Report: Tito Ortiz vs. Dana White Boxing Match Cancelled

The Dana White-Tito Ortiz boxing match we discussed earlier today has apparently been called off after Ortiz failed to show up for yesterday’s event weigh-ins. And according to a comment Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Keith Kizer made to The Fight Network, a make-up date probably won’t be announced.

White and Ortiz were supposed to weigh in yesterday for today’s bout, which was granted to Ortiz as part of last year’s contract negotiations to rejoin the UFC. White, the UFC’s president and formerly Ortiz’s manager, is a one-time amateur boxer and agreed to the exhibition bout last year.

Since then, the event has been plagued by a delays, largely because the NSAC demanded that they oversee the bout. With the fight finally regulated and the participants licensed, the much-hyped event seemed to have finally had the green light for this weekend.

However, that all changed to when Ortiz apparently failed to weigh in at the predetermined time with no explanation why.

Another write-up:

ORTIZ PULLS PUNCHES
Fighter No-Shows Weigh-Ins for Boxing Showdown Today With UFC Promoter White

By Loretta Hunt ([email protected])

Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Tito Ortiz failed to appear yesterday to weigh in for an exhibition boxing match scheduled to take place today at noon at the Ultimate Fighter Training Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ortiz’s intended opponent, Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White, did step onto the scales and recorded a weight of 197 pounds, an allowable one-pound differential to the 196-pound limit set by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Ortiz would have been required to weigh in at 205 pounds for the three-round, three-minute stand-up bout.

The no-show was just another turn in what has become a mixed martial arts attraction paralleling what one could see in pro wrestling’s World Wrestling Entertainment storylines.

A disgruntled Ortiz, 32, has publicly stated he’d asked the boxing bout be added when he renegotiated his contract with the UFC organization in 2005. Prior to taking the helm of the UFC, 37-year-old White has acted as the dynamic fighter’s manager. The pair has both publicly vocalized their differences, but had agreed to leave it in the ring after the promoter-fighter showdown.

The bout had already been postponed once late last year when the NSAC intervened claiming it had jurisdiction to oversee it.

On March 5, the NSAC had voted 3-1 to allow the exhibition bout. World-renowned boxing referee Jay Nady has been assigned to officiate, says NSAC Executive Keith Kizer; while the venue’s resident Octagon had been removed and replaced with a boxing ring for today’s event. Kizer had watched White spar one week ago and gave final approval that day. Both applicants had agreed to wear head gear and use standard 10 ounce gloves, says Kizer.

“I’m not going to recommend this bout to the Commission again,” Kizer said today. “I’m very surprised Mr. Ortiz didn’t show up without as much as a phone call. It was a waste of me and my staff’s time.”

Kizer says that White had told him he’d received a voicemail from Ortiz two days prior saying he would “let him off the hook” but believed that to be pre-fight banter and that the bout was still on. Kizer says no disciplinary action will be pursued.

Spike TV has been documenting both participants’ preparations for the bout that was to have been broadcasted on the Internet with the majority of the proceeds going to charity. The cable channel still plans to air the documentary at a later time.

Neither White nor Ortiz could be reached for comment.

I doubt Tito is scared of Dana, but he probably didn't care much about it. Tito wanted the fight in the first place. I really wanted to see this to... :(

I wonder why they would air that again unless there is a fight date to be announced?

It's never aired...they spent the money to make it so I guess they feel like they should air it...

Tito speaks out:

"Dana White has once again taken the low road and decided to try to damage my reputation and credibility in a public forum. During an appearance on Spike TV on April 12th White accused me of failure to show up for a fight we had originally scheduled for March 24th. He did so at the end of the program and gave me no opportunity to respond or tell the real story, which is simply this: White was fully informed well in advance of March 24th that I would not fight without a contract, which White refused to sign.

Fighting is my livelihood and jeopardizing my body without a full understanding of conditions, doesn't make any sense. No professional fighter will go into a risky match without a contract. :lol

I've struggled to get respect and dignity for my profession and I do it in the way I lead my life as a fighter and as a human being. Dana's attitude not only disrespects me, but all fighters. I am taking this stand just not for this one incident, but for all future champions.

I want to reiterate: I am ready to settle my differences with Dana White in any fighting forum we can agree on, but only if there is a signed contract that stipulates where the money is going, whether it is to charity or to the fighters doesn't matter as much as having a definitive agreement.

Until Dana White is ready to fight me on a professional basis, I strongly urge him to keep his mouth shut."

:spin I guess Tito is scared if he considers a match with Dana to be risky. I call bullshit on what Tito says.

:lmao

Now I really know Tito's full of it. Does he think dating that nasty old porn queen is going to bring "respect and dignity" for his profession?
