View Full Version : Spurs (52-21) v. Sonics (30-43) Game Blog

The San Antonio Spurs try to continue their dominance of the Seattle SuperSonics in 2006-07 when the teams complete their season series Tuesday night.

San Antonio (52-21) is 3-0 against Seattle (30-43), winning by an average of more than 30 points. The Spurs have shot at least 52 percent and held the SuperSonics to less than 80 points in all three games.

Seattle star Ray Allen played in the first two meetings, but the team learned he would be out for the season due to ankle surgery before being routed 120-79 by the Spurs on March 25. San Antonio made a season-high 16 3-pointers, scored 67 second-half points and handed the SuperSonics their biggest home loss since 1985.

The last two victories in the series have been so easy for San Antonio that it hasn't had to use any player longer than 30 minutes.

The Sonics have also dropped seven straight visits to San Antonio, including three playoff games. Only one of those games was decided by less than 10 points.

San Antonio has nine games left to try to catch Phoenix for the second-best record in the NBA. The Spurs had their six-game winning snapped with a 100-99 loss at Indiana on Sunday to fall three games behind the Suns.

"Every loss hurts," guard Manu Ginobili said. "Especially, down the stretch of the season ... and we're trying to catch the Suns for second seed, yeah it hurts."

The Spurs' execution was lacking down the stretch Sunday as they blew a late eight-point lead. They missed all four shots from the field and 4-of-7 free throws, and committed two turnovers in the final 3:42.

"From our point of view, I thought it was a pathetic performance for a team that's trying to prepare to go into the playoffs," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "In the fourth quarter, I thought we played embarrassing basketball. It was a very disappointing loss. A pathetic, pathetic performance."

All-Star forward Tim Duncan matched a season high with seven turnovers, although he posted his 41st double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Duncan spent much of the game complaining to the officials and received a technical foul in the third quarter.

"They were allowed to be very physical and got away with a lot of stuff," he said. "They used it to their advantage."

Ginobili made 4-of-11 shots for 13 points and is averaging just 13.8 points on barely over 40 percent shooting over his last 11 games.

"For me today wasn't a good day shooting either from the field or the free-throw line," he said. "I'm disappointed in myself."

Seattle had its three-game winning streak come to an end with a 114-103 loss to Denver on Sunday. Rashard Lewis scored 28 points for the SuperSonics, but it didn't have as much impact as when he had 33 against the Nuggets in a 100-97 victory four days earlier.

"It was a game they needed, so you can't really match a team that's in desperation for a win because they're fighting to make the playoffs and hold onto their spot," Seattle guard Earl Watson said. "They came out and they beat us."

Seattle is seeking to win four straight on the road for the first time since March 1-15, 2005.

The Spurs are 19-3 since February 11. Hard to believe it's 19-3, especially when each and every little Spurs loss gets so harshly judged.

I don't know if any other team in the NBA is judged as hard as the Spurs. General rule it seems: If the Spurs lose to Indiana, it's because the Spurs aren't good anymore. If the Suns lose to Milwaukee, it's because they had an off night.

Does the "off night" excuse not work for the Spurs too? I think us Spurs fans got a little spoiled once our team started having routine victories again. In other words, its as if SA were to win 20 in a row, then loss the game after that, it means they suck. If not for struggling in January and early February, Spurs would be headed to a 60 win season. They actually still could by going 8-1 the rest of the way. We should settle for 57-59 wins without saying it was a disappointing season. They've gotten it together after the ASB as always.

If the Spurs lose tonight, I will quit this board. And no I won't go make another username if they do lose.

The 3 Spurs losses since ASB have been shitty, pathetic, half-assed "efforts" where the Spurs beat themselves. That's unacceptable.

The Mavs loss to the Warriors was to a Warriors team playing way over its head, before its home crowd, the best possible basketball that crappy team could produce. A painless loss. That happens to every great team. The Spurs happen to themselves.

I didn't realize Ginobili was in a mini-slump lately. From the way everyone talks (even non-Spurs fans), you'd think he's the greatest Sixth Man to ever play the game.

