IRVING, Texas - After a two-day courtship that started with a visit and grew into extensive contract negotiations, the Cowboys signed free-agent safety Ken Hamlin to a contract Friday afternoon.

Terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but Hamlin will be available to the media this afternoon along with Cowboys owner-general manager Jerry Jones and head coach Wade Phillips.

The Cowboys wanted to add some experience to their safety corps, and Hamlin affords them that, having started 52 games over four seasons for the Seattle Seahawks, including all 16 games in 2006 after recovering from a season-ending head injury resulting from an off-field incident six games into the 2005 season.

Hamlin said he would be a perfect complement to Cowboys Pro Bowl strong safety Roy Williams, who seems to play more effectively when deployed closer to the line of scrimmage than left in a Cover 2 zone.

"Definitely, it would let Roy do his thing," Hamlin said earlier this week of lining up at free safety with Williams at strong, "and let Roy be more of a playmaker."

The Cowboys started off the 2006 season with fifth-round pick Pat Watkins starting at free safety, but after seven games decided to go back to Keith Davis, who started all 16 games in 2005. Then Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells became worried the rookie Watkins was losing his confidence after making a few rookie mistakes.

But the Cowboys went back to Watkins in the final three regular-season games and the playoff game against Seattle. He finished eighth on the team with 34 tackles and second in interceptions with three.

The Cowboys also came to an agreement Thursday with wide receiver Jamel Richardson, the free agent who decided not to re-sign with a CFL team. In 2½ seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders (39 games) - he played only four games in 2006 after breaking bones in his foot - he caught 113 passes for 1,471 yards and four touchdowns. But two of those touchdowns came in last season's first four games when he was averaging 16.9 yards a catch.

From NFL.com

The Dallas Cowboys have reached agreement with free-agent safety Ken Hamlin on a one-year, $2.5 million deal. Hamlin also had visited the Saints, but he spent the past few days trying to finalize the deal with the Cowboys. Now Hamlin and Roy Williams will form one of the most formidable safety tandems in the league.

Big Shot Blurbs
A Closer Look At Hamlin
As the Cowboys continue to pursue Ken Hamlin as a possible free-agent addition, let's take a closer look at the Seattle safety. Here's what we know:

He's big (6-2, 209). He's fast. He's physical. He's young (26). He's experienced, having started three full years in the league. A fourth year was cut short due to a season-ending head injury, but he returned last year for all 16 games. That proves he's resilient.

But here's the question you all want answered:

Can he cover?

The Cowboys already have a big, physical, hard-hitting safety. His name is Roy Williams. He needs a cover guy next to him, someone like Darren Woodson. But we all know those don't grow on trees.

In Mickey Spagnola's column, Woodson endorsed young Pat Watkins as the answer at free safety. Could Hamlin do an effective job of complementing Williams? Maybe. It was difficult to tell what he could do in the Cowboys' playoff game against Seattle. The Seahawks were so depleted at cornerback that they played their safeties deep and prayed the Cowboys didn't take shots downfield with Terry Glenn and T.O. For the most part, they didn't.

Hamlin might not be an excellent cover safety. He does have eight interceptions in 54 career regular-season games. But I certainly think a little extra free safety competition can't hurt if the Cowboys can sign Hamlin at a reasonable price. I guess a lot depends on what kind of money he expects to get.

Hamlin signing gives Cowboys potent safety pairingBy Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Unrestricted free agent safety Ken Hamlin, who returned in 2006 from a devastating head injury that limited him to just six games with the Seattle Seahawks the previous season, on Friday reached a contract agreement with the Dallas Cowboys.

Hamlin, 26, will sign a one-year, $2.5 million contract. The four-year veteran, who spent his entire career with the Seahawks before going into the free agent market earlier this month, was one of the top unrestricted players remaining.

The former Arkansas standout, who visited earlier this week with Cowboys officials and coaches, was rated as the No. 22 player available in free agency by ESPN.com. He was one of only three players among the top 30 free agents still unsigned.

The addition of Hamlin, who will pair with Pro Bowl strong safety Roy Williams, should provide Dallas with one of the top safety tandems in the league. Hamlin will likely play free safety, which will enable Williams to play closer to the line of scrimmage. That will permit the Cowboys to better camouflage Williams' deficiencies in pass coverage.

