State Scrambles to Regulate "Remote Hunting"
LAST UPDATE: 11/19/2004 7:14:13 AM
Posted By: Jim Forsyth

Texas wildlife officials are scrambling to stop a San Antonio businessman from putting up a web site which would allow people anywhere in the world to shoot Texas white tail deer on a south Texas ranch on the Internet, 1200 WOAI news reported today.

"We don't have any regulations on the books right now that pertain to this specific activity," Tom Harvey of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission told 1200 WOAI news.

John Lockwood of 'live-shot dot com' told 1200 WOAI news they will mount cameras on a platform which will give on line hunters a 360 degree view of the ranch, which they say only is located in 'southwest Texas.' A rifle mounted on a platform could then be manipulated by the hunter at the keyboard, similar to the way weapons are manipulated by players in video games. When the hunter sees the deer appear on the computer screen, he could fire the gun by remote control by using a keyboard command. Attendants at the ranch would then retrieve the carcass, dress it, and mail the on line hunter the antlers and the venison.

"Prior to coming to my web site you would have to purchase a license to hunt in Texas, and pay for a three hour block of time," Lockwood said. "During that time, only you would be able to control the gun and the camera."

"We absolutely oppose this, we think this is totally unethical," said Kirby Brown, Vice President of the Texas Wildlife Association, the hunters and landowners lobbying organization. He called 'live-shot dot com' 'disgusting.'

Harvey said TPW regulators are considering passing a rule that would stop 'live-shot dot com.'

"Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is looking at the possibility of regulating remote controlled hunting," he said. "One of the possibilities is a rule that would require that you be physically present to hunt."

He said Internet hunters would likely not have hunting licenses, which would also make it illegal for them to shoot deer in Texas.

Lockwood said the web site would be popular with disabled hunters unable to get out into the woods, or people who simply could not afford to travel to the trophy ranches of southwest Texas.

"I heard for a disabled veteran who was just in tears," Lockwood said. "He was afraid he would never be able to hunt again, but now he knows he will be able to go hunting."

But Brown says on line hunting is not hunting.

"You have to be there, you have to experience the outdoors, you have to be at the hunting operation at the site."

He says the TWA has already contacted lawmakers about passing laws banning the practice.

"We have already been in discussions with lawmakers to see if we can't stop this across the board," Brown said.

What if some sick bastard wanted to shoot other people in the area...how will they know who took the shot?

I hunt, a lot, and although I don't agree with it, I don't think that there's anything that anyone can do to stop it.

Bu then again, I don't agree with ranches charging $10K and up for a "trophy" animal that comes running up to the side of a truck when one of the hands slaps the side of the truck to announce feeding time either.

I would bet that the venture isn't long lived.

we should mount some of these camera-guns on the highways in Iraq where the insurgents keep planting bombs...I would certainly sign up for my three hour shift...

Sometimes I feel guilty about shooting a deer or hog that comes running to the Pavlovian feeder going off sound...but then that nice chicken-fried backstrap makes me forget all about it.

"That's awful" = remote control hunting. Not *regular* hunting. I enjoy a thick, juicy piece of meat as much as the next person. :)

Bah

People who buy their meats in the grocery stores and than gripe about other folks actually working for their kills disgust me.

You people are nothing more than scavengers and carrion feeders who deserve nothing more than the scorn and disdain deservedly heaped upon you. You let other people do the killing for you and then cry foul over how your sustenance was provided to you. You are underserving of the natural predation role given to you by nature.

Begone with you and your ilk!

Wenches! Fetch me and my men your finest grog and beer for our horses! Prepare for us a table of your finest wines and cheeses and bring to us your most voluptous and buxom women so that we may press them into our arms and pleasure ourselves as real men should!

*Editors note: The preceeding rant was done without ample supply of morning coffee and should not be viewed by anyone as a presonal attack, rather the incoherent ramblings of a man who ain't hit shit with his bow this year and is tired of his wife nagging him to get some meat in the freezer (yea, I got some meat for you.....grumblegrumblebitchandmoan)*

I don't get what is so bad about this. I think it'sd an awesome idea ... if pulled off correctly. Of course you can't let people shoot the people manning the fields, but that is possible to do.

I've gone hunting plenty of times and I think this method would take even more strategy and skill than doing it "live".

1369
11-19-2004, 04:50 PM
You're kidding, right Tim?

There is an awful lot more "strategy" involved in hunting a live animal, on the ground with him, than there is in sitting behind a monitor in the warmth of your house, in a comfortable chair, ham and cheese sammich on your lap, remotely piloting a rifle.

Besides, doesn't look like this will last long, if at all.

That sounds just as bad as going on one of those "guided" hunts were the guide is drenched in deer urine and they go to the feeding ground and you sit there and blow the deer away with guns that could kill an elephant.

1369
11-19-2004, 04:57 PM
I don't disagree with you at all there Tim.

Useruser666
11-19-2004, 04:58 PM
If that kind of hunt would be allowed then I should just be able to set up dear traps. Just set the m up and come back at sunrise and pick your dear up.

Also, if these people are in some other country then will they even use the animal? This is worse than hunting for the blind.

1369
11-19-2004, 05:03 PM
User, the web site stated that they (The offeror of the service) would process the meat and give it/donate it to a local animal shelter if the purchaser did not want it.

Presently, they would only be able to offer non-native species (Axis/Fallow/Sika/etc.) and non-game animals (Feral Hogs/etc) to be shot.

Presently, you cannot use traps to take a game animal.

Besides, do you really think that someone is going to pay $5.95 per ten minutes to actually do this?

Compared to "real" hunting, this dot com thing seems horrible. But there are far too many other shady hunting practices that need addressing before they try to take this down. I imagine killing a deer with your keyboard would still be somewhat of a challenge ... espcially compared to those stocked ranches you can find around here.

I'm actually all for the challenge. I hate stocked ranches and lakes. Give me a bow and a natural field or a fly rod and a river and I'm set.

Third, this would break the actual laws that are on the books. You have to enforce those first, then do a better job to stop canned hunting and the like.
