lol, ok i will play along for you. yes, dirks is.
i could see it when he flew over wo-manu in game seven. just about the time when dirk got his wrist grabbed. (im sure glad manu couldnt reach the ball, poor little guy) :toast
Manu was behind him, so he couldn't have "flown over"

Building around a center is always the smartest thing, and I think Yao is younger, and he's good a great set of moves. Give me Yao.

Not that it has anything to do with anything. But why must people like you mock my religious beliefs all the time. If mocking me makes you feel better, than you go right ahead. But what i choose to do because of my religious beliefs, you take hilarity in maybe its about time you looked at yourself.

Dirk is far more durable, Yao has had a problem with conditioning and modivation.
If starting a team I would take Dirk over any NBA player. The reason is his past. He has played against supirior teams in the World and Olympics. In those games he has been to only player with any real talent on his german squad. His leads his team to the top three almost every year, he even almost beat team USA (AI's long three saved the day for the Americans ... Dirk was in rare form, even by his standards)
When starting a team from scratch, I want a Star that can get it done almost single handedly ... There are other players out there that are close, but none has actually proven that they could do it by themselves like Dirk has in the Worlds and Olympics against "Loaded" teams (When compaired to his German team)

Howard will never be at the level Dirk is at right now though. He lacks the moves and shooting ability along with the intelligence to be a great player. He is a freakish athlete though.

Give me Dirk. They're both incredible but Dirk will give you many more healthy games than Yao. Plus Dirk can run the court and back without sucking wind.

Someone who quotes the Bible when his tagline is "I Like Boobs", and go out and attack others with name-calling in a sexual nature talking about judging? Man, this is rich.
To clarify, the Bible never ask people to go around, be a jerk, and get a free pass from Christians because of that phrase, it was directed at those who actively go out and judge their brothers and sisters as an excuse of not accepting them.
Perhaps you can also quote Matthew 5:16.
On the other hand, I do think that you are commendable in the act of celibacy. I could never understand why someone who has no basic control over their biological impulses is superior to that of those who has, if anything, it shows those who give in as having little self-restraint and control.
But anyways, at this point, I would still go with Yao if starting from scratch, it simply is harder to find a good big man to build around. Dirk is good, one of the best in the game, and my choice for the MVP this year, but it is so much easier to build around a dominant low-post big man, than a dominant wing big man.

You forget that on this forum Dwight Howard is (however improbably given the vast difference in their skillsets) the next David Robinson, who was the best center ever to play the game.
Yao isn't any more injury-prone than Nowitzki (no, broken bones and freak infections don't make a player 'soft'), but he has considerably less stamina, which is a factor.
Still, he's a terrific offensive player and a great defensive player, and while he doesn't have the greatest hands it would take a lot more than that for me to take a post-up scorer+defensive anchor over a 7-foot glorified 2-guard, however good he may be (and Dirk is very, very good).

Never did I say I was superior, I just don't think somebody should use a life choice as ammunition for insult.

This is a tougher question than it looks at first glance. Is this for right now, for the future, or both?
Dirk right now, just an offensive machine. He still needs a Mario Ellie or Robert Horry, but shouldn't be that hard to come by.
But Yao is quite possibly the best 5 in the NBA right now. His only problem are the before mentioned stamina and possibly injury problem (That knee thing may be just the beginning).
Yao plays more D, and is the better overall player. He is a center who plays on both sides of the floor (when he can get down there). Yao for a building project.
Short: Dirk
Long: Yao
Both: Tossup.

you're not seriously reducing Dwight Howard's considerable amount of game to a bunch of "and1 tour jumping/dunking" are you? if so, then you're the one that's not overly smart when it comes to basketball. Chris Bosh is so skinny that Dwight Howard could snap him in half down low.

Chris Bosh isn't that skinny. I don't get these people who think Bosh is a toothpick.
Dwight could snap anyone not named Shaq in half, not just Bosh.

Wait a second! According to the national media, Dirk has never come through in the clutch before. A regular season game in March against Phoenix is more indicative of the stones Dirk has (or doesn't have) than a Game 7 on the road against San Antonio.

I voted for Yao, so what? Im not a Mav hater, I just think that Yao will be much more of a game changer for years to come. You can do things to slow Dirk down, but if Yao is on, no one in the league can stop him. The guy is averaging 25, 10 and 2 blocks this year. He is 2 years younger than Dirk, and shoots 50 percent from the field, and 86% on his fts, a big that you cant foul. I would say that all the people on this poll that voted Dirk without even thinking about Yao are more homers than I.

I didn't say being younger wasn't a benefit. I was just illustrating how absurd it is to say "Who would you rather have, Player A or Player B?" Well, that depends. If I need to win a game tomorrow, age is not a factor. If I'm building a team, obviously it is.

Well if this thread had been Duncan or Yao, I would have said Yao because of the age difference as well, not only because of that, but it helps. Yao hasnt gotten as good as he will get yet, and because of that potential, I would take Yao. And nice little spell check you did there, pretty good how you owned me right there

What about games 3,4,5,6 of the NBA Finals last year? They were more indicative than any other game.
Dirk is still not good enough to be called clutch, but he definitely doesn't quite deserve the "choker" label either.

Im not saying that dirk is super clutch but, did you happen to watch game 5? in the last minute dirk hit a couple of tough ass shots and a pass to dampier, the 1st shot was to put up the mavs by one with 50 seconds left and then came the pass with like 30 seconds left to dampier for an open dunk, then the mavs were down again and he made a shot over haslem and shaq to give the mavs a one point lead with 10 seconds left.
