Sources say Oden, Conley and Dunbar's Cook will declare for the NBA draft.

By Mark Gokavi

COLUMBUS — The crowd chanted "One more year" Wednesday night for Greg Oden and fellow Ohio State basketball freshmen Mike Conley Jr. and Daequan Cook.

It's more likely those Buckeyes were "one and done" in college.

Sources say all three likely will make themselves eligible for the NBA draft. Albert Powell's opinion is a "90 to 95 percent" chance the trio will ultimately decide to enter the draft.

Cook said that he is leaning toward staying in school, but he says he doesn't have all the information he wants yet.

Powell was an assistant on that group's AAU team (coached by Mike Conley Sr.), a member of Dunbar's coaching staff and close friend to all three families.

"If it's one," Powell said. "It's all of them."

Ohio State held a celebration complete with the band, the mayor, cheerleaders, a highlight video and 4,000 fans at the Schottenstein Center. Ohio State (35-4) was the Big Ten regular-season and tourney champions and NCAA runner-up to Florida.

It also may have been a farewell for three freshmen and AAU teammates who have had NBA dreams since grade school. Players can withdraw from the draft until June 18.

The players' families — including Conley Sr., now an NBA agent — plan to meet Sunday in Indianapolis. Ohio State coach Thad Matta hopes to talk with the players next week, armed with NBA information.

"If guys go, I'm going to be happy for them," said Matta, later adding: "Money's one thing. Memories are another. A lot of people would rather have great memories."

If Conley does come out, which would be kind of a surprise to me, do you guys think he goes ahead of Acie Law as the top PG in this years draft?

Conley has a bigger upside than Law - quicker, better handles - overall a higher potential. Add to that he's 3 to 4 years younger and he's the 1st PG taken.

Conley has great court vision and dribbling skills. Both are quality PGs, but Conley is more of a pure, distributing point guard while Acie is more of the Nick Van Exel jumping off one foot from the 3pt line to win the game in the in the playoffs kind of PG.

And lets not forget Mike Conley Jr. came from Mike Conley Sr.'s seed

OSU trio learn more about NBA life

Oden, Conley and Cook families meet with an agent for a presentation on money, marketing and draft position.

Ohio State freshmen Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr. and Daequan Cook now know a lot more about the business of basketball. Whether they soon join that business hasn't yet been announced.

The trio's families met for about six hours Sunday in Indianapolis with Mike Conley Sr. ? now an NBA agent.

After a group presentation, they broke up into three rooms and learned about draft position, money, marketing and the NBA life.

"They have a lot more information ? they were taking notes, the parents were taking notes, and they asked plenty of questions," said Albert Powell, an assistant to Conley Sr. on the group's AAU team and a friend to all three families. "For all three of them it's different.

Final decision to leave for NBA may go down to wire

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

If Mike Conley Jr. and Daequan Cook decide to enter the NBA draft to buy themselves more time to assess their status, the mid-June withdrawal deadline could be near before they make their final decision: whether to stay in the draft or return to Ohio State for another season.

Conley's father, Mike Sr., said yesterday that the NBA pushed back to late May the date when teams can begin working out college underclassmen who have declared for the draft. Teams previously were allowed to start workouts earlier.

The workouts will give the two players "a more accurate picture" of their draft status than is available now, Conley Sr. said, which is why he said he did not address their status with them during a six-hour meeting Sunday in Indianapolis.

Conley, Cook and fellow freshman Greg Oden, the presumptive No. 1 pick in the draft, attended the meeting with their parents and other advisers. Conley Sr., recently certified as an NBA agent, presented the three and their families with the pros and cons of making the jump now.

"I don't want them to be overconfident or put a lot of stock in what Internet sites say or what teams may have said to me, because that changes," Conley Sr. said of his son, a projected high first-round pick, and Cook, who may or may not be drafted.

"The only thing they can do with the information they know now is use that to make a decision of, 'Should I enter my name in?' "

Oden "is a different story," Conley Sr. said. "He needs to decide if he's going to do it or not, and if he does it, he needs to do it all the way."

The 7-foot Oden, runner-up for the Wooden Award, is a lock to be the first or second player chosen overall and "doesn't have to work out for a lot of teams" if he decides to enter the draft, Conley Sr. said.

The deadline for entering the draft is April 29, but a player can withdraw his name by June 18 provided he has not signed with an agent. The draft is June 28.

The three players were expected to meet yesterday with Ohio State coach Thad Matta, but as of late yesterday afternoon, they had not, a team spokesman said. They could announce their plans before the end of the week, though not necessarily at the same time.

As far as Conley Jr. is concerned, "the sooner the better," his father said, "so he can focus on wherever he's going to be going. His life's not easy right now."

The First RealGM 2007 Mock Draft

1. Greg Oden, Ohio State, Center, Freshman:

With a low-post game that is far more developed than many were expecting, the team that wins the lottery will be receiving far more than Oden’s preternatural gift for shot blocking. I believe Oden’s basement for production arrives approximately where Dwight Howard’s ceiling hangs. While both are physical anomalies, Oden’s size and shape is perfectly suited for the center position, particularly on offense than Howard’s extremely broad shoulders.

6. Mike Conley, Jr., Ohio State, Point Guard, Freshman

I’m not quite convinced of Conley’s perimeter shot and there are always durability questions for a player as small and slight as he is, but his ability to penetrate and stay completely calm, regardless of the situation, cannot be taught.

No Daequan Cook! He needs to go back to tOSU!