"Definitely, it will let Roy do his thing," Hamlin said.

Locating a viable free safety, and a solid complement to the physical Williams, has been a problem for the Cowboys. The team began last season with rookie Pat Watkins playing the position, then switched to Keith Davis, who started all 16 games in 2005.

Hamlin isn't a pure ballhawk, but possesses more free safety-type attributes than Williams, and can play the middle of the field, which should improve the Dallas coverage scheme.

A second-round choice in the 2003 draft, Hamlin has 298 tackles, eight interceptions, 22 passes defensed, four sacks, four forced fumbles and one recovery in 54 games. In 2005, he was involved in a fight outside a Seattle night spot and suffered a fractured skull and other head injuries that forced him onto the non-football injury list after just six games. Hamlin returned to start all 16 games in 2006 and recorded a career-best 96 tackles, along with three interceptions, eight passes defensed, and two sacks.

In addition to the Cowboys, he was pursued by New Orleans, but clearly wanted to sign with Dallas after visiting there this week.

Hamlin might not be an excellent cover safety. He does have eight interceptions in 54 career regular-season games.

This is the argument about coverage skills that I have never understood. That a guy picks off some passes (and 8 in 54 career games isn't particularly exceptional) isn't an indication that he covers well. It might equally be an indication that he gets out of position and gambles, but occasionally comes up big.

After all, Roy Williams has 17 career interceptions in 80 career regular season games. I don't think anyone who knows anything about football would say that Roy Williams has any sort of commendable coverage skills, though.

Hamlin is a big name, relatively speaking, because he's been a good tackler for Seattle when he's been healthy and has played a big role on defense for an upper-tier team. But with a contract of that size and a new head coach who lacks the clout to ignore Jerry Jones, I can't imagine that Hamlin won't start at free safety. And I can't imagine that the Cowboys coverage when playing basic coverages (whether basic man schemes or things like 2 and 3) will improve at all.

Your kidding right? You give an old lb a 5 year 25 mill contract, bring back in the failure known as Fred Smoot, and bring in another safety that cant cover in Stoutmire, yeah, he gets it now

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. Hamlin might not be the best safety ever, but if your trying to tell me that a 10 year older Stoutmire is as good as Hamlin you are truly an idiot. And if Smoot is so good, why was a Viking team that desperately needs corners willing to let him go? By the way, Fletcher wasnt an All Pro last year, or even in the Pro Bowl, which are 2 different things

Lets talk about it. Look at what other guys at his position were getting this offseason. Dockery, Walker, Petigout, all getting huge contracts without the youth or potential of Davis. The Redskins were trying there hardest to sign him as well, but couldnt get the deal done because they cant do anything right. He might not have had the best career up to this point, but niether did a lot of guys in Arizona, then blossomed after getting traded.

Yea I am going to have to go with Mardigan on this one. A lot of players leave arizona and do much better. Leonard davis got paid because of the availability , supply and demand is not that hard to understand. He will automatically look much better than he did in Arizona because he will not have shit around him. He will not be near as exposed as he was in Arizona. I agree he is not an pro bowler and has underachieved, but it is hard to not underachieve when the orginization you are apart of has underachieved for years. He will be motivated and have other guys who are better than him to push him, he will be good.

IRVING, Texas - Darn Darren Woodson.

Darn Jimmy Johnson.

Darn Jerry Jones.

The fault is all theirs. To me, they're the reason why the Cowboys can't find a suitable safety. They're the reason why you guys can't get safety off your minds. They're the reason why it appears the Cowboys struggle so at the safety position.

Face it, we're spoiled. For 12 years safety was never a problem. Didn't matter if James Washington was back there or Thomas Everett or Brock Marion or George Teague or Omar Stoutmire or Izell Reese or Roy Williams.

As long as Woody was back there.

I'm telling you, spoiled rotten. And even though he hasn't played the past three seasons, because of the void created by his absence - as long as the Lincoln Tunnel and as wide as the Mississippi - no one has forgotten Darren Woodson.

Need someone to drop in the box to play the run? Get Woody.

Need someone to play Cover 2? Woody was your man.

Need a safety to drop into the slot on the nickel and go one-on-one with the opponent's top receiver? Get Woody.

