I will have a video of the uniforms (they showed them on the Living Show) in about an hour.
SAN ANTONIO SPURS CELEBRATE FIESTA AT THE AT&T CENTER
Team to Wear Special Latin-Themed Uniform for Game
Against Portland Trail Blazers Monday Night
SAN ANTONIO, April 4, 2007 - It's Fiesta time in San Antonio - so what better way to enjoy the fun than to have a Fiesta with the Spurs Night on Monday, April 9, 2007, when the Spurs take on the Portland Trail Blazers at the AT&T Center at 7:00 pm.
As part of the night, the first 5,000 fans that enter the AT&T Center with a game ticket will receive a "Fiesta with the Spurs" maraca courtesy of Capital Group.
The Fiesta with the Spurs Night is a part of recognizing the support of the NBA and its players in Latin American Countries, plus the influx of Latin American players in the NBA. To honor that support, the San Antonio Spurs are participating in the NBA Noche Latina commemorative uniform program. The Spurs join the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns, all teams with a significant Hispanic fan base, as participants in this new NBA initiative.
The Spurs NBA Noche Latina uniform is a white Spurs uniform that features the following special elements:
- Special uniform piping element consisting of the flags of the 20 Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America and Brazil (Portuguese)
- A special NBA Noche Latina logo
- The traditional NBA logo in the Noche Latina colorway
- A special NBA Noche Latina supplemental jocktag

Apparently the Spurs aren't the only team to sport Noche Latina uniforms. The Heat are doing this, too, but with their black uniforms:

The Spurs warm-ups, logo and arena were colorful during the Red McCombs' ownership period but the uniforms were still Black, White, and Silver. It sounds like the actual unis will have colors on the logos and tags.

I thought those cheezy "fast breaking fiesta" colors never actually made it onto the unis (thank God!), just the warm-ups and the court design, but my memory could be off.

No, Weiss was coach of the Spurs just before Larry Brown came in. The Fiesta colors were brought in to start Larry's 2nd year at the start of David and Sean's careers.

Elson can't seem to stay out of foul trouble and Oberto can't jump, so I guess Bonner. Though there will be games they will need Elson.

Well, if it wasn't a big deal, I wouldn't think they'd make a press release out of it. It's a little like calling a press conference to announce that nothing's going on.

Well it's a press release because it's a thing they are doing around the league to show the support of the Latin players emerging in the NBA and marketing to those countries. It doesn't matter how much the uniforms have changed, that isn't the point.
The NBA releases tons of press releases for every little thing they do. That's how publicity works.

Off the top of my head.......

Mexico = 1 NBA Player (Najera)
Puerto Rico = 2 NBA Players (Arroyo, Ariza)
Dominican Republic = 1 Retired NBA Player (Lopez)

He plays like does.

:lol Why shouldn't it count? He was born in South Africa and moved to Canada when he was 2 and lived there until he went off to college. He's definitely an international player.
And he was a soccer player. Definitely a foreigner.

124 Dominicans in MLB
5 Dominicans in the NBA
1 Dominican in the NFL
130 professional athletes.
9,000,000 total population minus 4,500,000 females minus 2,000,000 males under age 18 minus 2,000,000 males over age 40 = 500,000 males between 18 and 40
One out of every 3,800 Dominican males between age 18 and 40 is playing professional sports in the US.
:toast
Compare that to:
One out of every 75,000,000 Chinese
One out of every 3,000,000 Brazilians
One out of every 1,200,000 French
One out of every 830,000 Mexicans
One out of every 750,000 Argentines
One out of every 500,000 Australians
One out of every 175,000 Serbian
One out of every 95,000 Lithuanians
One out of every 75,000 Venezuelans
One out of every 50,000 Slovenians
One out of every 33,500 Americans

What's the big deal? They're like 0.5% different from the regular unis.Exactly...WTF is the point of wearing those things?
If you're going to honor something by adding a little patch, WTF...I don't know, it just seems like a retarded idea.
By the title, I expected some mariachi-looking uniforms.

I think that 1/9th fraction is pretty low. I would guess it's more like the neighborhood of 25-40% of all males in that age range.

I think it's about 17-18% in the U.S. (In 2000, ~23.5 million males were between 18-40 out of ~138M total males).

DR is 33-38% < 14 years old.
So not exactly sure of number of 18 to 40 males. Most likely 500K to 1M, although I never claimed we do math on that island.

It was a near miss. The black side panels with silver trim very, very nearly were going to be vertical stripes of turquoise, fuchsia, and orange instead.
Very true. The Express-News had a layout of all the possible uniforms....it was scary.

And coming to an NBA Lottery team near you:
Al Horford
Big news up here. He played at Grand Ledge High School in this area and his dad still lives here. In fact, according to the sportscasters up here...his full name is "ex-Grand Ledge star Al Horford" :)

I agree, this stat would be more relevant if the U.S. had the best soccer league in the world that all the best players globally wanted to play in. A lot of countries have leagues with 1st, 2nd and 3rd divisions so those are like 60 team leagues in effect. Plus, there are all the hockey players from the Eastern European countries to consider.

Looks to me like they are using teams from former Spanish colonies...
Cali, Texas, Arizona and Florida...
Other areas of the US first colonized by Spain don't have NBA teams...I think. Maybe Utah...maybe Colorado.
Dunno why they qualify Brazil when saying Latin America...Portuguese is as much a Latin derived Language as Spanish, and I've seen Brazil consistently included as part of Latin America in many groupings.
In fact, Brazil is probably the reason they call it Latin America and not Hispania America in the first place.

They should have done that for the uniforms when they played in Europe-- meaning the flag trim. Maybe they will this fall for those teams that go this year.

English is the "official" language there, but the most popular language (even moreso than English) for everyday speaking is Belizean Creole. Only about 1/3 of the people there speak Spanish.

And why shouldn't people be proud of the strides the NBA has taken in bringing foreign atheletes into the NBA? Being a Mavs fan, if they wanted to honor European players and put a German-themed uni on, I bet you wouldn't have an issue.

So much that Rick Perry is considering giving Dallas back to Mexico.
