So I just rented this DVD. Incredible. What did you guys think of it? It was very violent but probably pretty accurate. DeCaprio is probably one of the best actors alive, even though he will always be a pussy after that Titanic shit. If you haven't seen it, go rent it. You won't be disappointed.

Leos accent alomst single handedly ruined this movie. It was the same story hear 20 times in movies, and I honestly thought that if it hadnt been for all the explosions and violence, that it would have been a p.o.s.

I wasn't crazy about it, and this comes from a big time Leo DiCaprio fan. I was shocked he got nominated for this (he was good but his accent sounded awful...plus his performance here pales in comparison to what he did in The Departed). All in all it was okay, not great. Djimon Hounsou is becoming one of my favorite actors though.

Plus, I'm always a bit cynical anytime a movie gets made simply because Kanye West rapped about the subject matter.

I'm pretty sure the movie wasn't made because Kanye West rapped about it. In fact the song was originally just about Roc-A-Fella and it wasn't until after he made the song did he even know about Sierra Leone and the civil war.

I almost don't want to see it at all because of Leo's horrible accents. The reason he did so good in the Departed is because he didn't attempt the Boston accent (Thank God!). The guy is a talented actor, but the lack of ability to transform his voice to fit key roles is a big hit his credibility...to me at least.

i remember when Leo was on Growing Pains.

Haven't seen this movie, but he was excellent in The Departed.

I saw "Blood Diamond" and I thought it was excellent. Hounsou was incredible. I think he cries even better, and more freely, than Terrence Howard does (if that's possible).

I thought DiCaprio was good. There were a couple of times where it seemed like he slipped out of his South African accent but not as badly as some of you South African Accent Specialists seem to think.

From a South African Website...they seem to think Leo was SA-OK.

Blood Diamond: Leo’s gem of an SA accent!

Finally Hollywood has brought through its ranks someone who can pull off a South African accent without getting laughed off stage. This has been a point of some concern for South Africans who have seen their lovely accent slaughtered in films like Lethal Weapon 2 and Mission Impossible 2.

It seems to always be racist villains that get lumbered with the task, that and cheesy action sequels. An exception was “the interpreter”, where Nicole Kidman, wisely stayed away from doing a “full blown” rendition and opted for a softer inferred accent. Even so it was still a little crap, and if Nicole Kidman can’t pull it off then who can. Remember she kissed Tom “alien lover“ Cruise with a straight face!.

Strangely enough, South African actors in Hollywood, never get to use their elusive and enigmatic voice in films. Arnold Vosloo was “the Mummy” in the “The Mummy” and would have been much scarier if he was Afrikaans. Charlize Theron, would have been far more believable as a serial-killer-lesbian, if she spoke like us.

Apparently Leo is the man we were waiting for. Leonardo Dicaprio, is the first to my knowledge that has managed to get the subtle guttural tones without it sounding parodic or just plain silly.

He also went one step further to mimic the “meat eating” body language of our fair nation. Our hats are off to him and he is welcome back any time. What is funny though is that American critics slated his accent as being too affected, hehe.

Actually while he was here filming, my wife bumped into him at the Diesel shop at the V&A Waterfront, the shop assistants were all in a tizz and dragged up rails from the other diesel shops and closed the doors for a private shopping spree. The pressure!. Its got to be annoying, maybe he was just going in to ask where the toilets were: Wheh aah thu toyluts, bru”?

Also, this regarding his homework...

Working on the Accent: DiCaprio captured the South African accent by spending a lot of time with the locals. DiCaprio said, “…Drinking beers with them, hearing their stories - a lot of guys from the South African military. I got to hang out with this guy [who was] really a sort of military expert and just listening to them talk. And, of course, I had an accent coach and he was there guiding me through it. But we had conversations with these people, listening to their stories, [and] made them say sentences over and over again. That’s just the kind of thing you do.

I wanted to definitely go to Africa early, because that whole area was completely alien to me. I had never really spent any time in Africa, let alone [with] a white South African man and their stories and accents. It was completely alien when I first heard of the film. It was about going there.”

Well that article was fine and dandy, but his accent still sucked. I have a couple friends from SA and Leos accent was very, very far off from what I expected. And a couple of times? No, he slipped in and out of that accent quite often throughout the movie

Did your friends from "ZA" see the movie? If so, what were their opinions of Leo's accent?

I'm not a huge DiCaprio fan but I did read somewhere that he really did impress some of those from South Africa with his attempt at their local accent and expressions. I think someone described it as a mix of Rhodesian and South African, which corresponds with the movie character. I'll see if it is on the net somewhere.

I see, so the article is alright, but your opinion is fact huh? Bullshit! I thought DiCaprio did a very good job with the accent. Granted I'm not THAT familiar with south africans, I've only met a few, but from everything I've read it seems the man did alright. Ofcourse, I could be mistaken cause mardigan and his friends know better.

His Boston accent bothered me WAY more than his South African accent, but I didn't think either were that bad.

Liked this movie in general, but thought the romance was a bit cheesy and unnecessary. Djimon Hounsou remains one of my favorite actors and absolutely commands attention every time he's on screen. And NOT just because he's gorgeous.

Yea, and that was my opinion, DiCaprio sucked in that movie, thanks for the sarcasm though, very well done

Back to the topic at hand, I thought Blood Diamond was a good flick right up to the preachy bullshit at the end.