Need someone to reroute receivers and sink into zone? No problem, Woody.

Need someone to run your defense, get guys lined up and tip them off to what was about to happen? I'm telling you, Woody.

"That was the convenience they had," Woodson says modestly. "That allowed us to blitz, come up and cover or play the run like a strong safety."

Not "that," but him, a football man for all positions, something former Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson recognized back in 1992 when the Cowboys used a second-round pick to select this hybrid linebacker out of Arizona State, thinking they could convert him to a safety but really not knowing for sure.

That's why Woodson spent his rookie season playing in the slot on the nickel and special teams, that's it. Johnson figured the conversion from run-around college linebacker to NFL safety would be too much for one so young, especially on a team destined for greatness.

Ha, big mistake, and Johnson would tell me that a few years later, that had he known Woodson was so smart and so dedicated and prepared so well, he would have asked him to do much more that first season. He thought it had been a waste of talent.

"It was a big adjustment," Woodson admitted.

But he had been properly prepared. You might not have known this, but his position coach at Arizona State just happened to be one Lovie Smith. Yep, that Lovie Smith, at the time the Sun Devils' linebackers coach.

"He made me go cover with the corners in practice," said Woodson, having spent the past two seasons working mid-week for ESPN after unsuccessfully recovering from back surgery during that 2004 season. "I did all the drills," meaning covering wide receivers, running backs out of the backfield and tight ends.

Then when he got to Dallas, "Jimmy forced me to go cover with the corners."

So that rookie season, while serving his safety apprenticeship, Woody worked on the scout team . . . at cornerback. That meant he was being asked to cover the likes of Michael Irvin and Alvin Harper. And back in those days, the scout team played much more competitively in practice than those guys do these days. They just weren't the Harlem Globetrotters' lackey Washington Generals as they mostly are nowadays.

Then when he took over as the strong safety starter in 1993, turning Washington into a nickel safety, Woodson was the team's defensive ombudsman. Oh sure, he played strong safety, but when the Cowboys went to nickel, he simply moved into the slot, and it didn't matter if some Jerry Rice was there or not, he covered one-on-one. That allowed the deep safeties to help the corners, too, but also preserved the threat of a blitz off the slot and a guy sturdy enough to play the run if those sneaky draws were called.

"It was a convenience not to play a third corner," Woodson said. "Now (the way the Cowboys played it) you got to bring in another corner (Aaron Glenn), move (Terence) Newman into the slot, and it's obvious what you're doing."

He means, Newman is covering. Because if Newman is asked to blitz, then you got either Roy Williams or Pat Watkins or Keith Davis taking the slot receiver. Not on your life.

Woody uses the word "convenience." Me, I choose luxury, and one Jones certainly appreciated, and went out of his way financially to ensure. He never let Woodson never leave The Ranch. In fact, the owner and his head coach, Bill Parcells, tried luring Woodson out of retirement when the Cowboys sprung a leak at safety the past two years.

After all, when you are used to a certain lifestyle . . . .

And that leads us to today's Cowboys searching, as far as I'm concerned, in vain for a safety in Woodson's mold. Just don't think that cat exits, and have this distinct feeling they come around maybe once a decade or two.

So they try to do the best they can pairing someone up with Williams, who just doesn't have the speed or speedy recognition to be an asset in coverage. So far they have gone through Tony Dixon, Lynn Scott, Keith Davis, Patrick Watkins, Marcus Coleman and Tony Parrish.

That's why four-year veteran Ken Hamlin was in on Wednesday for a visit, and the club has begun contract negotiations with his agent, Kennard McGruire. He's at least been a 52-game starter at Seattle, but the Cowboys must ask themselves why the Seahawks decided to let him walk in free agency and instead sign safeties Deon Grant and Brian Russell to contracts totaling nearly $15 million in guaranteed money. The reason wasn't money, or cap space.

As far as Woodson is concerned, Hamlin is just a bigger Keith Davis, a guy who can give you what you want playing in the box against the run but with limited coverage skills. Certainly not a guy who can jump into the slot in coverage nor be left in a whole lot of single-safety high coverage while Williams prowls around underneath.

For Woodson's money, Watkins is the guy.