Not that Seattle has even the slightest chance of winning, but go Seattle! Help the Suns extend that lead for the 2nd seed.

The Mavs lost to the Warriors simply because when it's a game between those two, the Warriors are the better team. Dallas has lost to GS 5 out of the last 6 times they've played dating back to the beginning of 2005-2006 season. Same Mavs team.

You're right, it's more about what the Spurs didn't do, than about what Boston, Milwaukee, and Indiana did. If the Spurs' only 3 losses since Feb. 11 were to non-playoff East teams, they've got nothing to worry about.

It's acutally quite good when you think about it. If we are beating all the good teams, we will have to lose to a crappy team every once in a while. A 22 game win streak is nearly impossible.

Nope, you have to view the 2 games right before the ASB (especially Detroit), as being the starting point of the Spurs getting out of their slump from January and beginning of February. Therefore, it's a 19-3 stretch. Detroit twice, Houston, and Utah were all in there, so we can't say it was all junk teams. The general rule is: Spurs peak in March, and they did, just like they do every year. 13-2 in March.

Now, if the Spurs beat Phoenix on Thursday (I thought Utah was supposed to be the indicator of whether or not the Spurs are back and "for real"? They won.), then that's the statement game. But then again, they have Dallas coming up, who probably won't play their starters, so the Spurs to most fans won't prove anything until winning the whole thing in June.

Yea, but I think if Pop had handled the Butler situation a little differently from the start....he could be an effective starter by now. Instead he was forced to come here and told immediately that he won't be playing this season and the entire season would be a learning experience, mostly likely from the bench. Well...maybe Pop should have used Butler with limited minutes in the begining to he could learn from real in game experience and that would have motivated him to get in shape quicker and have a better attitude.

White had good form on his jumpshot, but it was a little flat. Still, I like how aggressive he was with the ball, and how he wasn't suprised when he actually scored...like he belonged.

Butler didn't call for the ball or establish position in the post often enough...not aggressive, too willing to defer to others. He only really shined when other Spurs (Vaughn, Bonner) set him up. Very good...he drove across the lane, avoided one defender, drew contact in the post and shielded the ball from block, and laid it off the glass on the other side of the rim.

Actually they just changed it. It's just like the reg season now. 15 slots, 12 active in any given game.i didn't know that. I was thinking there are actually 13 slots for active players in the playoffs. They changed the rules since when? :wakeup

FWIW, Jackie's two buckets were good as well. He got a feed from JV and waited patiently for Petro to commit before drawing the foul and laying it in strong....BTW, he made the FT and looked good doing it. His second bucket came after he missed a free throw line jumper, got the ball back after an offensive rebound (by Bon-Bon or Fab) and scooped it to avoid the block off the glass.

White looked better defensively tonight, and Butler looked great.

Butler looked unreal in how thin he is compared to October.

I like this rule, but I just want to know where you read it. The only thing I've seen is the 13th player rule. I want you to be right...just would like to see it first.

it's true, i saw it online. can't find where though.

Just sped-read thru the game blog tonite, dam, y'all one dysfunctional family :lol

yeah, alright, some of my contentions popped up, namely:

White MOVES without the ball, all that motion by him stirs up the rest of our team, making the opposition have to work harder

Anything is better than the flood of 3's that killed our O last game, the passing that the 3rd team executed just made more sense in terms of keeping scoring options open

someone said the Killer Bees were Barry, Bowen and Bonner
does that make Bonner, Beno and Butler the Bumble Bees? :nope (alright, enough of that)

and thinking about that lineup for the last minutes of the game, gonna post something I placed here a few weeks ago, someone here who posted about Bruce Bowen's reputation smasher performance...................

Butler didn't call for the ball or establish position in the post often enough...not aggressive, too willing to defer to others. He only really shined when other Spurs (Vaughn, Bonner) set him up. I'm not saying anything about this kid's long-term potential with the team, but he's got some work to do.

for a big that would play opposite of Duncan next year, I like that in a big.

