mean Finley and Bowen are a combined 3 for 14.....

Popovich has been sucking Finley's nuts all season. And there are certain games there is no reason for Bowen to be getting many minutes...Tonight is a perfect example...he can't shoot worth a lick, and there is no one to guard.

no, and considering we're up 18 we can afford to have them on the bench

Dang Manu HAS been sucking, :lol

1-7 shots 1-5 3's..

At least he got in 5 assists.

Were they catch and shoot shots though?

ManuTim_best of Fwiendz

Maybe Manu is subconsciously trying to self-sabotage his sixth man award. Since he implied in his comments, that it's not really something he cares to get.

Nice win by the Spurs!

Great effort by Bonner, he was so close to his first double double with the Spurs.

Duncan was in the zone tonight! Did he score lots of easy layups?

Duncan should be our #1 option ALWAYS, clutch or not. Manu should be #2 when he's in the zone, and Parker should be #2 or #3 depending on how well he's playing.

Well since, Kobe > Udrih, we're clearly not ready for the playoffs. We need Beno to step up in crunch time.

Seguspur - you blow; didn't need you when we got our last two and don't need you now. If you think we can't go to war with the team we have right now, well it doesn't really f'n matter b/c that's what we have and that's what we'll win with. If you're a ture Spurs fan, you will go with the team that's in place and watch the character and teamwork prevail over much more talented (and "athletic) teams b/c they understand the program - you don't or you woulnd't waste our time with stupid remarks. The great thing about this forum is that you realize who understands the program and who wants to ride along and make stupid comments about how we could be better if we just did this or we just did that - if we only had the most winningest team in all of sports since Duncan was drafted; oh wait we do. How the hell did we get there with such a pathetic team. - Spurs Fan

I apologize....you're probably right....thank god the spurs don't have to go through milwaukee, charlotte and Boston to get to the finals... They would be really in trouble if that was the case.:D

03-22-2007, 12:26 AM
Yeah - you're right these games have ALWAYS been a factor in our playoff performance. Whew - I'm glad we don't have to face those guys in the first round. I probably shouldn't even root for the Spurs during the playoffs b/c we all know that they have no business being there. How can they compete - granted they've always been the underdog and have prevailed b/c they understand the program (unlike so many so called Spurs fans) but how can they compete without an athletic SF like Maggette? I just don't know, but at the end of the day I'll trust the idiot coaches and the idiot front office that have won 3 tiltes with an extemely low payroll compared to their success and I'll just let it ride.