"He has more upside than any safety out there," Woodson said. "They just need to give him time. He was a rookie, and he made some rookie mistakes."

This is not to say Watkins is the next Woodson. But let's face it, Watkins was but a fifth-round draft choice, and the Cowboys asked him to start nine games this year, along with one in the playoffs. That's a lot of responsibility for a 23-year-old kid. Woodson, a second-round pick, started two games his rookie season, and he went on to five Pro Bowl appearances.

But the Cowboys should remember they made a nine-start investment in Watkins, and really, when he regained his starting job the final three games of the season he looked much more comfortable out there and his play vastly improved.

"They just got to tell him, 'You are the quarterback of the defense and you got to become more vocal,'" Woodson said of Watkins. "It doesn't matter that Aaron Glenn is out there or Terence Newman or Roy Williams. He has to take over and line guys up.

"Roy's not going to line guys up, and he doesn't communicate much out there. They just got to tell him you got to be the leader. He's the guy with the abilities. He can run."

There, Woodson has spoken, but he's earned the right to speak on this subject. He's the reason the Cowboys are in this safety predicament.

Darn him. Why couldn't he have played for 20 years, or until the next him came around?

This is actually not a bad signing for the Cowboys. All your observations are right about Hamlin. He's a big hitter, run stopper, punishes WR's, but his coverage skills are lacking. He's not horrible at pass coverage, but nothing to write home about. You will be happy with what he brings, and since his contract is not huge it's a good signing. As for why the Seahawks let him go, it doesn't speak bad about Hamlin, it's just that they decided to go with Boulware instead (not a contract year, no head injury). They were just to similar in style and didn't play well together. Hamlin will help out, no doubt.

Wouldn't the Skins need a QB that can put together at least 2yrs of decent play? :lol
Washington, Detroit, Vikings....they'll all in the same league, SHITTY.

WTF? does that have to do with anything? Is that all you got??

Truth hurt? :lol
Someone getting a little defensive about a simple comment shows a serious lack faith in your team. Oh well Skins fans, there is always 2008 and beyond, but your team will prob fuck that yr up too. :lol

The Dallas D line and Linebackers won't get to the QB every fucking time. They will need a safety that can cover and so far they don't have one that can. These are two good run stopping, pass rushing safetys but they can't cover shit.

alot of Dallas's problem was they didn't have a pass rush for shit.

Exposing the downfield defenders.

Rush he QB's , guys like Newman and others have a better and easier shot at covering.

IMO, losing Ellis is what got them knocked out of he playoffs, and possibly going to the Super Bowl.

Im not convinced that this move will help Dallas at all. Roy Williams is the most overrated player we have ever had in this era of professional sports. as long as he is on the team they will never win a championship. TO is not the receiver he used to be, and Romo is shaken and forever will be shaken by the Seattle game. he will never get over the stress. i see the Cowboys going no better than 1-15

For the price we got Hamlin, its a great signing. He either shores up that spot, or he gets beat out by Watkins and is a bench warmer.

Scheme (Phillips v. Parcells) will play a huge role in the improvement of our defense this year.

Never hurts to sign a player to that kind of contract.

A day late buddy I made that comment cause it had no relevance to what was being said. COWBOYS are reaching like the Skins used to but I think the skins have learned finally that blowing big money on old or unproven fatties(davis) dont work. Good luck with them Boy's they will need it. By the way being a skins fan in SA I have to be thick skinned nothing hurts my feelings so come up with something else.. Tony Homo RULES! :king

My guess is that the mere presence of Hamlin will force W-A-T-K-I-N-S (Who the fuck is Watson?) to step it up. Competition is good and my money is on the kid but I'm sure the coaches would rather have the vet in there..

Hey it's a very good deal for The Cowboys it is a no lose deal IMO.

fuck it...i'll wait till the season to talk about the shitskins. Any fan from that franchise should not talk about any team's offseason moves whatsoever. And no, you haven't learned shit. You are now trying to trade your number 6 for Lance Briggs. YOU STILL DON'T FUCKIN GET IT.

By not making bone-headed signings like that big O-Lineman from Arizona and a semi-talented knucklehead like Hamlin.
Two Pro Bowl births later, looks like the Boys really did make some bone headed moves.