Get the junk or the leftovers. Rebound and defend.

:wtf He was going right at two seven footers (Sene and Petro) without even flinching.

That was passive play?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2537369

The NBA is changing the way teams are seeded in the postseason, looking to avoid the controversy that surrounded last season's playoffs.

Starting in the upcoming season, the top four seeds -- the three division winners and the second-place team with the best record -- will be seeded according to their win-loss total, guaranteeing that the top two teams in each conference can't meet until the conference finals, the league announced Wednesday.

The NBA had given the top three seeds to division winners regardless of record, meaning a second-place team could not do better than the No. 4 seed, even if it had a better record than a division champion.

That rule came under fire last season when division rivals San Antonio and Dallas were forced to meet in the second round of the Western Conference playoffs, even though the second-place Mavericks had a far better record than division champions Phoenix or Denver.

Dallas knocked off the first-place Spurs in a thrilling matchup of 60-game winners, capturing Game 7 on the road in overtime.

The league's board of governors also voted to expand the postseason rosters to 15, instead of 13, with 12 players active for each game. That duplicates the rule used in the regular season.

The NBA champion Miami Heat were among those that criticized the policy that forced teams to carry fewer players in the playoffs than during the season.

Also, if a team has two 60-second timeouts left in the final two minutes of regulation or in overtime, one will be reduced to a 20-second timeout. Teams will now have two 60-second timeouts and one lasting 20 seconds in overtime, instead of three one-minute timeouts. Clubs will no longer be permitted to carry over a 20-second timeout from regulation into overtime.

"Our owners are intent on making the playoff seeding more fair for all teams going forward and in quickening the pace of the end of games," NBA executive vice president Stu Jackson said in a statement. "The board also thought it made sense to allow teams to utilize the same 15-man roster in the playoffs that they use during the regular season."

Good win for the Spurs tonight. With the way they've played since February 11 (20-3), Phoenix should be a win on Thursday too.

Why does NBA.com never get the Spurs' part in the standings right? Someone there doesn't like the Spurs. It's says they're 52-21 and have lost 2 in a row. Idiots.

I'm not saying anything about this kid's long-term potential with the team, but he's got some work to do.

Beno....bad, just bad

What game were you watching? Butler called for the ball on two or three possessions in a row, did an awesome job of sealing, was aggressive and looked fabulous.

Go re-watch the tape if you have it.

Didn't get to see this game because I was in a fraternity meeting, then went to have a few drinks with my bros. Did White and Butler get much PT, and how did they do?

Congrats to the Spurs on another dominant performance, looks like they didn't take this game lightly even considering the opponent.

You know what the difference was between the Sonics game and the Pacers game? Execution. Nothing to do with small ball, Pop, etc. It's on the players - when they come out and execute they defeat inferior teams.

So stop your bitching about the coaching after every fucking loss.

The Mavs lost to the Warriors simply because when it's a game between those two, the Warriors are the better team.

Hey smart guy, Dallas is 1-5 vs GS since the beginning of the 2005-2006 season.

That's wonderful, and not news to me Jeff. It doesn't mean squat though...

Mar 12, 2007 - gotta give the Warriors credit for being on fire in that game
Nov 6, 2006 - AJ & Jet ejected, Howard sprains ankle, Mavs miss a 3 to tie at the end.
Apr 12, 2006 - 12 pt loss...props to GS
Mar 23, 2006 - JRich hits a 40 footer at the buzzer to win 122-121
Jan 25, 2006 - Mavs won by 9
Dec 30, 2005 - Baron Davis game winner with 5 seconds to play, Mavs missed tying shot

3 of the 5 losses came down to the final shot, including the desperation 40 footer. You make it sound like GS has dominated the Mavs for the past 2 seasons. They've just gotten some late game breaks, although I give them credit for their late game shots (except the running, spinning, 40 footer :lol )

How about a SpursTalk poll on who is the better team this season. Mavs or Warriors? :dizzy

or who would win a 7 game series this season. Mavs or Warriors? :dizzy
