Since the Detroit Indiana fight has caused such an uproar I wanted to poll the group as to their personal opinions about retaliation.
You are in a bar watching a Spurs game and a fan of the opposing team throws a beer on you. Do you:
Call over a bouncer or other appropriate security to have the fan removed
Ignor the guy, and realize that he must just be stupid for rooting against the Spurs in the first place
Coldcock the guy out of principle
Start a barroom brawl and when arrested tell the police that it was self defense and you were caught up in the heat of the moment

I think a) would have the better results, but, in the heat of battle who knows what would go down!

You also have to take into account who you are. For me, I'm a girl and pretty short so I'd run straight to security. But if you're a tall, very muscular professional athlete wanting to retaliate on a guy who looks like he should be at a chess tournament rather than a basketball game, gee, let me think .....

An "eye for an eye" would imply that you throw a beer on the other fan. Hopefully, a light beer because that would be its best use.

B for me, though I'd probably give them a "what the hell did you do that for?" look. It'd take a lot more than that for me to get upset about it.

It just depends on if I feel like getting arrested and spending 4 or 5 hours in Jail for destruction of private property, PI, and disorderly conduct or not..and A & B....the most likely result from getting into a fight in a bar.
The drunker I am the more likely I would get into a fight over it.
It also depends on how big and mean looking the guy is.
And how many friends he has with him.
It would also depend on if the Spurs were losing or not.

The difference, of course, is that you are not a player. A player is not a opposing "fan", they are paid to play the game. That's why they are there. Fans that throw shit aren't tolerated. But what also isn't tolerated is a player ceasing to act in a professional manner and going into the seats and attacking fans. Apparently the fan Artest originally attacked did not throw the shit on Artest.
There are a myriad of reasons why players are told to stay on the court and let security handle unruly fans, namely that the players avoid hurting themselves, someone else, avoid potential civil and criminal charges, and generally keep their reputation and that of the league from getting worse.
Fans don't have a license to throw shit on players but they also don't have a license to be beat up by a pro athlete. In addition to the loss of pay that Artest, Jack, and JO are going to suffer from missing a quarter of this season or more they are also up for having several more of their millions transferred to someone else once all the lawsuits settle.

I'm about 6'4, 235. For someone as big as me, if I breathed on the chump, much less knocked his teeth out, I'd get sued. I'd call security to throw the guy out; it's what their paid to do. :)
