Ex-Patriots WR Stingley dies at 55

CHICAGO -- Former New England Patriots receiver Darryl Stingley has died. He was 55.

Stingley was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital Thursday morning after he was found unresponsive in his home, according to Tony Brucci, an investigator with the Cook County medical examiner's office.

An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.

Stingley played football until Aug. 12, 1978, when the then 26-year-old receiver went up for a pass during a preseason game and was hit hard from behind by Oakland Raiders safety Jack Tatum. The hit left Stingley paralyzed.

Stingley was born and raised in Chicago. He attended Purdue on a football scholarship.

In 1973, he was a first-round draft pick of the Patriots, who are now owned by Robert Kraft.

"On behalf of the Kraft family and the entire Patriots organization, we're deeply saddened by news of Darryl Stingley's death, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Stingley family at this time," team spokesman Stacey James said.

Damn.

I remember the hit and it was vicious yes, but it was not a cheap shot. That's they way he played the game, especially if you had to come across the middle of the field as Stingley did on that play. The shot he laid on Sammy White in Super Bowl XI was harder.

tatum will aways be an asshole for that.

I don't think he ever apologized to Stingley for that hit.

Tatum's got his own problems now. Ironically, he recently had his left leg below the knee amputated due to complications from diabetes.

the hit

or

from what we're told, not trying to make much of an effort to get in touch with the man and talk to him face to face?
