in their primes, who would you rather have as a backup PG?
ponky

speedy claxton...he bailed out tony parker in some of those finals games against the nets (yes i know tony parker was young)...what has jacque vaughn done? seriously, it's a serious question because i don't know much about him

Speedy Claxton had a prime? He was too injured to ever have a prime.
Vaughn was a horrible shooter throughout his career, so I don't think I'd want him "in his prime" (unless his prime is now).

haha well it is a flawed question considering we have yet to see what vaughn will do for us come playoff time, and speedy did well as a backup in 2003
but I was just curious on how you guys felt
and ponky - vaughn is a solid defender for us, and has gotten increased playing time throughout the season, but playoffs is matters, and I guess we'll have to wait and see what he does

Vaughn is NOW in his prime and would start for half the other teams. Speedy was a great back up when healthy.

Speedy was HUGE in the 03 postseason. It's hard to forget how well he stepped up in big games. Let's hope Vaughn will give us reason in this year's playoffs to make this a serious discussion.
And that Parker won't put Vaughn in the position that Speedy was put in, which of course I think is highly unlikely at this point in Tony's career.

"Speedy was HUGE in the 03 postseason"
He helped put the icing on the cake in the playoffs, but he couldn't have made the cake that Tony did during the season.
I'd say Vaughn has done a decent job backing up Tony this year. His decision making has been pretty good and he's made some good hustle plays in recent games. His stats are about even with Beno, although Beno has about twice as many points and more TOs that Jacque. But if he can keep up the hustle plays in the playoffs, I feel pretty good about him backing up Tony. He only has 32 TOs on the season, pretty good for a backup.

speedy for sure.

They both serve the purposes. Vaughn is a tough little defender custom made to put some hurt on Dallas covering Terry in the playoffs. No more Van Exel for the Mavs to feast off of for a few minutes, thank God.

he played well in one game.
One game = bailing out? amazing.
Speedy was HUGE in the 03 postseason. It's hard to forget how well he stepped up in big games
because he played well in game 6 of the finals, and, thats it.

Did either of these guys have a prime?
If I must choose, my vote goes to Speedy. It would have been cool if Speedy's last name was Gonzales.

Speedy had a nice few games with the Spurs (and fortunately one of them was in the playoffs). However he only averaged 5 points and under 2 assists in the 2003 postseason, which was similar to his regular season numbers that year. He was an okay backup. He never even hit a 3 in a Spurs uniform.
What's sad about Speedy and his injured plagued career is how far his numbers have spiraled downward. He gets 25 mpg in Atlanta and shoots only 32.7% from the floor. Yikes.
JV has done his job better than I expected he would here. He hustles, plays D and is a leader. He's never going to be a shooter or a big scorer, but his jumpshot has looked better lately. As long as he can hold his own for about 10 minutes a game in the postseason, Spurs should be alright.

All we really need from our backup PG is good ball control and serviceable defense.
If the team is really in a crunch, we could have Manu and Barry in there at the same time and both are capable of running the point. That's just my opinion.

JV's contributions seem to be going far beyond his actual play. The guy seems to be taking a leadership role from the backup PG position and I think his emergence is what has really helped guys like Elson fit into the rotation. I think Pop even compared him to AJ in this aspect.

Yep, nice to have a leader when the second string is on the floor, instead of five guys looking at each other thinking "I wonder who is going to take the next shot."

I always was envy that Utah had Vaughn.
Frickin hustler and guy who do care about the game
I remember when Claxton took over the PG position in the last game of the 2003 Finals he was amazing hitting those jumpers of the screen and driving to the basket.
Injure free - I would take

Jason Kidd, Magic Johnson or that white guy from Utah who was pretty good.
Do I have to choose between Vaughn and Speedy? Well, Speedy had three good games that made his reputation. Vaughn hasn't had to make any crucial contributions yet so I guess Speedy....no, Vaughn...Speedy?....oh the hell with it. I don't care.

Exactly. Spurs offense/defense does not necessarily stagnates when he is on the floor. Beno sure is a good passer but not really a good floor general.
And of course... Vaughn provides energy and hustle and D.

Speedy was the shit but his performance in playoffs 03 is overrated..

vaughn blows though if you think about it, the better he plays the more pop leaves him out there for 15 straight minutes, WHILE RUNNING THE TEAM AROUND HIM, hes like our main option when he comes in. Vaughn in a lineup with oberto, bowen and horry is pitiful

I don't watch many games, but what i've heard ("leader", "good decisions", "can't shoot") of Jacque makes him sound like the second coming of Avery.

Claxton had a one quarter prime. Luckily that was the fourth quarter of Game 6 of the 2003 NBA Finals. I would take that Speedy over Vaughn.
Modern day, I'd take Vaughn. Speedy is so broken down that he should be renamed Craig Claxton. He's a couple years younger than Vaughn, but he's pretty much done as an NBA player.
I'm still not 100% convinced that Pop is going to stick with Vaughn in the playoffs. Come playoff time, teams are going to double dog dare Vaughn to shoot the ball. If he misses too many, Pop will find other ways to cover the backup PG minutes.
Hopefully Vaughn plays well in the playoffs because he's a guy who won't command much salary. He's not flashy so another team won't jump at trying to get him. If Vaughn is the answer, he could be around for another three or four years.

The way he has shot lately, that could be a bad move.
