Fucking fools fired Stan Heath, to hire another mid-major unproven nobody.

I'll start.

JFB is such a fucking hick, he had to get rid of the black to hire the white before he left.

Altman's not exactly a nobody. But it's not clear that he's ever going to be a guy to get somebody to the Final Four.

I don't follow the Razorbacks that closely, but didn't Heath turn them around from being pretty bad?

I dunno anything about Altman. All i know about Arkansas is that Houston Nutt has all but ruined that football program. They could be competing for a national title next year, instead it's gonna be McFadden for Heisman and not much else.

Well, it's not like he's done "nothing." He's turned Creighton into one of the 3 or 4 best mid-majors in the country.

He made a few NITs and an NCAA tournament with a KSU team that was dealing with its entire budget being funnelled into football (and this was at a time when most believe that he wasn't ready to be a head coach).

As an assistant, he was also responsible for landing Mitch Richmond and the majority of Lon Kruger's 1988 Elite 8 team.

Yeah when Nolan left so did our big time recruiting class he had. Heath started from scratch. Discovered Brewer himself though.

HAHA Looks like Altman may not be coming...If you cant get Creighton's coach who can you get.

Dana Altman is heading back to Creighton.

Altman, who left to take the job at Arkansas on Monday morning, has decided not to go to Fayetteville after all, according to a pair of industry sources close to the situation.

Altman, 48, has spent the last 13 years at Creighton and was 260-141 in his tenure.

Arkansas missed out on Billy Gillispie and outgoing athletic director Frank Broyles turned his attention to Altman earlier this week.

Altman took the job, went to Arkansas yesterday and then changed his mind this morning.

Phone calls placed to Altman were not immediately returned.

Altman was believed to be at least the Razorbacks' sixth target. Arkansas officials reportedly offered the job to Texas A&M's Billy Gillespie, Kansas' Bill Self, Southern California's Tim Floyd, Memphis' John Calipari and Marquette's Tom Crean, who each turned the job down.

Sorry, Brutalis. This has gone from ridiculous to downright sad. Any coincidence that all six of these dudes from the story are white?

I'd go after VCU's Anthony Grant now - really, who else is left besides guys like Tommy Amaker and Ricardo Patton? Problem here is, Stan Heath is better than all three of them.

There's another problem with those last four names that might prevent them from getting hired in Fayetteville, too.

Mr. Body
04-03-2007, 08:01 PM
All those mentioned names are in better situations than Arkansas. The Razorbacks may be shooting too high. They need to go for the Sidney Lowes of the world and aim a little lower.

ShoogarBear

Altman was a reasonable choice, because the potential at Arkansas is clearly higher than what you can hope to do at Creighton. Same for VCU and probably Marquette (although Crean no doubt has his sights higher).

Publicly going after Gillispie, Floyd, and Self was stupid.

Mr. Body

Marquette has a more storied history than Arkansas, if Arkansas thinks of themselves as a storied program. Going after Floyd, with Mayo coming in, and Self, who is at a top place in Kansas, was questionable. But I'm not sure how hard they pushed. They need to pull another mid-major somewhere, but something about that program reeks right now.

arK - 6 Final Four (41, 45, 78, 90, 94, 95), 1 NC (94)I completely forgot about the FF's in the 40s.

On that basis, Arky has a much richer BB tradition than Marquette.

Not to mention a crapload more money.

Mr. Body
04-04-2007, 11:03 AM
Throw out the final fours in the 40s. Nolan Richardson still craps the Arkansas bed and Al McGuire for Marquette was peerlessly enjoyed and respected, so perhaps that accounts for the difference in perception for the programs. Marquette probably enjoys a lot more TV exposure for being in the Big East, etc.

Big East gets more ESPN coverage because of the contracts they have, and we all know how much ESPN loves to bombard their viewers with whatever conference they have the rights to (Big East, ACC, Big 10). CBS airs all the SEC games, but that's typically only on Saturdays where as ESPN airs games practically every night. That being said, living in SEC country (Arkansas) I can say that every single SEC game is televised no matter what teams are playing, so they definitely get their fair share of coverage. But as far as national exposure goes saying the Big East gets more TV coverage is a fair statement, mainly due to ESPN.

What a joke. Marquette doesn't even come close to Arkansas' tradition.

When Arkansas is good and fairly competitive in football or basketball, it's a big deal.

Nobody gives a fuck what Marquette does. They can't even field a football team, and with the exception of Hoop Dreams and Dwyane Wade, nobody knows or cares much about their basketball team either.

Publicly no. Seriously yes. Arkansas just wanted to present itself with a bang like any major school.

Publicly is the issue though to begin with. Honestly right now there isn't much to pick from to begin with compared to the last 20 or so years of college basketball and as bad as Nutt and JFB have hurt the football team it has poured over.

I think you are not edumacated or just ignorant in Arkansas basketball tradition.

Firstly we have had 22 All Americans, including Joe Johnson, Sidney Moncrief, Alvin Robertson, Darrell Walker, Corliss Williamson are a few. Cdub aka Big Nasty was Joakim Noah. Times two.

Made 26 of the last 31 tournys.
Where Eddie Sutton became Eddie Sutton.

I can go on. But let me mention '40 Minutes of Hell' and ask anyone up on college basketball in the 90s. Everyone knew who brought it and who invented it. Final Four 90' (30-5), Regional Final in 91' upset in the tourny (34-4), yadda yadda 31-3 champs with the Thurmon Three to send home Grant Hill and Christian Laettner 32-7 the next losing to UCLA in the title game. I can go back to Sutton if ya want. Maybe Glen Rose first era?

What about the place we did it in. Bud Walton Arena. In it's first year we went 16-0 won the title and have been 180-40 since.

I can go on.

Brutalis

Anyways.

Arkansas is returning all of it's starters.

DPOY Steven Hill (NBA bound)
Charles MANIMAL Thomas who finished the last 3 games injured.
SEC ROY Patrick Beverly from Chicago
2006 JRC POY Sonny Weems who came on strong to finish the year

are our best. Everybody is coming back, all we need is some recruiting again. Ronnie Brewer wasn't supposed to leave last summer, pretty much let everyone know he was staying til the last 2 months. Last year was our 'title run' but it didn't work out cause RB left and Heath didn't recruit enough last year at all other than Weems and Beverly which are 2 nice starters now, one of which will be in the pro's.

The Arkansas job is not bad. We have money, facilities, and over 3.5 million fans. It's all because of this huge shadow JFB brings with him to pretty much scare the shit if not disgust everyone at how past prime he is. And his lil friendship with Houston Dale Nutt has shown the whole country what kind of shit the fans must be feeling.

Want to know how bad it is? My uncle is from Ft. Worth, huge UT fan, sickens me. Well we never get along about sports and he actually called me and told me how it's 'his turn' to lend support to the Hogs. Mainly cause I rooted for UT to butcher USC although I didn't think it'd happen. Now he says I hope those anarchists get out soon cause the only reason you guys are in the media so much is because you're a major respectable school. Coming from my fucking Uncle Texas!!!! Man!!!!!!!

The job isn't bad. It's just a big load of pressure and a drag when some old bitch is breathing fire down your back and some hick football coach is singing 'oo im saved i lub mcfadden' next door with a banjo.

Okay, the latest rumors I've heard from another mailing list is that the NCAA is currently investigating the Arkansas program and the school withheld the extent of the investigation from Altman until after he accepted the job. When faced with possible loss of scholarships and/or probation, Altman felt he hadn't been presented all the facts and backed out.

Again, I have no substantiation for this, and Altman had previously flirted with other programs only to back out (although he'd never actually accepted another job before).
