The Portland Trail Blazers (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/teams/trail_blazers) signed Kevin Pritchard on Thursday to a five-year contract as their new general manager, according to a league source. The agreement was to be officially announced at the Blazers-Grizzlies game Thursday night in Portland.
Pritchard had been the Blazers' director of player personnel under team president and GM Steve Patterson, who was relieved of those duties earlier this month.
Insiders credit Pritchard with engineering the Blazers' flurry of draft-night moves that landed Rookie of the Year favorite Brandon Roy (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/players/4134) as well as big man LaMarcus Aldridge (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/players/4130) and point guard Sergio Rodriguez (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/players/4155), who together have brought hope to the franchise.
Those moves in turn helped strengthen Pritchard's relationship with owner Paul Allen, the insiders add.
Pritchard is expected to hire an assistant who is experienced in contract negotiations and working with the salary cap.
The Blazers are also expected to hire a team president to handle the business end of the operation.
